Sometimes given as Julien-Hippolyte Moulin or Hypolite Moulin, 1832–1884) was a 19th. century French sculptor. Moulin, a shopkeeper's son, entered the école des Beaux-Arts in 1855 but was unable to afford to continue the lessons and had to become a language teacher in Paris to support himself. He subsequently studied with Auguste-Louis-Marie Ottin and with Antoine-Louis Barye. His bronze statue A Lucky Find at Pompeii(Une Trouvaille à Pompei) 1863) depicts a nude boy with a spade dancing for joy with one leg raised. Because he has unearthed a Roman statuette. His nude pose reflects that of the statuette itself, possibly indicating that the statue depicts the excavator imagining himself in the original statuette's pose. The statue won a medal at the Paris Salon of 1864 and became his most famous work. The life-size original was bought by the French Government for 7,000 francs and exhibited at the Exposition Universelle in 1867. It now stands on a tall pedestal in the Musée d'Orsay alongside Alexandre Falguière's Winner of the Cockfight on an adjacent pedestal- another bronze nude dancing boy poised on one leg that had also been exhibited at the 1864 Salon. Moulin won further Salon medals in 1867 and 1869, and another at the Exposition Universelle, 1878. The back of the clock has an adjusting mechanism, to help adjust the clock to run accurately. The left side is marked with an R for the French word for delay(retard) and the right is marked with an A for the French word for faster(avance) We have tested it, and it runs accurately for over 7 days on 1 full wind. You may need to re-adjust it to find the accurate setting. The key is included, and it is a size 4. Offering a Bronze Medal from France. It seems to have been issued by the Ville D'Orchies. A town in Northern France, in honor of a Charles Levy, on June 7, 1957. The obverse shows what I presume to be the town's Crest. With a Lion at the center, surrounded by a chain, with a crown at the top and medals with ribbons hanging below. Antique 1800's 19thC Spelter Brass Bronze Japy Freres Era French Figural Clock

This is a French clock that has come from the same estate of a collector that we have been selling for the last 6 weeks or so. Check our other listings for more items from this same estate and keep watching as we will list more items from this estate in the coming weeks. This clock is fairly complete from what I can tell however I am no expert so have provided many pictures so you experts can see exactly what you're getting. This French clock is made from several different types of metal. The back is tin. The fancy Roccoco base is brass or bronze as well as the figure with the part that the figure ... morerests on being spelter. The entire clock has been painted with gold paint, not original but done long ago. The brass or bronze sculpture depicts a cherub with a horn in it's left hand. This hand has been broken off and then glued back on, see pictures. His right hand used to be holding something as well but as usual it is missing. This piece has a porcelain dial that does have a couple of hairlines as shown. Besides the previously mentioned defects, the flaws are as follows: The tin back has a bow in it, there is a hand missing, the clock does not run, and the inset panels in the front of the base used to be marble or alabaster but have long ago been replaced by tin. All in all this is a great quality clock that would be well worthy of restoration. It is rather large measuring 15 7/8" wide X 5" X 16" tall. AN EXOTIC PIECE OF EGYPTIAN REVIVAL FROM THE PEOPLE WHO INVENTED ART DECO AN EXOTIC BRONZE INCENSE BURNER FIGURINE FROM FRANCE- AN ART DECO EGYPTIAN REVIVAL PERIOD PIECE Date: Early 20th Century(1920s/30s) Regular visitors to our Ebay shop will know that we normally provide as much information and background as possible about the collectables we list but this one remains a bit of a mystery and this is part of its charm. We believe it is 1920s/30s Art Deco and the clothing and jewellery worn by this bare breasted young lady strongly suggests the Egyptian Revival period(i.e.after the discovery of Tutankamen's tomb in 1922) We also note that it was made in France(because it says so) but we have not been able to shed any light on the embossed number that follows"3.R" We are not absolutely sure that it is bronze. We know that it ... morehas some gilt decoration and its weight. Colour and cold feel suggests it is the real thing, and certainly not spelter, but we cannot be certain and we sell it on that basis. It has been suggested it is a ring or trinket dish. But its similarity to incense burners that were produced in the Far East and imported by the famous Vantine's store in New York in the early 1900s is clear to see. It measures 14 inches or 36 cm high. The base measures 5 by 10 3/4 inches or 12 by 27 cm. The bronze is mounted on a marble base and held to that base by studs and nuts. The bronze shows the athlete competing in the ancient Greek Olympic sport called the Pankraton. The Pankatron was what we would call today a martial art sport and was an all out affair without any real rules. It is the forerunner of both wrestling and todays boxing. The nude athlete is in a dark. Very rich, greenish bronze patina or color. He stands on a variegated black marble base. The condition of both the bronze and the marble is excellent and all original. The heads of the paw feet look like F oo D ogs. A large Wolfhound rest s on the lid. The base of the lid is covered with a red velvet that has faded from age and use. The interior of the base has two round holes and one square center hole. The body of the base has a multi-petal design/ shape. I do not see a mark on the inkwell. It is a very heavy piece. But there is a piece of printed paper underneath the velvet in the lid that has German printed words. So, that is why I listed it as French/German. The miniature portrait is painted on a thin slice of ox bone. This beautiful box is in good condition, but has a few dents on the bottom.The green soft velvet interior has some stains and, should most likely be replaced. The box has relief of rose garland on the sides and a rope twist around the top. The lid opens and closes just fine, but the top velvet circle needs to be glued in place it keeps falling out when I open the lid. The box measures 2 7/8" in diameter and is 1 3/8" tall.
