This is a cold painted bronze chicken figure. It is about 3 ¼” tall. Heavy for its size and weighs a little over ½ pound(8.6 ounces on my postal scale) Marked on the tail feathers with GESCHUTZT and a 3 digit number that I can’t make out. There also is a mark on the side DEPOSE and on the rear a number that looks like 580? The piece is in used condition with some wear to the colors on the high spots. There are no breaks or repairs that I see. I was told that this was probably a Bergman Foundry piece from Vienna Austria around the early 1900’s? COLD PAINTED VIENNA SIGNED BERGMAN BRONZE MAN PRAYING GESCHUTZT 1800's This is an amazing find. And a rare one at that. The bronze depicts a figure of an Arab/Moorish man in the attitude of praying or crying out to the heavens. The detail is fantastic. You can almost see the emotion in his face as he is reaching up. Very cool! A little information about the maker: Franz Xaver Bergmann(1861–1936) was the owner of a Viennese foundry who produced numerous patinated and cold-painted bronze Oriental. Erotic and animal figures, the latter often humanized or whimsical, humorous objects d'art. Noted for his detailed and colorful work, and signing either a'B' in an urn-shaped cartouche or'Nam Greb' Bergman' in reverse. These marks were used to disguise his identity on erotic works. So overall this maker produced some very ... moreinteresting and sought after pieces. The man is stamped with the FRANZ Bergman foundry mark(B inside of double handled vase) on the back with"GESCHUTZT" stamped beneath it and the number that looks like"5802" above it. The man is standing on a prayer rug. His shoes still on. The rug detail is great. Some color has faded but you can still see a good amount of green, red and silver-like color. The detail is very fine. You can see all 10 fingers clearly. Details of his face and full beard. He is dressed in a brown-ish robe. With a lighter undergarment, and a multicolored sash(red, blue, silver) He has his head covered by a turban with stripes that covers a bright red cap. CONDITION The condition overall is very good for the age. There is a very tiny crack on the wrist and a small indent on the rug as pictured. Colors overall are good with typical fading for the age. But due to the high quality casting, most likely manufactured out of Vienna, Austria. After many hours of research. I've only been able to locate one other Drumming Rabbit Inkwell. That inkwell was sold in 2008 at auction, and did not feature the tree-umbrella as seen here. Both inkwells seem to be pretty rare, with or without this tree-umbrella feature. This is a very beautiful model! The object bears the golden"FBW" mark(Fritz Bermann Wien) The object is 60mm tall. About the production of these miniatures The material of the object is brass. Achieving such a high level of detail requires a very complex and time intensive production process: At the beginning moulds of wax were created. Including drains for air and melted brass. All that was covered with clay. The mould was dried and fired. At the same time the wax melted and created a hollow space which was later filled with molten bronze. After casting and cooling the ceramic mould was destroyed and the brass core removed. Here is an antique Vienna bronze sculpture of a partridge bird I am quite sure that is the type of bird that this is. At first I thought it was a pheasant. But a kind ebayer emailed me to advise me that he thought it was either a pheasant or a grouse. So I looked at pictures of both on the internet and to me it looks very much like a partridge. There is some original coloring on it. But not much. It is in excellent condition. And overall measures 3.55" high. I found no markings or signature on it. It has NO repairs. NO breaks, NO cracks.
