This is a well-worn pair of Rapha Grand Tour gloves in black leather size large. These are a few years old and have seen hundreds of miles. As such they are very well worn in and do have a couple of things that need pointing out: a perforation in the right index finger is particularly large(see pic 2) A hole has developed to the right of the right knuckle hole(see pic 3) and the weather has worn thin on the inside of the left middle finger. Here I will be selling a beautiful collection of original James Tassie glass gems. I will be parting with 67 glass gems over the next month. All have an intaglio negative cut into them and so this is seen as a cameo when viewed from the flat side. These were used as seals to press into wax. Some of these are of W Brown’s great gems. These are of exceptional quality and were sometimes mounted in a backless picture frames where light would gleam through from behind the gems revealing the lovely colors. Tassie was a perfectionist and casting in glass was not easy– the failure rate would depress him& he would destroy a lot of casts and only if a bubble did not interfere with the image did he approve it. They are used and have a few scratches and installation marks but are in perfect working order. And once wrapped you won't be able to see any marks. I'm not sure what the age is on this piece. But it certainly looks like something that grand tour tourists would have brought back in the 1800's. It is a replica of an ancient tile work, as pictured on the front cover of the book that accompanies the mosaic. The overall piece measures approx. 10 inches by 8 5/8 inches. There is a border(looks like slate to me) that is about 9/16 of an inch in width. The mosaic scene is 5 7/8 inches by 4 5/16 inches. On the back is a label that says: STUDIO DEL MOSAICO S. C. della REV. FABBRICA Di S. PIETRO IN VATICANO No. 3074 Tazza con palombe" The damage to the frame is obvious. I don't see any damage to the slate. There are 2 tiny pieces in the front of the font that appear different from the rest. There is one tiny gap just to the right and below this. I don't know if this is how ... moreit was made. Or not. Antique Greek Italian Grand Tour Colichemarde Blade Small Sword Dagger c1890 This is for an antique Greek Italian Grand Tour colichemarde blade small sword dagger. Circa 1890. Of rapier form, the cast hilt with figural pommel, and cross guard with figural quillion(1 quillion a/f) the scabbard is also highly ornate, cast with classical figural scenes. The blade The sword has a distinctive Colichemarde triangular-section tapering steel blade, which is chased at the forte with foliage decoration. This type of small sword was probably taken back as a souvenir by a gentleman on his Grand Tour of the classical cities of Europe. The sword measures 57.3 cm in length overal. The blade measures 38.1 cm in length. It weighs 945 grams. The condition is generally excellent, the metal has the patina of age. Please see images. It is unsigned. But has the number“16” impressed on the back. The frame measures a bit over 8” wide. It has been cherished. There are no chips. Nicks, hairlines, glaze pops, stains or crazing. The bust measures 8 ¼ inches or 21 cm high. And is 5 inches or 12.5 wide across her shoulders. The bronze features a bust of a woman mounted on a low footed base with a shaped pedestal. The woman wears robes with a necklace and a laurel wreath on her head. The bronze has a dark milk chocolate brown patina or color which is all original to the piece. A fine and rare antique 19th century bronze door knocker and striker in the form of a satyr or lion head with ears. Wonderful patina- the knocker is not hollow on the back but fully round- an indication of high quality production. Beautiful deep relief decoration throughout including snakes entwined around the knocker. Separate striker is present. Good overall condition- the screw that attaches the striker is a replacement- works well and does not show- otherwise all original. A beautiful piece. Please view our other auctions. Offered is a Victorian'Grand Tour' Brass Obelisk Thermometer in working condition- dating(I believe) from the latter half of the 19th Century.perhaps earlier. Set upon three feet that are adorned with figural birds and a Crowned Monarch. Standing 10 inches tall and spanning 4 1/2 inches between each of the 3 legs- condition is excellent with darkened brass patina. The thermometer is in good working order(accurate and without damage. The scale on the left graduates from-10 to 100 degrees Fahrenheit.the scale to the right of the thermometer designates"Blood Heat" as the highest temperature(about 98 degrees) Sum Heat" is next followed by"Tempe Rate" and"Freezing" I was unable to identify the marks below. I have had many collections over the years.below you see 1 from another collection.these are all WAX SEAL mouldings and some are very old being Medieval in date.some of these ... moreseals may never have been moulded before so the MUSEUMS& SCHOLARS amongst you may be interested in them. they are of course of interest to the modern day collector too as you will not be able to find such items now.some of these are very large being up to 8 inch dia which I have never even seen myself.the original seals they were taken from may have long since been destroyed in any number of natural disasters as well as the 2 world wars we have had. these MAY be the only surviving mouldings from these GREAT SEALS.original seals are made of wax and can be various colours are found on Royal Warrants. Patents, and any number of documents too. Rare, Grand Tour Figural Lamp - Cast Iron Birds, Frogs, Lions
Up for bid is a rare. Figural cast metal"Grand Tour" lamp. I assume it's brass despite its patina(as a magnet does NOT stick to it) but since metal is not my area of expertise, I do not guarantee this. For the purposes of accuracy in the description, I describe it as"cast metal" please bid based on what you may know. I know very little about this lamp other than what 2 antique dealers- more familiar with these kinds of items than I am- told me. I was told that this lamp dates from the mid to late 1800's and was considered a tourist item for those on the"Grand Tour" of Europe. Originally, the Grand Tour began in the mid 1660's continued well into the early 1900's after the advent of both the steamship and rail. The Grand Tour was originally for for young. Aristocrats in England who would take months ... moreor even years touring the most notable, culturally sophisticated cities of Europe(Paris, Rome, etc. in order to study art, culture, music, and other culturally relevant pursuits in order to prepare them to take their place in rightful society with knowledge and sophistication expected from those of their privilege. They were often accompanied by mentors or tutors with an expectation that they would keep journals of their learning and/or sketchbooks to practice drawing what they'd seen in their travels. In reading abou these tours, it sounds as if the journals and sketchbooks were often left empty as they learned took opportunities to learn other things- namely gambling, drinking, and sex. Eventually, the Grand Tours were expanded to more people of less than sophisticated means and expanded geographically as well- people outside Europe began taking these tours as accessibility to rail and steamship travel became more commonplace. I understand that It was common to pick up something"touristy" from these travels and these kinds of whimsical lamps were the kinds of things tourists purchased. Mountainsmith Grand Tour Backpack Black Excellent Condition
Mountainsmith backpack in excellent condition. Owner passed away and this pack is one of several items we found inside a trunk which explains why it is in such excellent condition. Zippers. Buckles, straps and drawstrings are in perfect working order. Minor scratches on waist belt buckle. Appears to have had very little use and then stored away.
