Additional Information: A Janus Reliquary Figure(Byeri Figures) from the Fang people(Ntumu Sub-group Northern Fang) Equatorial Guinea. This Janus guardian figure is not often noted among the Fang, although early reports mention male-female reliquary figures on shrines. This is a Very strong sculpture with a lot of presence! As sculpture. These Byeri figures stand out as a fine example of good carving in a later Fang style, and the sculptural detail is testament to the Fang artist who shaped them. Fang memorial sculpture has a long history of use and was in fact photographed as early as 1907(Tessmann 1913/1972, vol. II) However the cult of Byeri began to lose its prominence after 1910 due to colonial government pressure. During migrations which took place in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, the Fang people moved to their present area becoming part of a complex overlay of population of approximately 200,000 which stretches from southern Cameroon into Gabon and Equatorial Guinea. Living in small forest communities, the Fang focused upon tightly knit kinship and lineage systems. Stressing continuity and relationships, the kinship system was employed to emphasize the veneration of ancestors through the use of figurative sculptures. Mounted on beautiful wooden bases, with some sort of marble looking finish, most likely from late ... more1800's. The clock and topper is not included in the auction. It is hard to find a matching pair. Generally single pieces are easy to find, a ppx 17-1/2 inches tall from base to top. Very impressive and detailed castings. You cannot beat the beauty of french castings. The wooden bases have name plates"Denicheuse Par Bruchon" and"Passage Du Gue Par Bruchon" each of the statue is also signed by French sculptor, Emile Bruchon(1880-1910) Both the statues are in good condition. With some light green finish, which possibly is original, I dont see any major damage or issues, having said that I am not claiming that they are damage free, there might be issues beneath the finish, so please review pictures or ask for more. I am not expert on statues. However the girl's fingers looks like repaired, as one of the fingers is thinner then the other, and roughness on the others. Again, you be the judge, I am not claiming them to be damage free, there is a 1/2 inch stress crack on the girls shoulder, hard to capture, and there might be more, but I have'nt seen them. The finish for the most part is quite good on statues but there are areas with loss of finish, and dust, it seems that some one tried to do touch up on some spots. I was told by a fellow Ebayer that there might have been a bird in the girl's hand. Every thing described to the best of my knowledge. Please see pictures, they are a part of description, or ask for more info/pictures, this is a used item, and there is usual wear/nicks with age, dont assume it to be perfect, I am selling it as is, parts, no gaurantees, The clock& topper shown in the picture are NOT included in the auction. This textile is an antique French Provencal quilt ~ this textile is two sided the red back side is a wonderful pairing of two fabrics manufactured later than the front ~ The neutral browns side of this textile are wonderfully early dating from c1800-1820~ most likely printed at the Jouy factory ~ this textile has a Fenetre composition in which one fabric is bordered by another. This is the most complicated piecework tradition to Provencal quilts. The autumnal tones on the front side of this quilt are simply stunning ~ The central square was printed using hand carved wooden blocks and is one piece of fabric, rather than being pieced. This side is bordered using a wonderful block printed over-dyed cotton. The central square may have been produced as a scarf and later used to create this amazing textile. The border of the central square is an extraordinary printed piece with wonderful vermicular design on the sides. These fabrics are called called Ramoneur and were woodblock printed. These fabrics can not be exposed to water without risk of extreme damage to the fabrics as the mordants that were used to print these textiles were corrosive with time ~ so this textile is not suitable for water washing ~ The opposite side I would date to c1850-1860.
