Description: A well-proportioned 19 th century gilt bronze Tibetan bodhisattva Guanyin. We are not sure of the origin. And although we have guessed at Southeast Asian we believe it is Tibetan style. Seated on an elaborately decorated pedestal in the lotus position with the right hand in a teaching gesture, and the left hand holding out either an elixir of some sort or possibly a lotus bud. Nice Tibetan style robes, finely decorated including necklaces, earrings and crown with the Infinite Light Buddha Amitabha perched on top Condition: Good condition. This is a very charming figure of the Lord Buddha. Cast in bronze and gilded in Thailand sometime in the 1700's. This asana. Or posture. Of the Buddha is often called the"Sleeping" or"Reclining" Buddha. But it actually represents his final moments on earth. It is one of my favorite asanas because it recalls his passing from this life in a very human and peaceful manner. At the age of 80. The Buddha sat down to rest and told his followers he was about to enter parinirvana. The condition which occurs whenever the physical body of a person who has accomplished complete awakening, or enlightenment, finally passes away. He ate his last meal and after that ... morebecame very ill. He asked his followers for any final questions, and when there were none, he offered them all his last directions. Early 1800's If you set your monitor at FULL SCREEN from TOOLS you will be better able to view the photos This is a venerable and very interesting image of the Lord Buddha. I believe it was cast in bronze and gilded in what we now call Indonesia sometime in the early 1800's. The previous owner believed he belonged to the 1700's. But I think a later date is more appropriate. The reasons I believe he comes from Indonesia are several: His coiffure is strictly conical with no ushnisha. Or top knot, as you see in most mainland Buddhas. I have seen this type of coiffure on other Indonesian Buddhas. This Buddha holds his right hand in an elegant variation of the Abhaya Mudra. The mudra. Or gesture, of reassurance. But he holds his hand close to the center of his chest, instead of simply ... moreextending his forearm directly out as you see in most mainland Buddhas with the Abhaya mudra. I have also seen this in other Buddhas from the Indonesian Archipelago and Java. The surface of this image is a bit rough. From what I have seen. It seems that the technology and craftsmanship of casting and chasing the final image were not as far advanced in Indonesia during this time as they were on the mainland. Be that as it may. I still find this Buddha a very affecting image of the enlightened one. Notwithstanding what I wrote above about the rough surface, I find the modeling of this Buddha's face to be extraordinarily sensitive and unlike mainland Buddhas in general. Our Buddha has a very inward feeling to his face. His eyebrows are not arched. He does not have a smile on his lips. And, although his eyes are open, they are downcast. All of these things give him an almost melancholy expression, which is really quite rare. He does have an urna. Or round shape, on his forehead, which symbolises a kind of third eye with which he is able to see past this universe of suffering, samsara. Into the world of enlightenment. This candelabra seems to be of french design. It was once an electric lamp that used twist-on. Double contact light bulb, but has been/was used as candle holder for some time. It has wax residues. Signed around the neck with calligraphy symbols(possibly a story) as shown in the photo. The fine Chinese Brush Pot was made of a Bronze patinated white metal I believe could be Nickel. The white metal does not hold a magnet. The metal was carved/pressed with dragons and other Chinese figures. The handles are hollow tube like handles. Profusely carved with four panels of mythological creatures and traditional stories. FINE, SILVER INLAID BRONZE CHINESE ANTIQUE INCENSE BURNER, FU DOG FINIAL
This finely cast piece measures 5 and 1/2 inches high to the top of the Fu Dog. As you can see from the pictures. There is a simple, clean design inlaid motif which I have pictured. What is striking about this piece is its clean lines and preciseness. The handles are area a sharp ninety degree angle. There are no mold seams or tooling anywhree on the incenser. I am not sure of the age, but it is at lease 19th century, and may possibly be older. This is coming from an estate from which I will be selling several other nice Asian antiques.
