G.MERCATOR, original antique hand coloured map c1630 Untitled map of Northern and Central Ireland by Gerard Mercator Published Amsterdam circa 1630 One of a pair of maps which Mercator produced to cover Ireland in two sheets. This. The North Sheet covers from the North coast of Donegal, down to just beyond Dublin. A later edition with the sea area left plain rather than the heavily patterned earlier version. Latin text verso. A crisp. Dark impression enhanced with original or early hand colouring. Some light toning overall and an isolated spot of browning can be seen on the original centre fold. Paint oxidisation has caused some cracking in one location(just left of Belfast) reinforced verso with archival tape and is barely visible from the face of the map. Gerard Mercator( 1512-1594) remains perhaps the most famous cartographer of them all. With the Mercator projection system that he created still in use today. He and his friend and business associate Abraham Ortelius were responsible for the first atlases ever published. Mercator himself established the concept of the modern atlas although it was Ortelius who was to make first publication. Mercator's own atlas was published in 3 parts running up to 1595, with a number of following editions. His son Rumold and grandson Michael continued Gerard's work after his death in 1594. A series of smaller county maps were published in 1701 and later. No extensive survey was carried out as such but the previous Saxton& Kip(or Hole) maps were updated by whatever information could be found. Here is a 1700's map of Ireland. The sight measurement is 12" x 11" The frame is 19 1/4" x 18 1/3" Double matted and professionally framed. Condition is hard to tell but we do not see any tears, looks to have some creases and a bit wavy, not flat. Please take the time to read the information that applies to you below.
