It is from Mitchell's School Atlas(Philadephia: Cowperthwait. 1855) The map has a copyright date of 1852 in small print in the bottom margin. A copy of the title page is included for authenticity. The map is not mounted nor matted, being sold as a single sheet as seen in the first pic. A very nice map in great shape. Size: The map image measures approximately 8 by 10 1/2 inches on a 9 by 11 1/2" page with a margin all around for matting as seen in the pic. Condition: It is in Very Good condition for its age with overall light tonal ageing. There are a couple of minor light stains in the margin as seen. Otherwise it is very clean with nice color that would frame up well, see the pics for more on condition. It is blank on the reverse with original hand coloring. Large Antique 1893 Bacon's Folio Map of IRELAND Central
A fine original 19th century antique map from G.W. Bacon. This listing: Ireland(Central) Provenance Commercial and Library Atlas of the World. Containing one hundred inset maps. Including all the latest discoveries, Extensive letterpress descriptions, Alphabetical index, Populations from the latest censuses, Gazetteer of 2,000 principal towns, Statistical diagrams and tables, etc. Edited by G.W. Bacon. F.R.G.S. Publisher London: G.W. Bacon& Co. Limited, 127 Strand. 1893. The maps for sale here are all at least 115 years old. I removed them from the damaged atlas myself. Size/ Format In millimeters(and inches) Sheet: 540 x 345(21 x 13½) Map: 480 X 300(18¾ x 11¾) These maps were all'tipped in' to the atlas. Meaning that they could be removed as a single intact sheet. There is a fold in the centre of each map. The ... moremaps are lithographs on heavy paper. The colors and still bright and fresh. The margins are generous. Condition The overall condition of the maps is very good/ excellent. There is the occasional spot in the margins of a few of the maps. And the occasional minor tear(always completely confined to the margins) has been professionally repaired. The photos included in the listings are of the actual maps you will receive, Remarks This atlas is relatively scarce. I was only able to find three rather pricey examples available online. A fourth is in the custody of the UK National Archives. Many of the maps that appeared in this atlas were originally published by Bacon in the 1860s as the highly sought after Weekly Dispatch series of maps. These maps are unusually rectangular with a length to width ratio of 1: 1.56. Which was, and is, unusual. The double maps are somewhat longer or'taller' than usual when vertical, and somewhat longer'wider' than usual when horizontal. This Commercial and Library Atlas offers a refreshing change from Bartholomew's widely adopted treatment of the world's geography with pleasant surprises like Tasmania occupying a full double page ma

A superb original copper-engraved. Early hand-coloured map of the Kingdom of Ireland Irlandiae Regnum by Gerard Mercator and Jodocus Hondius. Published in c.1610. The map has north oriented to the right and identifies the four provinces of Ulster, Munster, Leinster and Connacht as well as many counties, cities and towns including Dublin. Very detailed and beautifully engraved, the map is decorated with a banner style cartouche as well as a scale of miles and calligraphic labelling. The map measures approx 410mm x 330mm with very generous margins beyond and French text verso. The condition is excellent with a centrefold as issued and attractive early colouring.

Ireland and portions of France, Netherlands and Norway. The map shows cities, villages, mountains and rivers. The map is flanked with a large decorative title cartouche embellished with Neptune, two birds, two horses and three mairmaids. A drape stile chartouche including 5 scales of distances and adorned with two dogs is on the lower right quadrant. Date: 1702( dated) Dimension: Pa per size approx. cm 66.6 x 49,2 Condition: Very strong a nd dark impression ... moreon good paper. Paper with chains and wiremarks. Original colors to the outlines. Margin to the top missed. Wide lower margin. Wide right lateral margin. Wide left lateral margin. Right and left lower corners partially missed. Small foxing and browning. Small tears. Conditions are as you can see in the images. Cartographer: The De L'Isle family(fl. c. 1700- c. 1760) also written Delisle) were. In composite, a mapmaking tour de force who redefined early 18th century European cartography. Claude De L'Isle(1644-1720) the family patriarch, was Paris based a historian and geographer under Nicholas Sanson. De L'Isle and his sons were proponents of the school of"positive geography" and were definitive figures, defining the heights of the Golden Age of French Cartography. Of his twelve sons, four, Guillaume(1675- 1726) Simon Claude(1675- 1726) Joseph Nicholas(1688- 1768) and Louis(1720- 1745) made a significant contributions to cartography. Without a doubt Guillaume was the most remarkable member of the family. It is said that Guillaume's skill as a cartographer was so prodigious that he drew his first map at just nine years of age.
