1630 Fine Mercator Map of Leinster, Ieland
1630 Mercator Map- Comitatus Lageniae Gerard Mercator is one of the two great names of early mapmaking(Abraham Ortelius being the other) Geographer. Cartographer and mathematician, he was born in Rupelmonde in 1512 and died in Duisburg, Germany in 1594 just before the publication of his great atlas in 1595. He was the first person to use the term'atlas' to describe a book of world maps and invented the famous map projection still in use today. Such was the demand for his maps that a smaller version of his atlas. Atlas Minor' was published in 1607 by Jan Jansson with maps engraved by Jodocus Hondius. This in turn went through several editions with text in different languages before Jan Jansson the younger published a new edition in 1628 with maps by Pieter van den Keere and Abraham Goos. This nicely decorative map of the province ... moreof Leinster in Ireland comes from that new edition of'Atlas Minor' In this case a German text one of 1630. Van den Keere's name is shown as the engraver below the title cartouche in the top left. The map is aligned with north to the right and is extremely detailed. Cities such as Dublin, Drogheda, Wexford, Wicklow, Ghildare' and Ross stand out but even the smallest communities are included. For auction is this Rare 1630 Mercator& Hondius Map of Ireland Hiberniae II Tabula The map is taken from the Gerard Mercator(1512-1594) Henricus Hondius(1597-1651) Atalas published in Amsterdam probably 1630. It measures 15" by 20" and is double framed behind glass the reverse is displayed and is in Latin. It is in very good condition for its age and there is some slight browning mainly around the edges the colours are still very strong with little fading. Will post world wide. Can remove from the glass for posting.

The earliest maps of Ireland up to the year 1500 or so share the shortcomings of those of the rest of the British Isles especially as represented on world maps. It was not to be expected that lands literally on the very edge of the known world could be depicted with any accuracy; very often one feels that the cartographers or engravers placed the islands in the nearest available space consistent with their imagined position. Even in the first printed Ptolemaic map there is still much distortion in Ireland's shape and geographical position but. On the other hand, a quite surprising number of place names and other details are shown, as many, in fact, as in the rest of Britain put together.
