A Beautiful Classic Antique Map with Superb Color! Size: The map image measures approximately 10 1/2 by 13 inches on a 12 1/4 by 15 1/4" page with a margin all around as seen in the pic. Condition: It is in Good condition for its age. Basically as seen in the pics, with overall tonal aging and slight darkening around the edges. There are a couple of chips off the edge and a short edgetear, margins have been slightly cropped and some light handling around the margins, otherwise the map image is very clean in general with bright color and a nice antique quality that is rare to fine in this condition. It is printed on heavy paper, blank on the reverse with original handcolor as issued. The pics are of the actual map and very accurate of condition and color in general, however the actual map looks much better. Gerard Mercator( 1512-1594) remains perhaps the most famous cartographer of them all. With the Mercator projection system that he created still in use today. He and his friend and business associate Abraham Ortelius were responsible for the first atlases ever published. Mercator himself established the concept of the modern atlas although it was Ortelius who was to make first publication. Mercator's own atlas was published in 3 parts running up to 1595, with a number of following editions. His son Rumold and grandson Michael continued Gerard's work after his death in 1594. DESCRIPTION You are bidding on an exquisite Hand Coloured Reproduction Print of the John Speed original. The size and detail are faithfully reproduced from an original. This is a beautiful representation of'The Province of Ulster defcribed' from a copy of Speed's Prospect of the World from 1676. This is a lovely map of the northern province of Ulster. Present-day Northern Ireland. Speed's map reflects the 16th century political turmoil and military struggle between the English and Irish with several fortifications in County Tyrone, Armagh and Monaghan, built after the rebellion of 1593. The sturdy fortress of Enniskillen(Enis Kelling Fort) in County Fermanagh is inset and the map is embellished with a decorative title cartouche, a scale of miles with large calipers and fine lettering and ornamentation throughout. A sea monster ... moreguards the sea between Ireland and Scotland. This map was in use before the advent of motor cars. Railways and canals. John Speed was the most famous of all English map-makers. He published an atlas of the counties of Britain. Entitled"The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine" in 1611 and followed it with'Prospect of the most famous parts of the world' in 1627. His original maps are highly prized and fetch many hundreds of pounds when they come on the market.
