The brackets measure 9 1/2" tall x 7 1/2 across the top. They have an ornate curl on the end where the shelf would rest. I would say a 6" deep shelf would be placed in the area. Each side of the shelf brackets have 4 holes for mounting to the wall and 4 holes to mount the wood shelf you provide. These were commonly used at the turn of the century and seen in Grocery Stores. Here's a pair of wonderful antique cast iron arms- Pat date is Sep 13 1881 Arms measure approx 19" long x 5.5" wide One arm shows more roughness at the end. But is beautiful just the same. I am not sure what they were originally used for. But would make fantastic shelf, plant holders, light holders, or any number of repurpose uses. New owner would need to take the pair to a welder.
