It has a some socket seam deterioration that can be seen in photo. The only example of the square end butt cap I can find is to the Celts or the Roman Republic and with the smaller size of this I believe it to be Roman. An exmaple of this style of butt cap is illustrated in Bishop and Coulston's book on Roman Equipment. This has been cleaned with electrolysis and conserved with a thin layer of hot wax so no doubt about its metal stability. Even though it has some deterioration it is still a nice artifact to hold and admire. You can buy a rusty dirt covered artifact for less money but do not ... moreexpect to have an item of this quality when you clean it. It was found in Bavaria. Germany by my most trusted detectorist. This has an attachment pin hole. It also still retains some of its original plating which would have covered the entire butt cap when made. It does not show up real well in photos but covers over 50% of socket. As you look at the photos you can see the excellent quality of this artifact. This is one butt cap that could be used as a great weapon should the spearhead be broken off in combat.
