For the first time in modern publication, the styles of furniture available at the height of the 1920's, a pivotal period between Art Nouveau, Art Deco. The Depression year 1932 was the very worst year in the history of the furniture industry and most of the companies that failed did so in the four years between 1928 and 1932. Therefore. This catalog remains as the single source book for the products of American furniture companies of this era. Room settings of the period are shown as well as color charts of wood showing the standard finishes of the period. These will be a great help to people restoring furniture to its original color. Thousands of furniture forms are displayed with descriptive commentary facts. And a few original prices. In this edition. A price guide is included for estimating values in the current marketplace. American Antique Furniture + Antiques - Katherine Prentis Murphy Catalog
An Interesting Auction Catalog- The Katharine Prentis Murphy Collection from the New Hampshire Historical Society” The catalog to an auction held in Bolton by Robert W. Skinner Inc. on September 24th. 1983. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: An important auction of small 17th and early 18th century American furniture and accessories such as lighting. Pewter, metalware, and so on, sold by order of the New Hampshire Historical Society, to which they had been donated. Katherine Prentis Murphy was an important mid-generation collector. In"The Antiquers" Elizabeth Stillinger explains- Katherine Prentis Murphy(1884-1967) has been remembered in the world of American antiques not for innovation, but for style. It is impossible not to recognize a Murphy room. The elements are bold alternating black and white diamond checked ... morefloors; curtains, fabrics, and bed hangings in dramatic flame-stitch patterns, and furniture with high arching curves, deep carving, and crisply turned legs and stretchers. The theme set by these striking patterns and shapes is then embellished with copious sets of pewter measures, plates and mugs; numerous shining brass candlesticks, and ornamental hanging embroideries and prints. The whole effect is charming- and utterly unrelated to historical reality. Mrs. Murphy personally supervised and supplied furnishings for period rooms all over the East and as far afield as Texas, where her good friend Miss Ima Hogg donated her own house to the Houston Museum" DESCRIPTION: Hardcover. 8.5"x9.5" About 100 pages, 342 lots, many black& white illustrations, prices realized list. Drawings, Engravings, Furniture, Silver, Needlework& Incidental Objects Gathered to Illustrate the Achievements of American Artists and Craftsmen of the Period from 1720 to 1820” By Edwin J. Hipkiss. Published by the Harvard University Press in 1941. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: The first edition of this well illustrated and important catalog of this major collection of American furniture. Silver and accessories. This beautifully printed volume, set in Monotype Bembo and with full-tone collotype illustrations, established a high visual standard for furniture catalogs that was emulated by Joseph Downs in the 1950s and Morrison Hecksher in the 1980s. The catalog includes 125 examples of high-style furniture, the vast majority from Massachusetts ... moreand Rhode Island, although some superb Philadelphia objects are included. These objects are not included in Richard Randall's 1965 catalog. Karolik's musings, As I Reflect upon the Collection" provide a fascinating look at the mind of an idiosyncratic collector" Ames& Ward. Maxim Karolik(1893-1963) was a Russian opera singer. Immigrant, and art collector and benefactor who cut a swath through the Boston and American collecting scenes. The magnificent bequests of American furniture and paintings he and his wife made to Boston's Museum of Fine Arts earned them a place in the pantheon of Boston's patrons of the arts, and their rediscovery and championing of the works of Fitz Hugh Lane and Martin Johnson Heade, along with 19th century American fine and folk artists earned them a place in American collecting lore. The Karoliks deflected such honors, and in an open letter to the MFA's Director, Maxim Karolik declared"We are not'Patrons of Art' or'Public Benefactors. We refuse to accept these banal labels. We accept with pleasure only one label: Useful' Semowich 1352. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover. 9.25"x12" 366 pages

Book: Shaker Furniture & Tools & Textiles & Antiques - Whitney Museum Catalog
Shaker Design” By June Sprigg. Published in New York by the Whitney Museum of Art in association with the Corcoran Gallery of Art in 1986. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: The catalog of an important exhibition. Beautifully photographed. Furniture, baskets, boxes, tools, textiles, metalware and graphics are included. This is a good counterpoint to the Andrews books- Andrews worked in black& white and emphasized the architectural elements and spatial considerations, whereas Sprigg works in color and emphasizes the wonderful warmth and luminosity of the woods and stains. Were the sensuous colors imbued in their creations a product of the Shakers' otherwise unexpressed sensuality which could find no other outlet? A beautiful pictorial survey. 1954 STICKLEY CHERRY VALLEY FURNITURE A Living American Tradition illust CATALOG
Up for auction is this neat little book titled Stickley Cherry Valley Furniture. A Living American Tradition. The catalog of Stickley furniture was published by L. J. G. Stickley, Inc. Fayetteville, N.Y. in 1954. The following history of the Stickley Company comes from the company’s web site: Our story began with three words: Als Ik Kan—to the best of my ability. This old Flemish craftsman's phrase has been the guiding principle of Stickley. Gustav Stickley marked his product with the phrase to assure customers that Stickley furniture was of the finest quality. Every piece made with honor, integrity, and pride. The Stickley brothers burst into international prominence in the early 20th century with their Mission Oak designs. These were based on the notion that furniture should be"honest"a reaction against the fake joinery. Unnecessary ... moregaudiness, and shoddy workmanship of many of the pieces created in the early days of industrial furniture making. The Stickleys used solid construction. What-you-see-is-what-you-get joinery, and the highest quality woods. But even more, they showed a genius for design, creating hundreds of new forms that were at once beautiful to look upon, practical to use, exceedingly strong and long-lasting, and perfect for the new ways American families wanted to live. Stickley furniture was not for shutting up in formal parlors—it was to be used and loved by young and old. Great emphasis was placed on letting the gorgeous. Organic forms of quartersawn oak and other woods speak for themselves. Finishes were not thick gums, but clear dyes that allowed natural grain to sparkle. The same devotion to design. The best workmanship, and enduring value was applied to all Stickley designs. Leopold Stickley's colonial-inspired Cherry Valley Collection, introduced in the 1920s, honored the traditions of early American craftsmen, earning Leopold the title"Revered Dean of Cabinetmakers" in the process. Eventually the Stickley brothers passed away. And respect for hand craft ebbed
