I believe from air plane panels. The quality is military over-build which is very durable and tough. On the top of this trunk a hole punched stencil reads'Major Ben W. Hunsaker. M.A.T.S. Andrews A.F. Base, Wash. D.C. M.A.T.S. stands for Military Air Transport Service. Activated on 1 June 1948. M.A.T.S was a consolidation of the United States Navy Naval Air Transport Service(NATS) and the United States Air Force Air Transport Command(ATC) into a single, joint, unified command. It was inactivated and discontinued on 8 January 1966 when the Air Force and Navy set up separate strategic airlift commands. There is a red metal tag riveted to the front reading'KOWA Industry' and leather carry handles at both ends. Two latches and a locking mechanism secure the trunk. Matching KOWA key is included. As you can see in the photos the trunk is in good vintage condition with normal wear consistent with age and it’s use. All which adds to the character of the piece. There is some faint writing on the lid in faded marker. See photos. This trunk is 29.75” long x 17” wide x 13.5” high. Use as a coffee table, end table, or storage chest. This was finished with an epoxy resin many years ago, so the surface finish has some areas of cracking or has lost its gloss, but over all it is very nice and displays beautifully. Here is a bit of history about"Hatch Tables"Liberty hatch covers are the last true wooden hatch covers that were made specifically for the World War II Liberty ships, which were built to be used as workhorses during the war. Only 2710 ships were built to serve this purpose. The wooden hatch doors covered the cargo holds of war material that was shipped between Europe and the Far East. Interestingly enough, they were fighting cargo ships and were instrumental in transporting troops and supplying our troops during this time. The term"Batten Down the Hatches" signified the procedure that was used when a long sheet of thick waterproof canvas was stretched tightly across the open cargo hold. Wooden hatch covers were then placed tightly side by side across the top of the canvas and"batten" which is a long heavy pole made of wood or steel, was laid across the tops of the hatch covers. Each end of the"batten" was tightly secured to prevent it from releasing the hatch covers. This process is what prevented heavy seas from gaining entry into the cargo holds and sinking the ship. Years ago. It became popular to salvage these hatch covers that had become ruggedly unique from weathering seas. Many hatch doors were made into tables, as they were the perfect size to use without having to cut the hatch apart. Most of the hatch doors, including this one, were composed of 2 1/2" thick pine board and were topped with metal(usually zinc-based or galvanized steel) strappings in circular cut-outs on each end of the hatch door and riveted in place, and has a metal bar design that was for lifting the hatch from the deck. Vintage WWII Era GI’s Steamer Travel Trunk LOCAL PickUp In well-used condition. It was used by a GI in WWII to go to England. Since then it has been a storage item. Outside measurements 34” wide. 20” deep, 23 ½” high. It has an inner tray that can be used or not. See photo. It is cracked. The key is missing. The lock is there but has not been used(no key. One of the side handles is gone and the other is so deteriorated that I would not suggest using it. There are marks and scratches on the outside from use. Some surface marks inside too. Foot locker chest I am offering a vintage Military style footlocker from around WWII era. Has maker mark stamped on both leather handles. Some finish wear but little actual damage- on notable chip- strip on top but otherwise this is just in real nice shape inside and out. Door shuts properly and latches are good.
