Superb Cotswold School oak book trough rack arts crafts A. Peters Barnsley Heals
This is a superb Cotswold School oak and coromandel wood book trough. The quality of this piece is so easy to see. It is so lavish and over the top with exposed construction. The additional use of contrasting luxury woods is further evidence that this was a top quality piece when it was made. The through tenons and contrasting foxwedges act as a real decorative feature. As do the stylish canted edges. The quality of this piece can be further seen with the fine mitre joint in the coromandel edging. I imagine that this piece was made around 1950. It very much looks like the work produced by Alan Peters when he was working and training at the Barnsley workshop. I cannot definitely attribute it to him though. It measures 15.75" long, 12" wide and 7.5" tall. It would be a great place to store CD's. It is in very good condition. ... moreThe only fault being a slithernick to an edge as seen in the images.

Beautiful Mission Arts& Crafts Style reproduction triple bookcase. Quarter sawn white oak with a warm patina finish. Built in the old style of mortise and tenon construction. Hammered copper pulls with locking doors. These pulls are patterned from the original designs of Gustav and Leopold Stickley. This is the same cast copper hardware that has been re-issued by the Stickley company. These pulls duplicate the hand-hammered texture of the originals and are finished to a warm, glowing patina. 73" wide x 13" deep and 57" high. A superb original 1930s art deco nautical themed book trough/book rack measuring 14.5 inches long by 9.25 inches wide(foot width) and 8.25 inches high. The book trough has rounded ends made from oak with lovely inlaid cloudburst in satinwood with a galleon and crashing waves in relief in various woods and veneers. The shaped feet are in oak with a plain oak frieze to the front and raised oak edge to the back. There is a polished steel base with further polished steel stretcher to the rear. The trough has been used and does show some surface marks and scratches and some small additional pins for support have been added over time. Some marks and scratches to the steel in places. Some small white paint spots in places. Structurally sound and free from worm. Actual area for books is 12.5 inches long. This is a hard to find combination oak bookshelf/bullentin board. It is both functional and displayable in many different settings. It is solid oak and probably from the early c.1900s. It is in the original found condition which is very good. There are no known breaks. Repairs or other damage. The wear is conistent and appropriate for the use and age. The bullentin board is of a cork material and is in great useable condition. The two book shelves are very functional for their different uses. The approx. measurements are H 60" x W 48" x D 21 3/4" The bullentin board is approx 42" L x 18 3/4" H. The back is solid and can actually be used away from the wall as it is in a finished condition. Comes with base and top, it is all original, at some point in it's history someone put three additional glass shelves in it. It stands 64-3/4 inches tall, it is 34 inches wide and is 11-1/2 inches deep. These are outside measurements. The bottom cabinet is 16 inches tall and the other three are 13 inches tall. There are a few minor scratches here and there that would cover up nicely with a little stain. No damage and in working useable condition. A footed Mission Oak/Arts and Crafts Movement table/desk top book shelf. This has not been refinished. Also as a plus. There are original colorful cigar box tops in the bottom on the drawers. Original wooden knobs and feet. It stands 9 1/2" tall, 24" wide and the shelf is 7" wide. This item has scratches. Some wood loss. You will see that the letter holder on the left side is gone. ANTIQUE OAK WOOD BOOK SHELF BOOK END SECRET COMPARTMENT HOLLOW FOR REPAIRS
Up for auction is an intriguing antique find from the early 1900s: used as a book end in an early 20th century farmhouse built-in bookcase. This 10 1/2" tall red oak piece was found to be hollow, and have two compartments where at least one had a drawer at one time(see the top compartment groove in the photo) The drawer(s) are gone, but this is still a splendid way to hide things in plain sight! The top and bottom appear to have been dressed with a deep burnt gold cloth or towel-probably intended to protect the bookcase wood shelves. The panels are straight-sawn. And I believe the wood is red oak(my second guess is walnut) There are two decorative carved wood bead strips on either end, and there is an identical raised floral and leaf pattern on either side. These raised patterns are cracked with age, and there are two pieces missing ... morefrom one side pattern(see photo) Yet the elegance and warmth of this gorgeous piece are strong. Dimensions are 10.5" high. 7.5" long on the decal sides, and 4" wide from braid to braid. Because red oak is so soft and was used extensively in interior furniture making during this historical period, there are dings and grooves and chips missing. Even so, it's a beautiful piece. As I believe they had a brand called Library Bureau. Its hardware& moldings look similar to some of the Globe styles. In any case. It's a nice bookcase in good shape, with very clean lines, nice golden-oak color and appears to be constructed of mainly quarter-sawn oak with little if any veneer on the main exposed parts(excepting the back of course, and possibly the bottoms inside which look like a clear maple) The finish appears intact, with its age-related character. We've given this a cleaning, you may want to go further with perhaps some steel wool, decades of office-life generally leave these old barristers with their typical use-related'Character' ... moreplease see the photos) which to my eye is all part of the antique. We used this piece for holding antiquarian natural history books and art-books. For which it works excellently. But old Barrister Bookcases are great for displaying many sorts of things, keeping them dust-free& safe. Everything seems to work properly, glass fronts all slide up& back properly, brass knobs are all there etc. This Barrister is a nice sort of mission design in its plain square lines. With slightly rounded moldings which add a touch of'friendliness' to its design. As a modular piece. It's designed to be transported, and can be set up in various heights with either one, two or three of its sections. A very useful, effective& handy Barrister Bookcase. Approximate outside dimensions overall with all sections are about 57" high. 34-1/8" wide& 13-3/4" deep Interior(usable) shelf dimensions are about 13-1/2" high. 32" wide& 12" deep.
