The ... morelectern rack is missing the single piece of wood of bottom molding. The lectern opens and closes as desired. It has a gadroon edge. It is finished in a dark walnut stain. I think the wood could be walnut the more I look at it in this dark finish. The overall size is 21 inches square and 35 inches high overall. Each section is 10 inches wide, 7 inches deep, 11 inches high and 12 inches high on the bottom shelf. It is missing a few of the brass tacks, but overall it is complete. ANTIQUE OAK WOOD BOOK SHELF BOOK END SECRET COMPARTMENT HOLLOW FOR REPAIRS
Up for auction is an intriguing antique find from the early 1900s: used as a book end in an early 20th century farmhouse built-in bookcase. This 10 1/2" tall red oak piece was found to be hollow, and have two compartments where at least one had a drawer at one time(see the top compartment groove in the photo) The drawer(s) are gone, but this is still a splendid way to hide things in plain sight! The top and bottom appear to have been dressed with a deep burnt gold cloth or towel-probably intended to protect the bookcase wood shelves. The panels are straight-sawn. And I believe the wood is red oak(my second guess is walnut) There are two decorative carved wood bead strips on either end, and there is an identical raised floral and leaf pattern on either side. These raised patterns are cracked with age, and there are two pieces missing ... morefrom one side pattern(see photo) Yet the elegance and warmth of this gorgeous piece are strong. Dimensions are 10.5" high. 7.5" long on the decal sides, and 4" wide from braid to braid. Because red oak is so soft and was used extensively in interior furniture making during this historical period, there are dings and grooves and chips missing. Even so, it's a beautiful piece. As I believe they had a brand called Library Bureau. Its hardware& moldings look similar to some of the Globe styles. In any case. It's a nice bookcase in good shape, with very clean lines, nice golden-oak color and appears to be constructed of mainly quarter-sawn oak with little if any veneer on the main exposed parts(excepting the back of course, and possibly the bottoms inside which look like a clear maple) The finish appears intact, with its age-related character. We've given this a cleaning, you may want to go further with perhaps some steel wool, decades of office-life generally leave these old barristers with their typical use-related'Character' ... moreplease see the photos) which to my eye is all part of the antique. We used this piece for holding antiquarian natural history books and art-books. For which it works excellently. But old Barrister Bookcases are great for displaying many sorts of things, keeping them dust-free& safe. Everything seems to work properly, glass fronts all slide up& back properly, brass knobs are all there etc. This Barrister is a nice sort of mission design in its plain square lines. With slightly rounded moldings which add a touch of'friendliness' to its design. As a modular piece. It's designed to be transported, and can be set up in various heights with either one, two or three of its sections. A very useful, effective& handy Barrister Bookcase. Approximate outside dimensions overall with all sections are about 57" high. 34-1/8" wide& 13-3/4" deep Interior(usable) shelf dimensions are about 13-1/2" high. 32" wide& 12" deep. Antique Vintage Hand Made Solid Wood Book Case Shelf Shelving Curios Display
One of a Kind Hand Made Book/ Curios Shelf vintage charm at its best! naturally distressed has a generous amount of paint chipping. Marring, scratching etc. charm ++++! light cocoa brown paint over a creamy white paint. There is natural chipping and paint wear ~ a few minor gouges into the wood itself and paint"fading" and discoloration I have not touched the finish whatsoever other than cleaning I love the way it looks as is but you may want to sand down for an even more distressed look etc. It appears to only have those two paint colors over the bare wood It is put together with screws ~ the old"round bubble" type flat head screw(painted over) and the shelves themselves seem to be reclaimed wood(lumber scraps) from way back when ~ as each shelf is made up of 2 pieces"stapled" together with those old zig-zag ... moresawtooth type staples. They could possibly be glued also, I can't tell it is sturdy. Solid and fairly heavy ~ weighs approximately 20 pounds height to the very top of the back posts is almost 40 inches width is 19 inches depth is 11 inches fabulous and versatile! For sale is this estate sale item. I believe it is made of oak but I do not know for sure. Comes from a very old VA estate. Since it is an estate sale item- it is being sold as found. Needs a little TLC to make it grand again. It is a two door barister's bookcase. I do have the shelves- but forgot to put them in before photographing the bookcase. Has original glass- but one pane has a crack. Had signs of usages such as scuffs and scratches. In need of a good cleaning and oiling.
