Vintage Mahogany Dresser Mirror Potthast Bros. Federal Style Beautiful! LQQK!
This is a Vintage Mahogany Dresser Mirror. Also referred to as a Shaving Mirror or Shaving Stand, hand made by Potthast Brothers in the 1930's. As is typical Potthast, the details on this piece are exquisitely done. The mahogany wood grain is wonderfully rich and the turnings are a masterpiece. There are 3 drawers, and the dovetails on the drawers are cut by hand. The knobs are delicately turned. The mirror is held in place by solid brass thumb pieces carefully inlaid into the posts. The top of the cabinet section is inset and the sides are framed by short turned columns which add an interesting touch and create balance. It measures 24 inches wide by 25 1/4 inches tall to the top of the spindle posts by 9 inches deep. The mirror itself in it's frame is 20 inches by 16 inches. This piece would make a handsome and functional addition ... moresitting on top of a dresser. I took the photos outdoors so the lighting would show the condition of this piece and the beautiful wood grain. There are some small dings and scratches to the finish which. I believe add to the character of the piece. There is some color fading from sunlight on the surface behind the mirror. The Potthast Brothers Furniture Company was founded in 1892 by brothers Vincent. John, Theodore and William who came to Baltimore from Westphalia, Germany. A fifth brother remained in Germany and was also a furniture maker. The business and showroom was located in the prestigious building at 964 N Charles Street in Baltimore. We had the pleasure of spending time with Theodore and his wife who lived a shore distance from our home when we lived in Baltimore. In 1996. Potthast Brothers were included in a New York Times article reviewing the best furniture makers in America. The size of this piece affects the shipping cost. Circa 1950's with heavy solid iron frame and black and orangish ceramic tiles. 20" tall. Table top is 13 3/8" across, toes are 13 1/2" spread on the close sides. Tiles show some scratching and crazing and need some sort of cleaner. They are mounted on a solid iron frame with everything welded together. Sound and solid. This is a group from a set of Bassett Furniture in the Japanese style. There are 4 main items: 1 tall and 1 wide dresser. Plus 2 nightstands. The drawers have dovetails in all 4 corners. Handles/Hardware is brass(most likely) The tall one(48" x 40" x 20" features a double tall drawer about 11 inches high. One smaller drawer has a veneer chip outside(see closeup photo for that) 2 upper drawers in the wide dresser(32" x 60" x 20" have felt inside. Glass for the tops to protest them is included for 3 of them(not one nightstand) Nightstands are 22.5" x 23" x 16" I found no heavy scratches. All I rate good to very good. This vintage Aniline Skytex toiletry set is in very good condition and does not appear to be missing any pieces. The kit includes: a mirror. Comb, brush, two bottles, and soap holder. Most of the items are made of clear plastic except one of the bottles, which is made of glass. The set comes in a zippered brown leather case. I don't know the age of the item but my guess is that it dates to the 1960s. It was made in the U.S.A.

John and Sylvia Reid were at the forefront of British mid-century modern design. They were employed as design consultants by Stag. The mass-market furniture manufacturer, and went on to design some iconic modern pieces. The first project John and Sylvia Reid did for Stag was a bedroom suite called Cumberland. Or the `C` range, which was strikingly minimalist. They took functionalist principles to their logical conclusion and designed a range of furniture that was cheap to mass produce. But was of high quality. There was no pretense that this new furniture was handmade by craftsmen; it was built by machine and was meant to look like it. The units were stark. This is a great little sewing. Piano or vanity bench/chair. I think it is a Singer bench that came with my Mother's old sewing machine, but it is not marked. The top is covered in green avacado color vinyl, that is in very good condition,no tears or worn spots.The top comes off, and is a very convenient storage area for storing sewing accessories or sheet music. There are a few scratches in the wood as shown in the pictures. The bench is approximately 15' x 17' x 19' high.
