Feet mostly original w/ repairs and restorations, c. ... more1770-90 Item# 120010OEY02 This is a beautiful bachelor's chest with fine proportions. Crafted of solid cherry wood throughout all primary surfaces. The case is crafted entirely using dovetail joinery, noting the sides which lock to the top with a half-blind dovetail, covered with a fine molded rim; the bottom mirrors the top construction, and the drawer divider bars dovetail into the face of the chest. These are of only partial depth, not full dustboards, typical of New England designs as it lessened the overall weight of the chest. The facade is four graduated drawers with bold batwing brasses, each replaced using nearly the same holes, the brasses of the same age as the chest. The drawer construction shows exquisite attention to detail, note the channeling along the top of the drawer framing, a design characteristic of Massachusetts(though also seen throughout other New England states) The sides of the chests wear fine brass carrying handles, each of magnificent proportions with original hand forged screws locking them to the chest. They are likely added to the chest, though since the chest would not have had brasses on the sides of the chest to start with this is difficult to prove. The chest rests on scroll cut bracket feet, mostly original with mostly original blocking, the right side of the feet replaced in exact replication of the rest of the chest. This is a gorgeous piece. A visual delight and crafted with utmost attention to detail. The cherry boards have a wonderful jagged flamed grain with just a tinge of the soft red hue associated with a natural cherry. With a clean overall appeal and a deep patina glowing through the high polish finish, this is a piece that will enhance your living spaces. Almost certainly Hartford County, c. 1780-95 Item# 1402VPP15PF While the"oxbow" or reverse serpentine facade has strong roots in Massachusetts craftsmanship. Particularly in the South Eastern parts of the state, and notwithstanding the many documented examples of good similarity to the present example, this is almost without a doubt a work of Hartford County, Connecticut. The quality is above reproach in every way, utilizing generous solid planks of mahogany to form the top and sides with a single board. The top is handsomely molded and projects softly over all three sides, framing a graduated facade of four drawers with a robust undulating oxbow profile, flanked by deeply fluted corner columns with turned caps and feet, the whole resting over bold and original ogee bracket feet. The drawer construction is distinctive and highly economical; they are almost certainly formed from a thick square section of the mahogany trunk. Each sawed in succession and the remainder used to block out the curve of the topmost drawer. The result is precise and impressive. Each drawer side is finished with a raised bead along the outer edge, a feature almost synonymous with case furniture of this region of Connecticut. The bottom drawer exhibits a half-moon veneer patch, probably to"heal" a knot in the wood that the craftsman found distracting to the fine parallel lines of the mahogany facade. Neat dovetails lock the white pine secondary woods together, the bottom deeply chamfered and resting in rabbet grooves with nails tacking the back edge. The brasses on the drawer fronts are the second set of brasses to be on this piece, noting the single bore behind each brass that usually indicates a prior knob; however, knobs are not correct for this period. This is a beautiful and rare antique period American birdseye chest of drawers which is probably 1830s in age. The chest is unsigned but attributed to John Needles of Baltimore who was a famous cabinet maker back then. It measures 41 inches in height. The top is 49.5x19.5 inches. It is original finish and very clean. I believe the pulls are original as well. It is well made and a beautiful chest with the pronounced birds eye drawer fronts. It is well made which is how the old cabinet makers used to make them. Due to the size of this piece it either needs to be picked up here on Cape Cod or it must be shipped freight at the cost of the purchaser. We can recommend a couple of freight shippers on the east coast who do a very nice job for a reasonable price.
