It has a beautiful and ornate back plate and each of the glass hooks have small bronze flowers as screw heads. It will date from the early 20th century. The hook itself is in great vintage condition with just the loss of gilding giving it that fatigued French look that only time can truly achieve. However. There are a couple of chips to the glass sections. I have shown one of them in the photographs. They are still perfectly sound and will give good service– they have been price accordingly. Each is topped with a scallop shell cartouche which is repeated on the ornate front medallion. The scallop shell is the symbol of Saint-Jacques. Dating to medieval times and associated with pilgrimages through France to Spain. It is found on many French decorative pieces. Textiles. Metalware and furniture. They are made of cast bronze with an applied gilding. Known as ormolu. It is no longer being made in the traditional way. Which goes back many centuries. It has been replaced with electroplating.
