I am not positive of the boxes origin but I believe this is Folk Art. There ... moreare hand painted tulips on the edges and hand painted white flowers used in early American art. The measurements are 17 inches wide or long. 9 1/2 inches in height, and 7 1/2 inches deep. The chest/ Box weighs 11 pounds. It does have wear which is to be expected for it's age. The paint on the flowers have faded in some places, there are a few cracks on the wood, one is on the bottom(does not go all the way through, and one is on the inside of the lid. Wood shrinks with age and cracks are normal. There are a few places where wood has chipped off(one on the foot) the lock is missing and there is a heavy patina especially the places that would get the most use(by the handles. The front side has a darker patina(see 2nd picture) than the back side, it was probably sitting up against a wall and was covered on the top. The feet did have felt pads at one time. The rivets(or nails) are old type nails. It is made very well, it is very heavy and sturdy and it closes fine. It is a very beautiful piece whatever its origin is and the paint job is intricate and looks like it was very time consuming. Please email with any questions I will be glad to help. Up for auction is this top quality machinists/ jeweler's tool chest. I had been told by a bidder that it was not Gerstner. So I went on a hunt for the maker. Though it does not have a badge, all the details match with Alex Dunn. The drawer profiles, brass) hardware, and unique circle in a square mirror, all match with existing examples of Alex Dunn. Lower drawer bottoms are metal. Upper drawer bottoms are wood. This box comes with the original key! It locks the top, and the top engages throw bolts that lock the cover for the boxes. Great design, and the cases and felts are not in bad shape. Unfortunately, this case has what looks like(a gloppy) coat of polyurathane finish over the outside. Never the less, it is a beautiful box for tools, jewelry, whatever.and good luck ever seeing another one! Offered here is an old damaged wooden box that has three compartments inside that could have been used for tea or tobacco or who knows what! The lid is hinged and there are veneer pins in some places where repairs have been made over the years. Part of a sticker on the bottom from a former owner- Major Morris. Looks like inlay around the keyhole. The lock mechanism is in place but there is no key. On the sides are lions faces that look like at one time there would have been a ring in them. Here we have a small antique wooden hope chest or document box. the wood has a beautiful golden patina. the lid is chamfered and the sides are canted. there is a latch to receive a lock( see photo 4) there are handles on both sides of the box. the inside was painted red at some time. the paint is not as old as the box. the overall size is 15 inches long( 18 inches long with the handles) by 8 inches wide. it stands 6 inches tall. the piano hinge that secures the lid to the box. Refinished antique wooden steamer trunk circa late 1890’s. Early 1900’s with original hardware. This has a wonderful flat top surface, perfect use for a table or at the bottom of a bed. Plus it is nice and roomy, excellent for extra storage. The inside has been stripped of the original paper. Brass colored hardware and front lock, no key. Original handles in tact, which is rare as most broke off over time. The wood has been finished in a nice warm medium pine color with a not to shiny, not to dull, just right finish. The metal hardware has not been repainted, only cleaned. I like to leave the hardware in its found state. Rear hinges are in working order and original inside hardware holds lid up perfectly. In the box were many paper items relating to their personal banking. Working, political lives. There are also many deeds and receipts for properties owned by them or their family. There are photographs as well as postcards. A series of black and white photos are of the 1934 Portland Rose Festival. Some military items. Too many to mention. The correspondence dates from 1909 to 1939. The box is of a sturdy construction with bridle joints. On brass hinges. The brass locking mechanism is a Yale Chest Lock. Old logo. Two stamped brass handles on either side of the chest. There is no key. Inside there is a lift out divided drawer which reveals a large ... morestorage place below. The upper inside lid has a pull down wood shelf which exposes compartment for storage. The interior is very clean. The outside shows layers of old varnish that has been exposed to many different climates from travel. There have been some restorations over the years with some replaced parts and added nails. There are some misses in the right front and rear bottom corners that have not been restored. This is a Gorgeous Antique Wooden Chest that was most probably used a Silverware Chest- Box or Jewelry Chest. Very elaborate. The lightly padded silk lining is handpainted with Daisies with a corded trim surround in light blue and ivory. The silk that surrounds the flowers is a gathered ivory. The interior is a gathered pale blue silk lining The recessed handles on the chest are nickel plated brass. The woods of the box are fabulous- Mahogany and Burl. There are two pull out drawers. I don't know what these were previously lined with. They are currently lined with burgandy loose velvet pieces. The box- chest has a key which(when closed) can be locked. The lock does work. An old original fab steamer chest with lots of metal banding and end cap brackets. It is a original steamer chest from circa 1900's and would have been used on the ships of old Metal handles at each side. Front locks and clasps there is no longer any key for the middle lock long gone. Four hardwood slats on top with one at the front and back also. It is approx. half the height of the standard ones. So would be great for any room in the house to make a great look and not take up to much space. The chest has a nice shiny bri wax finish. The trunk bears the maker's mark(badge) on top over the lock: Henry Likly& Co. Makers. Rochester, NY, Established 1844, Trade Mark This is a Flat Top trunk. Which makes it particularly good for use as a coffee table. This is an older restoration and all the original hardware and materials are still there. The refinish is not perfect and still maintains much of the same appearance it did as when Henry Likly first delivered the trunk. It has been in a home that used it everyday and never left in storage not being used. This trunk originally came with Leather Straps. Fragments of which still remain. This trunk has Wooden(oak) Slats. Refinished and stained. The ... morelock is open and appears to be functional. But we don't have the key. The exterior surface of the trunk is fabric over wooden construction. The fabric is intact with a few rips or scuffs. The fabric has been sealed to stay bonded to the wood. The corners and some of the edges are metal bound. The metal has been recoated and looks great with the pings and dings from being around a 100 plus years. The leather handles on the ends are now gone. New leather is needed there. Inside. The fabric covering is intact and in decent condition. The interior has zero smell and not mildewed. An old original Victorian blanket box. As its well over a hundred years old. It will have marks, old wood worm holes, small bows and splits but I think it all adds charm. The box was fully treated for woodworm to be safe and secure from any little beasties several weeks ago Inside has the original fish tail hinges and it still has its lock and upper keep in the lid but the key is long gone lost over time The chest has a nice shiny bri wax finish. 1900'S GARGOYLE FIGURAL FACE CARVED OAK WOODEN TRUNK/CHEST NORTH WIND WOOD ORNAT
THIS IS A EARLY TRUNK FROM AROUND THE 1920'S MEASURING 40.5" X 19" AND 20.5" TALL THE LID HAS A SLIGHT CURVE ON EITHER FRONT CORNER. THE GARGOYLE FACE HAS A OLD CHIP TO THE TOP OF THE FACE. SEE PHOTOS FOR DETAILS. THIS TRUNK HAS A NICE PATINA. EXPECT IMPERFECTIONS. THERE IS A HOLE WHICH IS MOST LIKELY ORIGINAL TO THE WOOD ON THE RIGHT HAND SIDE ON THE TRUNK UP BY THE TOP. ABOUT 1" BLENDS IN WITH PIECE. THERE ARE TWO PLUGS. ONE ON EITHER SIDE OF THE TOP, THEY KIND OF LINE UP. THE PLUGS GO ALL THE WAY THROUGH THE LID. STRUCTURALLY THIS PIECE IS SOUND. VERY STURDY. THE HINGES ARE NEWER. THE FEET IN THE BACK ARE ROUND. PROBABLY NOT ORIGINAL. FEEL FREE TO ASK QUESTIONS.
