It features 2 shelves and sits atop coasters so that it can be rolled about. The top shelf goes through the piece entirely while the bottom shelf is divided in 2 equal size shelfs on each side of the piece. It is in excellent condition and is quite sturdy and ready to use. It does have some light surface scratches but nothing that would not be expeceted of a vintage piece of this age. It can also be used as a table so it can serve more than one purpose. It stands 26 inches tall and the top measures 26 1/2 inches wide by 16 1/2 inches deep. The middle shelf measures 22 inches by 14 inches. These steps were made in England sometime around 1900 and we have recently imported them into our Atlanta. GA antique furniture store. Library steps like this were designed to allow someone to reach the top shelves of the bookcases in their libraries. Some are simple but others like this one are more decorative and add elegance as well as utility to the room they inhabit. The wood used is solid ... moremahogany and the stairs themselves are covered in a green leather with gold tooling. A mahogany pole is central to the steps allowing one a place to use their left hand to keep balance while perusing books with the right. This pole is topped with a decorative brass cap. These antique library steps are in very good condition. The only wear is some superficial surface wear to the stairs as you can see in the photos. Structurally the steps are sound. At 180 pounds I am able to climb to the top stair and feel very stable. This is a very unusual find and would make a really interesting addition to any room with tall bookcases. These antique library steps are sturdy and beautiful. The four stairs spiral around the balance pole. Here you can see some of the minor surface wear to each step. The mahogany feet are quite sturdy. As I believe they had a brand called Library Bureau. Its hardware& moldings look similar to some of the Globe styles. In any case. It's a nice bookcase in good shape, with very clean lines, nice golden-oak color and appears to be constructed of mainly quarter-sawn oak with little if any veneer on the main exposed parts(excepting the back of course, and possibly the bottoms inside which look like a clear maple) The finish appears intact, with its age-related character. We've given this a cleaning, you may want to go further with perhaps some steel wool, decades of office-life generally leave these old barristers with their typical use-related'Character' ... moreplease see the photos) which to my eye is all part of the antique. We used this piece for holding antiquarian natural history books and art-books. For which it works excellently. But old Barrister Bookcases are great for displaying many sorts of things, keeping them dust-free& safe. Iron grillwork and stained glass doors, all entirely original and dating from about 1915. Masterfully hand carved details include heads. Griffins, a painter's palette and a compass, symbols of knowledge and culture. The original finish is extremely well preserved on walnut wood with very minor mars at the edges. Waxed and polished. Only an occasional wipe with a soft dry cloth is needed to maintain its warm antique patina. Working locks and hardware are also original. Three banks of shelves adjust on wooden supports. Just acquired out of a private Midwest estate we are able to offer this exceptionally nice. Circa 1900-1910 ~ SOLID QUARTER SAWN GOLDEN OAK REVOLVING BOOKCASE WITH A TWO TIER TABLE TOP SHELF ~. This fine quality revolving bookcase is quite unique and has a wonderful look as you will see. It has a very unique, handy two tier shelf top and many different compartments for the storage of books. There are individual celluloid numbers below the book shelves to help you locate your desired reference book. The numbers go up to 34 and it looks like there may have been 35 and 36 as well but they are not there. It measures 43 1/2 inches tall by about 26 inches square. The sections to store the books measure about 13 3/4 inches tall by 9 1/2 inches deep by 14 1/2 inches wide" some of them are only 11 1/2 inches wide" We have never seen another ... moreone like it, and i9magine it is a fairly hard to find, desirable example. The over all condition is pretty nice with some expected wear from age and use. All in all, it was actually very well cared for over the past 100 years or so. There are some small separations between the some of the boards on the two top shelves. It is very sturdy and is in ready to use condition. We left this bookcase exactly as it was when discovered in the estate and did not do a thing to it. It has been is storage for quite some time. It revolves just fine and rolls on the castor wheels very nice as well. I believe that the finish is original and it is actually quite nice with a rich warm patina. The stand is on wheels, and the casters are in very good shape with no cracks or chips. The shelf parts are oak and have no gouges, carved initials, any writing at all on them. The shelves can be set flat or at angles to hold a book open, and can be moved wider(stretched out) to accomodate large books such as atlases, art books. The stand is adjustable in height and the shelves, which have a narrow edge, can be set at angles or left horizontal. The whole stand can be taken apart for transporting or storage. I have two oak library/stock rolling ladders for sale. They are made by PUTNAM LADDER COMPANY out of New York. Go to their website to see more pictures. Information, and pricing for these high quality ladders. These ladders are generally used for home libraries, lofts, stock rooms, kitchens, wine cellars, and closets. You may see them in stores at the shopping malls, such as Foot Locker, Walden Books, and Brooks Brothers.The cost for the ladders is $1000 each. 975.00 for the pair or best offer free shipping because its pick up only. The steps are screwed to rails, not nailed, and rods are placed under each step, for greater strength. The ladders are 10' tall and the steps are 16" wide. I have the hardware(bottom rollers/top brackets) for the ladders and two 8' pieces of track per ladder(it is basically black iron pipe that you could get at a fence company) for the top brackets on the ladders to attach to. You can find detailed diagrams/installation instructions at Putnam's website. but these cost 750.00 each.starting the bidding at 975.00 for both.These ladders are an absolute steal for this price and would look great in any home or office.
