Superb Cotswold School oak book trough rack arts crafts A. Peters Barnsley Heals
This is a superb Cotswold School oak and coromandel wood book trough. The quality of this piece is so easy to see. It is so lavish and over the top with exposed construction. The additional use of contrasting luxury woods is further evidence that this was a top quality piece when it was made. The through tenons and contrasting foxwedges act as a real decorative feature. As do the stylish canted edges. The quality of this piece can be further seen with the fine mitre joint in the coromandel edging. I imagine that this piece was made around 1950. It very much looks like the work produced by Alan Peters when he was working and training at the Barnsley workshop. I cannot definitely attribute it to him though. 1930s nautical art deco book trough rack desk stand chrome oak walnut w/ galleon
A superb original 1930s art deco nautical themed book trough/book rack measuring 14.5 inches long by 9.25 inches wide(foot width) and 8.25 inches high. The book trough has rounded ends made from oak with lovely inlaid cloudburst in satinwood with a galleon and crashing waves in relief in various woods and veneers. The shaped feet are in oak with a plain oak frieze to the front and raised oak edge to the back. There is a polished steel base with further polished steel stretcher to the rear. The trough has been used and does show some surface marks and scratches and some small additional pins for support have been added over time. Some marks and scratches to the steel in places. Some small white paint spots in places. Structurally sound and free from worm. Actual area for books is 12.5 inches long. Description: Here is a great piece from a local estate sale. This folding book rack belonged to the brother of the elderly woman who sold it to me. She said her brother had just started at Oxford University in England the year that the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor and he packed up and came home to join the army and became a pilot and was shot down over the Pacific. She said he had bought the book rack in Oxford and it was one of the few things from there he brought home with him. She said that it was never really used and sat for decades. Folded up on a shelf in her parents living room. This makes sense because the top side shows that it was exposed to sunlight and dust over the years but the backsides of the book ends look smooth and almost new. There is some nice inlay on the end pieces and it all has a wonderful color and patina remaining ... moreon it as you can see in my pictures. Please look at all the pictures to judge color and condition for yourself. The rack measures around 16 1/2" long x 6” wide x 6 ¾” tall when opened.
