For sale are 5 antique Luxfer prism tiles! Each tile is 4" x 4" These have a great lavender hue to them. They came out of a building in downtown St. Louis a few years back. They are from between 1890- 1910. These were used so they are not in perfect condition. However they can still be used to make a number of things including putting them back into windows, coasters, or a number of different things! These are really very beautiful and are not something that you can find all the time. These are all the same design. The use of Manganese in architectural glass ceased during WW I.To conserve metals for the war effort,so these panes are more than likely from the 1920's,based on it's clear color. It's possible that they were never installed and from the earlier 1900's. In excellent condition,bear in mind that these may have been cut from a larger sheet and there are tiny imperfections on the edges and maybe a couple of insigificant fleabites elsewhere. Antique glass prism tile that is a nice light amethyst or purple coloration. Beautiful art deco flower design. That was designed and patented by architect, Frank Lloyd Wright in 1897. 4" x 4" in size. Flower design on the one side and the prismatic saw tooth design on the other side. These were used in windows on old store fronts to refract sunlight into the stores or buildings for light. Here's a great prism glass tile in the raindrop pattern. What makes this one unusual is the light green color. And the raindrop pattern is different from any other raindrop pattern tiles I have ever seen. I can tell by looking at it was not made by Luxfer. Their drops are wider. It was not made by American Three-Way because their drops are much more defined. This does not made by Solar Prism Glass Co. because their drops were shorter. Whatever they are unusual. Because of the light green color, and the design is a mystery as to who actually made them. These were found in one installation in a commercial building on Main Street in Kansas. I've seen green raindrops and a darker teal color that were made by Condie Neale. But they are different from this design as well. "Luxfer like" Antique prism glass tile, rare, two prism angles intstead of one.
A rare find for the collector is this plain flat faced prism glass tile. Check out the prism side to see that it actually features 2 different prism angles! Most prism tiles were molded with only one. This double prism tile spreads the light out more. Making the need for less different angled tile's to be produced. The tile has an embossing of FP on the prism side of the tile. I'm not sure who made this one. A lot of companys jumped on the prism glass band wagon as there success grew. Many ended up getting sued for patent infringments or just couldn't compete with the established companies and went out of bussiness. Also a lot of architects didn't like to spend the time needed figuring out which prism angles worked best for the building being designed. The result of some of there"grumbles" were tiles featuring a ... moregeneric(light up the middle) angle. My hunch is this double prism design was catering to this matter. Also I'll note that it is thicker then your average prism tile. Feel free to ask any questions. Refer to the pictures to see the tile. I bought a small batch of these for my own collection. Antique Luxfer prism glass tile sun catcher restored!
What is a prism glass tile? These tiles came into being in the late 1800's as comercial buildings became crammed together with out the ability to have windows on four sides. A regular pane of glass only lets light into the front of a building. Prism glass changes the angle of the light and casts it far back into the the building. Reducing the need for oil lamps. Combining tiles with different prism angles allowed for a"perscription" window custom tailered to your store or factorys needs. These tiles were very popular through the early 1900's finally becoming obsolete(late 1920's or early 1930's) as electricity came in with the light bulb. This piece features a snowflake like geometric pattern with a nice green border. This size gives the feel of what they were like as they were originally large transom windows. Rebuilt ... morewith all new zinc came(the metal bars that hold it together) The zinc is made by the same company that has been making metal framming materials since the late 1800's! These tiles are about 100 years old(possibly up to 115) and they have a few chips in some of the tiles(see photo's for example of one tile) Don't let that detract from the piece. It's a great historical conversation subject. Measurements are 31 inches by 31& 1/4 inches. The tile's are about a 1/4 inch thick so the they are heavier then regular glass. The total wieght is 20 lbs +/ Local pick up only, I might be willing to deliver part way if I can combine a day trip into the equation. Also this piece is ment for display not a water tight window. All new metal framing in the same style used in that period has been"blacken" to give it an older look(see close up photo for a better color representation) I included about a foot(per side) of hanging chain. If your not familiar with prism glass. It came about in the late 1800's mostly for commericail building tansom windows. As buildings became bigger and squeezed together without the ability to have windows on four sides, lighting became a problem. Windows in store fronts only lit up the front and left the back of the building to use gas lighting or candles(remember this is pre-electric times! Prism glass used in large transom windows refracted the natural light inwards reducing or eliminating the need for costly ... morelamps, and reducing the risk of fire. These tiles are a 100+ years old and do have a few VERY MINOR chips on the back prism side. I took a picture of one tile that had a chip in it(see photo) for accuaracy. Also there is some distortion in the clear tiles from the original molding process. I think it's kind of neat. I read before that early on they couldn't produce tiles bigger then 4 inch as they would break or have other problems with the mold. These issuses were over come later on as much larger panes of prism glass were produced geared more towards factory windows. Also the solder used is leaded(like 99.5% of all stained glass) Feel free to ask questions. Don't be scared about chips as they are so minor! This is a vintage glass prism tile. It is a nice Amethyst color. The Torch pattern is on the front. The Sawtooth cut is on back. Based on what I could find online. I believe that this pattern was made by the Jupiter Glass Company. The tile measures 4" x 4" There is an"E" on one corner of the sawtooth side. There are two chips on the sawtooth side and some small flea bites. We had an elderly friend who collected purple and amethyst glass for many years, often treasure hunting all over Nevada and California. He gifted us with this glass back in the 80's. We are getting older and wanting to send our treasures to new homes where they can be appreciated. We have looked for this pattern for years and have only found it in a museum. Great piece! Prism glass tile. Made by American 3-Way Luxfer Prism Company in the early 1900's. Prism glass tiles were used in the storefronts of buildings before electric lights to refract and reflect sunlight into the interior.The use of prism glass was common during the deco period, and is exemplified by the glass roof and glass-embedded floor of the Penn Station building in NYC. This tile has a spiral design on the front. Good vintage condition with no cracks, but some imperfections such as tiny chips on the edges and paint or cement residue. Clear glass. Large lot of 20 tile. Would make beautiful large window or combine with my other auction to create a stunning dual pattern effect.
