DESCRIPTION: An elegant chest of drawers-c. 1950-designed by the acclaimed British architect and furniture designer. Terence Harold Robsjohn-Gibbings(1905-1976) From 1943 until 1956, Robsjohn-Gibbings was the lead designer for the Widdicomb Furniture Company of Grand Rapids, Michigan. During this time, Widdicomb was widely known for its production of stylish and well-crafted Modernist furniture. The solidity of this piece exemplifies Widdicomb's high standard in furniture-making. It has both the Widdicomb/Gibbings tag and the stamped-metal seal for Grand Rapids Furniture(see photos) Widdicomb carried several versions of this chest of drawers, mostly in six drawers(tall or short) or three drawers. This chest, with double dove-tail construction, has three wide drawers set within a bezeled frame. The exterior wood is a bleached-walnut veneer. ... moreThe top drawer has compartments and a Widdicomb label(see photos) It also has a removable box for use in one of the drawers. The dresser, which is heavy, moves on recessed metal casters. DIMENSIONS: 51 1/4" L x 21" D x 31" H CONDITION: Partially restored. It originally had attached shelving with glass doors. When we acquired it, the shelving had been detached and only a portion of it remained. The entire piece was also spray-painted avocado green. We concentrated on repairing and refinishing the chest of drawers without the shelving. The paint has been removed, and the exterior has been carefully repaired, sanded, stained, and refinished. When we stripped the paint, the exposed walnut veneer on the top surface had a sharp contrast between the original brown patinated veneer-protected beneath the shelving-and the veneer bleached by years of exposure to sunlight(see photo) The remedies for this disparity were replacing the top veneer, which would not match the bleached walnut elsewhere on the piece, or painting the chest. A beautifully constructed. Solid ensemble of a low dresser with two matching night stands. These heavy pieces were manufactured by the well-known White Furniture of North Carolina(which ceased business in 1993) the markings on the rear panels identify Providence probably signifying either the name of this line. This bedroom furniture appears to be from about 1965. The pieces have richly veined& feathered walnut veneer with brass collars on the legs. Brass frames on the sunken panels of the drawers, floral-medallion brass pulls, and brass ornament(wreath and garland) in relief(typical of English Regency/French Empire design) The tables have one drawer and two out swinging panels enclosing a compartment. As with most furniture of this age-about 50 years-there is some wear to the lacquered top surfaces(a few scratches and the lacquer is ... moreworn away in a few places-the top surfaces could be lightly sanded and resprayed with lacquer) There's also a small chip on the one of the legs of the dresser and some wear on one corner of the top of the dresser. Vintage Paine Furniture Co., Two-Tone Wooden 4 Drawer Dresser / Buffet
This belonged to my fiancé's mother. It was manufactured by the Paine Furniture Company. Boston, Mass. I believe it is mahogany. The drawers are dovetail construction, and there are dust panels separating the drawers. It measures 50" long by 21.5" deep by 35" tall. The 2 small drawers on top measure 20.75" wide by 17.25" deep, the 2 bigger drawers measure 43" wide by 17.25" deep. It has tall, detailed legs. The finish is rough, there are scuffs, scratches and some stains, but it has good bone structure. There are 2 cutouts on the back of the top to install a mirror or hutch, but I do not have the mirror. The legs are nice, turned wood. The front legs have a little more character than the rear ones.
