DISCUSSION: Two houses have stood on an ancient street in Providence. Once called Angell's Lane and now called Thomas Street, since the 18th century- the Dodge House and the Brick House, both built by a remarkable artisan named Seril Dodge. Dodge came to Angell's Lane in 1784 and set himself up as a clockmaker, a trade at which he became very successful. By 1789 he was also advertising for silver and working as a silversmith, specializing in spoons and shoe buckles. In fact, it was said at the time that the two fine houses he built were"paid for.in silver buckles" Dodge also dealt at various times with the well-known Brown family of Providence. Eventually the Providence Art Club came into possession of the houses and half of this book is devoted to the history of the Club from its founding in the 1880s, and its members and their exhibitions and hijinks. There is also material on the history of this section of Providence through the centuries, but three chapters are devoted in one way or another to Seril Dodge, his life, his clocks and his silver(both of which Miner illustrates, including a lovely cream pitcher) and his houses. Antique Fireplace Mantel Oak Mantle Very nice oak fireplace mantel- very heavy It does not have a mirror but opening is 17 3/8 x 35 1/4 The fireplace opening is 38 1/4 x 41 1/2 The two columns are 3 1/2 diameter The unit is 61 in wide x 84 3/4 tall Check out the Decorative trim! The real only flaws are that it has been painted which still looks nice but I am one who likes the original wood. It has two spots that the edge trim is broke on the top shelf. Other than that it is a great piece! The old signs in the one picture are not included. Buyer must arrange packaging/shipping or pickup in Kansas City.

DISCUSSION: Williams begins his essay in the dim ages of antiquity before exploring the woodcarver's art in Europe and England from the early times through the 17th and 18th centuries. He spends most of his time in England and Italy. Although France and Germany are certainly not neglected. He then returns to the Far East and ancient times in an appendix. The author came from an architectural background and approached his subject with the eye of the architectural historian, ... moretreating not only sculpture but also all other types of decorative carving to be found in churches, cathedrals and the great houses. Mantelpieces, railings, even furniture fascinated him, and he treated all as more or less equal products of the chisel. Williams has an eye for the odd- There are many bas-reliefs. Particularly those carved underneath the seats of the choirs of different religious structures, that represent grotesque, and even obscene subjects, altogether at variance with the sacred character of the buildings in which they are placed. What may be thought most singular, is, that these sculptures sometimes represent priests and other religious persons, engaged in actions of a very profane description. The sculptors who executed those carvings were the caricaturists of the time; and, as different religious communities were frequently at variance with each other, they employed these artists to satirize their mutual follies and vices. Antique Lot of 2 Porcelain Italian Tiles Hand Painted Italy vintage architecture
This auction is for a lot of 2 antique tiles. I was told from the previous owner that they were from her family and were brought over to the US from Italy. She said they came off of a building maybe from inside a building in Italy but were at least 100 years old. That is the story I was told. I would say they do have some age and they appear to be hand painted. One has cracks and has been glued back together. Not the best job but it is holding. Each measures approx 5 inches by 5 inches. Wonderful antique corbel from an old home in Charleston. SC. It came from an estate and is in original condition, with paint that is quite old. Very solid, measuring: 23 3/4" tall 14" deep 10 1/4" wide Made of heart pine. I'm guessing, because it weighs at least 14 lbs and is close-grained. All the pieces of the original design are there, still attached, and there are few small cracks and one little nick. Remarkable condition for its age, really(again, I'm guessing, but at least back to the turn of the century because of the size and design) Please note: this has not been packed for shipment. WELCOME! This listing is for a pair of metal finials that are teal/grean/blue in color. They are metal. Maybe tin? Or Aluminum? They are fairly light weight and gray metal color on the inside. The pieces measure approximately 34 1/2" high and 10 7/8" square at the base. The finials have some wear but are in overall very good condition. I do not know the age or origin but they are very cool old pieces that would look great in your home or garden. They can be repainted to your liking. There are some(old) places where the metal is slightly separated, but the finials are stable, not wobbly or loose, etc. It is rare to find two matching finials of this size.
