Found in the south of France. A large Roman bronze bowl, this came from an area near La Turbie which in Roman times was a significant military outpost and important military base for several centuries. It is exactly as it came out of the ground, it hasn't been cleaned at all. There is loss to the base as you can see in the photos but what remains is perfectly solid and stable. It is a thick bowl of good quality, sometimes these things were thin sheet but this is heavier and a better made item. The diameter accross the top is 10 1/4 inches and it stands 2 1/8 inch tall. Roman terra sigillata shards found at Vechten(The Netherlands) Some information about Fectio(Vechten) Fectio. Modern Vechten, was a fort in the limes, the frontier zone of the Roman empire, situated at the site of the bifurcation of the rivers Rhine(which continued to the North Sea) and Vecht(to Lake Flevo and the Frisians) Numismatic evidence suggests that it was founded by the Roman general Tiberius(the future emperor) during the campaigns of 4/5. It was probably used as a military base during punitive raids. The civil settlement of Fectio was probably to the east of the fort. But excavation is not easy because there is a nineteenth-century military settlement on the site(Fort Vechten) However, the ancient fort itself is, together with Nijmegen, Vechten is one of the best excavated sites in the Netherlands; in 1894, it was the site of one ... moreof the first excavations of a Roman ship. In 40. The emperor Caligula visited Fectio when he was travelling to Lugdunum. The remains of a wine barrel from his personal vinyard have been found. Some thirty years later, the fortress was destroyed during the Batavian revolt and rebuilt as base of a cavalry squadron. The nearby Rhine had already started to silt up, and was later to change its course. Pottery from the kilns of the Tweny-second legion Primigenia at Xanten belongs to this period. During the reign of Antoninus Pius(138-161) the fort was again rebuilt. This time from brick and natural stone. However, by 200, the river had become silted-up and Fectio was no longer accessible by water. The military settlement was destroyed in 275 and not reoccupied. See also my other items. Including works in stone, plaster and wood, it becomes quite blurred on other media such as metalwork and pottery. Between the 5th and the 8th century glass production seems unchanged, although the surviving objects would still point to an industry that persisted and thrived, almost careless of the political and religious turmoils of the Ummayad era, including the death of the prophet Muhammad. Perhaps, the diffusion of glass- blowing and the consequent paucity of high quality glass after the crumbling of the Roman Empire might have hampered the rulers' sponsorship of ... moreglassmaking, yet during this period glass became more accessible for mundane use and thus, by loosing its status value, less attractive to affluent patrons. Late Roman glass made along the coasts of modern Syria, Lebanon, Israel and Egypt that is usually classified as'eastern Mediterranean� thus kept on being produced during the early Islamic period. Its features include the decoration with applied trails that could be pulled either from the same glass batch or from a different one. Applied trails were also used functionally as handles and feet; commonly the thread was patterned in zigzags or simple spirals. While weathering due to burial often prevents a full appreciation of the chromatic as well as the sculptural appeal of a glass vessel many have survived in excellent condition and still convey a playful charm. I am not an expert in Archeology. But after consulting some experts in this area, found out it is an authentic original Archeological figurine, exact source unknow, probable from the near-east, at least 2000 years old made of Terracotta/clay. Showing woman's head with a sort of hair-cut. Stuck on a column attached to wood base. The head measures 4.5 cm long and 4.5 cm. wide. An authentic find.
