Superb Intact Large Roman Military Silver Intaglio Ring of Minerva c 80 - 180 AD
On offer is this Roman silver intaglio ring depicting Minerva(Athena) the goddess of wisdom and war. She is wearing a helmet. Whilst grasping a spear with one hand and holding her trusty Owl in the other. Her round Spartan shield rests up against her back legs. The carnelian gemstone intaglio is quite small, so the details have been cut with suggestive lines. Such a ring would have been worn by an officer or centurion serving within the Roman Legions. Minerva was much favoured amongst commanding officers, due to the effect of the wise planning she facilitated. Being the goddess of wisdom and war, she helped to make good strategic decisions, before and during battle. This silver ring is in excellent condition.
