Roman terra sigillata pottery sherds found at Vechten(The Netherlands) The shard with the cow is repaired with glue. One shard(left) is part of an terra ... moresigillata oillamp. One shard has a stamp: CAPITO? Some information about Fectio(Vechten) Fectio. Modern Vechten, was a fort in the limes, the frontier zone of the Roman empire, situated at the site of the bifurcation of the rivers Rhine(which continued to the North Sea) and Vecht(to Lake Flevo and the Frisians) Numismatic evidence suggests that it was founded by the Roman general Tiberius(the future emperor) during the campaigns of 4/5. It was probably used as a military base during punitive raids. The civil settlement of Fectio was probably to the east of the fort. But excavation is not easy because there is a nineteenth-century military settlement on the site(Fort Vechten) However, the ancient fort itself is, together with Nijmegen, Vechten is one of the best excavated sites in the Netherlands; in 1894, it was the site of one of the first excavations of a Roman ship. In 40. The emperor Caligula visited Fectio when he was travelling to Lugdunum. The remains of a wine barrel from his personal vinyard have been found. Some thirty years later, the fortress was destroyed during the Batavian revolt and rebuilt as base of a cavalry squadron. The nearby Rhine had already started to silt up, and was later to change its course. Pottery from the kilns of the Tweny-second legion Primigenia at Xanten belongs to this period. During the reign of Antoninus Pius(138-161) the fort was again rebuilt. This time from brick and natural stone. However, by 200, the river had become silted-up and Fectio was no longer accessible by water. The military settlement was destroyed in 275 and not reoccupied. See also my other items. Two years ago. At the World's Longest Yard Sale,I bought a huge lot of vintage dollhouse furniture accessories, etc. There were lots of great things ... morein those boxes, but this took first prize! I only wish that I knew more about it! It is terra cotta or something similar. The inside of the opening is dark red with a texture, black on the outside. There is another band of the dark red below the neck this is encircled with xoxoxox s. The main decoration is 5 men,two with spears and shields, ready to do battle. Two more are holding round objects, perhaps the discus. The last is seated on a red stool, with outstretched arm.Below these is a wide black band that extends all the way to the bottom of the urn.I think the condition is fabulous, colors are intense and details amazing! However, it is missing one handle-there are there some"rubbed" places under the opening and on the balck at the bottom, how many"ancient" urns are discovered completely intact. There are some letters oe symbols on the bottom, but I can't decifer! This gorgeous urn measures 1 1/2 inches tall 7/8 across the top and about 1 3/4 inches at widest point. This would be a beautiful addition to a miniature garden or perhaps a museum room box! I am listing more vintage dollhouse miniatures and furniture kits this week. I am happy to combine shipping. CLASSIFICATION: Hand Cut Semi-Precious Jade Amulet. Hand-Drilled Suspension Hole(Bow Drill) ATTRIBUTION: Ancient China. Han Dynasty(206BC-220AD) SIZE/DIMENSIONS: Weight: 8.00 carats. The default chain(absent contrary instructions) is gold electroplate, 24 inches. For a more authentic touch, we also have available handcrafted Greek black leather cords. CONDITION: Exceptional! Completely intact. DETAIL: A hand carved jade pendant about 2.000 years old attributable to the Han Dynasty of ancient China, about 1st century B.C. What lapis lazuli, carnelian, and turquoise was to the cultures of the ancient Mediterranean and Mesopotamia, including the Greeks, Egyptians, Romans, Sumerians, and Babylonians; jade was to the ancient Chinese. It was the gemstone of gemstones, it’s name synonymous with“gold” in other languages. Good as gold” the golden age” such expressions would have used the word“yu” for jade, rather than the word gold. This pendant seems to have two“faces” to it. With the point(the narrow end) on the bottom it seems to be a stylized face. But with the point at the top, as it seemingly would have intended to be worn, it seems to depict two figures, back to back, sitting beneath a tree. It might be a reference to the male and female personification of“Yin and Yang” The symbolism of Yin-Yang, also known as“Tai-Chi” refers to the I-Ching concept of the cycles of life, the balance between them, sometimes equated with the cyclical relatio

Handsome, Decorated ... moreAncient Terra Cotta Oil Lamp about 100 A.D. Roman Provincial Moesia(Bulgaria) CLASSIFICATION: Roman Provincial Moesia Decorated Terra Cotta Oil Lamp. ATTRIBUTION: Roman Provincial Moesia. First Century A.D. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Length: 79 millimeters(3 1/8 inches) Width: 69 millimeters(2 5/8 inches) Height: 22 millimeters(7/8 inch) CONDITION: Good integrity. All original with no repairs. Some very hard and stubborn alkaline soil deposits inside of bowl. Moderate wear around fill hole consistent with use in the ancient world. DETAIL: This is a well preserved terracotta oil lamp dated to the first century A.D. Its origin is Roman Provincial Moseia. Present-day Bulgaria. The top surface of the oil lamp portrays an impressed braided pattern around the rim of the fill hole, a little indistinct, but basically a geometric pattern of a chain of small rectangles. There’s also a trademark of some sort on the underside surface of the pedestal. It too is a bit indistinct, but it seems to be a circle with a two characters inside the circle. It’s not possible really to determine whether they might have been letters or merely figures. But clearly the pedestal contains a trademark. It was not uncommon for the artisans who produced these pieces to leave some sort of“trade mark” on the underside of the pedestal so as to identify it as their produce. The style is very characteristic of the lamps manufactured for domestic use in the Roman Provinces. As can be seen the design elements of the vessel are even after the passage of almost 2.000 years, by and large intact intact. Though by no means rare, it is uncommon to find such a nice design in such a well-preserved state– whole and relatively intact with no major breakage or repairs. The vessel was of course buried for somewhere around two thousand years in the soil. As a consequence of this prolonged burial there are some

CLASSIFICATION: Roman/Moesian Terra Cotta Oil Lamp of Very Basic and Simple Style. ATTRIBUTION: Roman Provincial Moesia(Present-Day Bulgaria) First Century A.D. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Length: 78 millimeters(3 1/8 inches) Width: 66 millimeters(2 2/3 inches) Height: 24 millimeters(1 inch) CONDITION: Excellent. Typical soot stains around wick hole indicative of ancient use. Some alkaline deposits. DETAIL: This is a very nicely preserved red-colored terracotta oil lamp dated to the first century A.D. Its origin is Roman Provincial Moesia. Present-day Bulgaria. This is a very basic, simple and common style– you could call it“generic” It is the“Volkswagon” of oil lamps, a very basic and simple style for simple and limited budgets– something you would find in the home of the ordinary man of the first century A.D. Though by no means rare, it is uncommon to find such a nicely preserved specimen and in such pristine condition. Though there are some rather hard alkaline deposits inside the bowl of the oil lamp, it is in otherwise very good condition, sound, unbroken. There’s also a trademark of some sort on the underside surface of the pedestal. It too is a bit indistinct. But it seems to be either a Roman numeral“I” or perhaps simply a line. However a single line seems rather unlikely, a trademark should mean something. SO it seems most likely that it would have been intended to signify the numeral 1. It was not uncommon for the artisans who produced these pieces to leave some sort of“trade mark” on the underside of the pedestal so as to identify it as their produce. The style is very characteristic of the lamps manufactured for domestic use in the Roman Provinces from Pannonia(Hungary) to Moesia(Bulgaria) And even in Rome itself. Oil was filled into the cente

Large Roman Terra Cotta Vessel/Jug
Up for auction is a large Roman Terra Cotta Vessel/Jug. This vessel/jug was found in Bulgaria where divers found it in a ship wreckage along with Roman coins. Dimensions are approximately 15”H x 10”W diameter; base is 5” the opening of the jug is 2” outside to outside and 1 1/8”inside to inside. The outside has a shiny glaze over parts of it and what looks like a water line mark. The lower part does not have the shiny glaze and the coloring in the terra cotta is worn. There are defined rings at the top and around the neck. The top neck and handle broke. But have been repaired. The vessel/jug is in overall great condition except for the fine breaks noted above and in the pictures. The other marks shown in pictures are rub marks or a surface scrape. There are no visible cracks or holes in the body. Few minor chips on the bottom edge and on ... morethe sides. You can feel ridges inside the opening neck area which is a sign that it was wheel made by hand. This is a very beautiful. Interesting vessel/jug that would be great to add to a collection. We accept PayPal only and payment is due within 48 hours from your commitment to buy. We ship out within 3 business days after your payment clears. Sorry we only ship in the United States.

ROMAN TERRA RUBRA SHARDS with decoration pottery ceramics Romain Romano Römisch
Roman pottery shards found at Vechten(The Netherlands) Some information about Fectio(Vechten) Fectio. But excavation is not easy because there is a nineteenth-century military settlement on the site(Fort Vechten) However, the ancient fort itself is, together with Nijmegen, Vechten is one of the best excavated sites in the Netherlands; in 1894, it was the site of one of the ... morefirst excavations of a Roman ship. Third CENTURY ROMAN Empire OIL LAMP EROTIC RELIEF sex scene terra-cotta lamp
This is a great piece of history that would make a fine addition to any collection of antiquity. The lamp has been repaired. See photos with cracks, this lamp was likely found together, though broken. I included the photo of the lamp with Roman coins to give the lamp some perspective in terms of size. I bought this piece in London 21 years ago from a shop around the corner from the British Museum. Specializing in roman antiquity. According to their expertise the lamp came from the years 225-260 A.D. based on the archeological site the lamp came from. I'm selling ancient coins. RARE ANCIENT ROMAN TERRA SIGILLATA RED GLOSS SAMIAN WARE PLATE/CHARGER w/RELIEF
This is a very rare authentic Ancient Roman Terra Sigillata red gloss(or Samian Ware) plate or charger. It is beautifully decorated in relief work. With a large central rosette surrounded by a vine and rosette motif, with an unusual rope and leaf border. The piece measures 11" in diameter, and about 1 1/8" tall. The front has the remains of the old glaze, the back is unglazed. There is an old repaired portion, which is common with ancient pottery. There is also a small hole in one of the petals of the central rosette. I have owned this for years, I bought it from a local antique dealer who has since passed away, so unfortunately I do not have any real provenance for the piece. I had this looked at by several specialists in the field of Ancient Roman artifacts and they all agree that it is definitely Ancient Roman dating to the 1st ... morecentury AD, and quite rare on todays market. These are the kinds of pieces you only see in museums. You will be very pleased.

large roman samian ware/terra sigillata fragm. with rare maker stamp ca100-300AD
The Roman Empire was the post-Republican phase of the ancient Roman civilization. Characterised by an autocratic form of government and large territorial holdings in Europe and around the Mediterranean. The term is used to describe the Roman state during and after the time of the first emperor, Augustus. The 500-year-old Roman Republic. Which preceded it, had been weakened and subverted through several civil wars. Several events are commonly proposed to mark the transition from Republic to Empire, including Julius Caesar's appointment as perpetual dictator(44 BC) the Battle of Actium(2 September 31 BC) and the Roman Senate's granting to Octavian the honorific Augustus(4 January 27 BC) Roman expansion began in the days of the Republic, but reached its zenith under Emperor Trajan. At this territorial peak, the Roman Empire controlled ... moreapproximately 6.5 million km² of land surface. Because of the Empire's vast extent and long endurance, the institutions and culture of Rome had a profound and lasting influence on the development of language, religion, architecture, philosophy, law, and forms of government in the territory it governed, particularly Europe, and by means of European expansionism throughout the modern world. ROMAN TERRA SIGILATA OR SIGILLATA FRAGMENTS OF ANCIENT ROMAN VESSEL DOMESTIC CROCKERY POT DECORATIVE ROMAN ITS VERY INTERESTING IT CAN BE A MUSEUM PIECE ITS VERY NICE ROMAN COLLECTION ITEM Terra sigillata as an archaeological term refers chiefly to a specific type of plain and decorated tableware made in Italy and in Gaul(France and the Rhineland) during the Roman Empire. These vessels have glossy surface ranging from a soft lustre to a brilliant glaze-like shine. In a characteristic colour range from pale orange to bright red; they were produced in standard shapes and sizes and were manufactured on an industrial scale and widely exported. The sigillata industries grew up in areas where there were existing traditions of pottery manufacture, and where the clay deposits proved suitable. The products of the Italian workshops are also known as ... moreArretine ware. And have been collected and admired since the Renaissance. The wares made in the factories are often referred to by English-speaking archaeologists as samian ware. Closely related pottery fabrics made in the North African and Eastern provinces of the Roman Empire are not usually referred to as terra sigillata. But by more specific names, e.g. All these types of pottery are significant for archaeologists: they can often be closely dated. And their distribution casts light on aspects of the ancient Roman economy. PLEASE WATCH MY OTHER ITEMS
