Complete second century A.D. Roman glass perfume bottle(or“unguentarium” which possesses a light iridescent burial patina with purple, pink, blue and green highlights. Most Roman glass vessels recovered complete(intact or repairable) are between 1½ and 3 inches in size– this one obviously exceeds the high end of this scale. However though complete, in a sense it is not intact. The glass perfume bottle was broken, whether in ancient times or perhaps when it was excavated, as there is a fairly clean break toward the bottom. The repair however seems to have been made with bitumen(tar) which would indicate that the repair was ancient. Some of the bitumen has been lost, so there is a small hole in the side of the bottle. But it appears to have been repaired and reused in ancient Rome– a rather uncommon find. Small jars. Pitchers, unguentariums, jugs, bottles, jars and flasks like this were used to contain aromatic oils, perfumes, medicinal ointments, and cosmetics. It is not to say that the Romans did not use larger pieces of glass on their tables such as bowls and cups; and even larger containers for transporting foodstuffs; because they did. An unguentarium is a small ceramic or glass bottle found frequently by archaeologists at Hellenistic and Roman sites. Especially in cemeteries. It's most common use was probably as a container for oil. Unguentaria were used as product packaging in commerce and for funerary practice. They are distributed throughout the Mediterranean region of the Roman Empire from Palestine to Spain, and north into Britain and Germania. Their manufacture was nearly as widespread.

Authentic Roman Glass Unguentarium 1st Century A.D. Intact
2nd half of 1st Century Roman glass bottle found frequently by archaeologists at Hellenistic and Roman sites. Especially in cemeteries. Its most common use was probably as a container for perfume or oil, though it is also suited for storing and dispensing liquid and powdered substances. In its funerary use it was said to collect the tears of a mourner and left at the grave. Also used as a dispenser in marketplaces. It has been suggested that products shipped in bulk containers were dispensed for sale in these smaller vessels. Perfumed oils. Ointments, balsam, jasmine, kohl, honey, mastic, incense, scent powders and cosmetic preparations are among the contents proposed by scholars or evidenced by archaeology. Ancient Roman Heavy Glass Unguentarium Bottle Flask - 2nd Century AD
An ancient Romano-Egyptian glass unguentarium. Dating to the 2nd- 3rd centuries AD. Cast glass. The colour an opal green, sitting upon a flat base with a short body, tall, cylindrical neck and flaring mouth. The container itself is limited to a short cylinder within the body of the heavy glass vessel, the inside walls displaying a beautiful range of turquoise to deep blue hues. Prior to the invention of glass-blowing in the first century BC. Casting glass was the only means of production. After glass-blowing emerged, the material became cheaper and more widely available, yet occasionally the use of casting persisted, as is evidenced in this vibrantly coloured piece. Rare Roman Glass Marbled Unguentarium CULTURE/ REGION OF ORIGIN: Roman Empire; Italy or Eastern Mediterranean. DATE: First half of the 1st Century AD DIMENSIONS: 10.2 cm(4 in. tall DESCRIPTION: Roman unguentarium of amber-yellow glass with opaque milk-white trailing that has been marvered flush with the vessel's surface. The vessel's body is spherical with a slightly concave flattened base without a pontil mark. A tubular neck tapering towards the top, and a rim that folds outward and has been rounded and thickened at the edge. From the base to the rim runs a white spiral trail that makes multiple revolutions and has been dragged up and down six or seven times to create a festoon pattern. The vessel has been expertly reassembled from a few large fragments; very stable and otherwise intact. PROVENANCE: Formerly in a Welsh private collection ... moreformed between the 1970s and 2008.
