Up for auction it a great black glass intaglio pendant depicting Hercules wrestling the Nemean Lion. Please read below the details of the myth. The Tassie style intaglio is set in marked(925) sterling silver bezel and includes the 20" sterling silver chain. The Pendant is about 1.25" tall excluding the loop and bail. The second photo is of a clay impression I made of the intaglio showing the amazing detail. The impression is not included in the sale. Happy bidding. The first of Hercules' twelve labours. Set by his cousin King Eurystheus. Was to slay the Nemean lion. Heracles and the Nemean lion( oinochoe. 520-500 BC, from Vulci) According to one version of the myth. The Nemean lion took women as hostages to its lair in a cave near Nemea, luring warriors from nearby towns to save the damsel in distress. After entering the cave, ... morethe warrior would see the woman(usually feigning injury) and rush to her side. Once he was close, the woman would turn into a lion and kill the warrior, devouring his remains and giving the bones to Hades. Hercules wandered the area until he came to the town of Cleonae. There he met a boy who said that if Hercules slew the Nemean lion and returned alive within thirty days. The town would sacrifice a lion to Zeus. But if he did not return within thirty days or he died, the boy would sacrifice himself to Zeus. Another version claims that he met Molorchos, a shepherd who had lost his son to the lion, saying that if he came back within thirty days, a ram would be sacrificed to Zeus. Up for your consideration is this handsomely framed TEN(10) White Plaster Medallions. They vary in size. As follows: 1- 2" x 2" 1- 2-3/8" x 2-3/8" 2- 1-11/16" x 1-11/16" 4- 1-3/8" x 1-3/8" and 2- 1-7/8" x 1-7/8" Since I've never had them out of the frame, I am going to guess that the thickness is from 1/2" to 3/4" thick. The over all dimensions of the frame is 19-11/16" long x 6-3/4" wide and 1" thick. Most of them are thicker on one side that the other. Almost arched. A Grand Tour souvenir. A rare collection of four plaster friezes. Early 19th century, after John Henning(1771-1851) of the reliefs from the Cellia of the Parthenon and the Phygalian Marbles. Plaques are signed and dated 1819/20 as shown. Frames measure 13 3/4 inches by 6 1/2 inches; plaques measure 9 1/4 inches by 2 1/4 inches. Wood frames, velvet and giltwood decorative liner.
