The South American Chinchorros performed elaborate mummification rituals for deceased members of every level and age of their society. The Chinchorros are exceptional for the sheer number of known mummies, nearly two hundred, and the variety and complexity of their mummification techniques. Although first discovered in 1917, the Chinchorro mummies are little known throughout the world and most literature about them is in Spanish. In"Beyond Death" Bernardo Arriaza brings to light these unprecedented remains, offers new interpretations of Chinchorro mortuary practices, and reconstructs this culture's daily life of 8,000 years ago. While this early South American society left no written record describing their customs and concept of death. The mummified remains provide clues to their culture. There were no shows, or any American furniture collections in museums. In the 1920's, Israel Sack moved to New York and started to amass first-rate furniture, and collectors who could afford it. Israel Sack was a brilliant marketer. He sponsored research[and] lectured widely. In the early part of this century, when American society was enamored of English antiques, he persuaded people to pay a premium for pieces made in America. You can tell American furniture by its accent, he liked to say. He argued that American furniture has its own qualities; instead of ornamentation and gilding, it has form, line, proportion, craftsmanship and rarity. He declared it an art form. Every article contained therein is positively genuine and guaranteed, a rather unusual state of affairs when one comes to deal with the great names of Thomas Chippendale, Hepplewhite and Sheraton. The public in general are so apt to attribute ... moreevery piece with a ball-and-claw foot to Chippendale, especially in chairs, and every piece having a bit of inlay to Sheraton, and to confuse the work of Hepplewhite with that of Chippendale, that when one comes to examine the collection made by Mr. Macy it is something of a shock to find that Chippendale has shown in his book of designs only one small hall chair with even a suggestion of a ball-and-claw foot, and that this design is not by any means characteristic of his work, but was also used by other makers of his day. Necessarily all of Sheratons pieces were not inlaid, any more than were the works of Hepplewhite and Thomas Chippendale himself. The matter of inlay was simply a matter of fashion, and we find all of the great furniture makers at the time using it. Mr. Macy has shown wonderful knowledge in assembling so vast a collection of the various domestic works of art of a bygone age, and it is doubtful whether there is a man with his catholic knowledge and ability among the present day connoisseurs in this line. Their connection with headmaster Frank Boyden and with the town of Deerfield itself led the Flynts to purchase their first property in the town in 1942. Soon they purchased four more properties, viewing their mission for the town as one of preservation and restoration, a mission that had expanded to include the entire village center of Deerfield. To furnish their houses they began purchasing antiques that often had some historical association with the property. In 1952, to assist their efforts, the Flynts formed the Heritage Foundation, which was renamed Historic Deerfield in 1971. Henry Flynt closely followed the foundation's activities. His involvement in Deerfield history led to his membership in the Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association, Deerfield's first historical association, serving as its president from 1949 until his death in 1970. Ceramics, figurines, paintings, etc. as well as some very nice pieces of early American formal furniture as well. What is really outstanding about this collection is the fine eye of the collector-the pieces are not just rare, but fine and interesting. Dr. Deyerle[1917-1994] described by Wendell Garrett in the introduction to this catalog as a"cultivated Virginia gentleman" was the descendant of 1730s Alsatian settlers in the Shenandoah Valley. In the 1950s he began to collect Pennsylvania-German pottery and ... morefrakturs, and soon branched out to furniture and other antiques from the New England and Atlantic states, but Virginia and the Pennsylvania-German areas were always his focus.
