WELCOME TO MY PAGE UP FOR AUCTION: ANTIQUE SILVERPLATE CHARGER PLATE BY MERIDEN BRTIANNIA COMPANY The featured item represents a plate or tray that measures approximately 10 1/2" in diameter. The piece appears to be silverplated but its possible to be made from German Silver. Also known as nickel silver. The plate features elegant embosses and etched design with leaves. Flowers, scrolls and other figures. The rim is decorated with geometrical and floral design as well. The back of the piece is stamped with"Meriden B. Company" in a circle surrounding an emblem made of shield with balance in the center. The numbers"301" and"10" are inscribed below. I believe those are the pattern number and the size. Brief history of the maker: In 1852 six or seven small Britannia ware plants in the town of Meriden were organized ... moreby Horace C. and Dennis C. Wilcox into the Meriden Britannia Co supplying Britannia. Albata and German silver ware, both plated and unplated, to many other firms.The Meriden Britannia Co. became part of International Silver in 1898, but some of their marks were used into the 1930's. We picked this up at an estate sale and as you can see in the photos. It does have some flaws. The plate does have some tarnish and scratches. It also has about a 6" long line of damage which we are not sure would clean up. And finally, there is some"gunk" on the back which also has a dent in the same spot. 24.5 LBS Copper Nickel Silver Soldered Scrap Norte Dame Stamped R. Wallace Bowls
This is for a lot of 16 bowls that weight about 24.5LBS. 16 bowls = about 24.5oz per bowl. They do vary. These were special made for Notre Dame and used for many years there. I was told by the catering staff they have been in storage for at least 30 years. They are really heavy. These bowls are made by stamping a rolled plate to a bowl shape. Then a cast oval ring is silvered soldered to the bowl. Then the bowl is silver plated. So if you following this metal comes from 4 sources; a rolled plate. A casting, the silver solder, and solder plating. The plate and casting are German silver about 20% nickel, 20% Zinc, 60% Copper. On one random piece I read the plate with a XRF Spectrometer gun and it looks to be all refined metal. I read on the edge where the plate is soldered to the casting. This part is showing a little gold, rhodium and iron. ... moreDon’t count on this, It’s just one random part from someone who has no experience using the gun. It’s still quite interesting! From a number of tests and sources there is at least 1% silver in these. I betting it’s more like 2% or more. Why 16 bowls? Because this is what fits into a medium flat rate Priority mail box.
