Comprising the entire North-West Section from the Original Plats of Squares& Subdivisions and Additions upon record in the office of the Surveyor of the City of Washington" Constructed under the direction of and published in 1892 by Griffith M. This beautifully crafted"ONE-CENT Z GRILL" exacted to the finest exquisite detail and measuring 11mm x 9mm, is one of the greatest stamps of the world and a wonderful collectors item or gift for a STAMP or SILVER enthusiast. During the years between 1860 and 1870, the US Post Office Department became quite concerned about the cleaning(removal of cancellations) and reuse of postage stamps. The" grill" was among the devices which materialized to curb the cleaning of stamps. Grills. Or embossing, were applied to certain US stamps by means of rollers either pitted with small depressions or covered with small raised pyramids. These rollers were machined in such ... morea way that when they were applied to a sheet of stamps, a certain area of each stamp was grilled. The idea behind the grilling was that the paper's fibres would break so that the cancelling ink would soak into the paper and cleaning would be impossible. Mauchline Pin Cushion depicting the United States Capital, Washington
This is a nice Mauchline Pin Cushion or Pin Disk with the transfer of the United States Capital. Washington. The transfer is crisp and clear, the piece maintains a lot of it's original luster. The wood pieces are in really nice shape. The back of the piece has a straight line going across the back as seen in the photo. The wood is not broke or cracked and you can not feel it when you run your fingernail across the surface. It is under the finish. The sides of the pin disk are covered in a blue material which does show age, but is still intact. I turned the pin and took photos of all areas of the edge. Really nice piece, one of the larger disks mauchline made for this purpose. I am parting with a portion of my Mauchline Collection.
