Description: Among the most scarce and decorative Dutch nautical charts of the American southeast. This is Johannis Van Keulen's and C. J. Vooght's 1687 maritime map of the Virginia, Carolina, Georgia and Florida coasts. Oriented to the west(with north to the right) this map covers from the entrance to the Chesapeake Bay southwards, along the eastern seaboard, as far as Cape Canaveral, Florida. Like most nautical charts, this map focuses on the coast line and offers limited inland data. The cartographer, C. J. Vooght, has based this map on various unpublished and unknown sources; however, he appears to reference the c. 1590 maps of John White ... moreand Jacques Le Moyne for place names in Virginia and Carolina, respectively. Spanish place names are used for several of the capes, no doubt referencing said'unknown' sources. The region between Cape Hatteras and the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay features numerous depth soundings. As this map was issued most of this region was disputed between the colonial powers of Spain, entrenched in St. Augustine Florida, and the English who had been slowly moving into the Ablemarle Sound and Cape Fear River region from their colony in Virginia. Carolina received its official grant from the British Crown in 1663– the southward expansion was not only a territorial expansion but a move that positioned the British colonies to more actively trade with the lucrative West Indies colonies. The southernmost British settlement at the time was Charleston, which appears on the west bank of the Ashley River(here called by the Spanish name, Rio Grande) in both the main map and the inset in the upper right quadrant. Insulae Americanae in Oceano Septentrionali cum Terris adiacentibus 52 cm x 38 cm copperplate engraving. 55 cm x 41 cm sheet size, contemporary hand colour, Amsterdam, 1635 We are pleased to offer this scarce example of the famous map of the Carribean(Burden#242) compiled and published by(1571-1638) Who after an apprenticeship in astronomy with Tycho Brahe established in Amsterdam the foremost cartographic firm of the 17th century. This map was included in many editions of Blaeu atlases published subsequently by Blaeu's son and successor(1599-1673) and this example is a fine early impression with no text on verso. Blaeu based the cartography in part on a 1631 chart by by Dutch East India Company principal cartographer(1580-1632) as well as his own West Indische Paskaert of 1630 and added a rich array of decorative elements making it one ... moreof the most sought-after 17th century maps of the region. The map presents three fine compass roses with radiating rhumb lines. Five ships and three fine cartouches including a rather bizarre menagerie in the title cartouche. Wonderfully decorative and historically important, this well preserved example will make an elegant presentation if matted and framed. We begin our survey of the map with the title cartouche presented by twin putti with a host of new world critters- note hanging turtle"pendant. Map names both Florida and Virginia. And Gerritsz is believed to have consulted some Spanish sources for the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. The map is notable for being the first printed map accurately portraying the distance between Chesapeake Bay and Albermarle Sound: Iguanas. Constrictors, vampire bats! Covers from roughly Michoacán Mexico, west to Surinam, north as far as modern day Virginia and south as far as modern day Ecuador. The cartography exhibited here almost certainly references the important 1698 map of North America attributed to Friar Hennepin. The mouth and course of the Mississippi River are displaced far to the west of their actual location and are shown roughly where Galveston Harbor and Sabine Lake are now. Roughly where the actual mouth of the Mississippi ... moreis located, this map suggests a large bay which it calls“Baye de Spirito Sancto” Florida is misshapen with no trace of the Keys. Further south, the West Indies are fairly well mapped suggesting a relative accurate picture of the islands. Following the lead of Bleau and Hondius, the mainland of Mexico and Central America is wildly exaggerated along the horizontal. Yucatan is also extremely misshapen. In the north, the lake of Apalache, which first appeared in Jacque Le Moyne’s early 17th century map of Florida, is shown as the source of the St. John’s River. In today’s Texas, this map notes several mines and Indian villages including a stylized typee. Expanding upon Hennapin’s work, Ruyter includes a number of bays in southwestern Florida and adds the Negrillos Islands. The fascinating allegorical title cartouche in the upper right quadrant of this map deserves special attention. In a departure from the traditional iconography for America, Indians, sheep, bears, buffalo, etc. there appears a unicorn killing a ram, an eagle, a couple of jack rabbits, and a naval fleet.
