1831 Thrall Pocket Map of Connecticut
1831 Thrall Pocket Map of Connecticut WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: Map of Connecticut from actual Survey. Description: An extremely scarce map. This is Willis Thrall's 1831 pocket map of Connecticut. Thrall's map, which is dated at bottom center, covers the entire state of Connecticut as well as the adjacent Long Island Sound. Connecticut is here divided into eight color coded counties. Inset plans of New Haven, Hartford, and the New England States, rest in the lower right quadrant. The upper right quadrant features a profile of the Farmington Canal. A list of Connecticut governors starting with John Winthrop of 1665, and updated to include John S. Peters of 1831, appears in the upper left quadrant. According to the Connecticut map historian Edmond Thompson, this map was first engraved by Daggert and ... moreissued between 1827 and 1829. This is the second edition, published in 1831 with an update to the list of governors and the names of Thrall and Ely added to the imprint. 1808 Buache Pocket Map of the World in Hemispheres
1808 Buache Pocket Map of the World in Hemispheres WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: Mappemonde a l'usage de l'Instr.on par Guillaume Delisle et Philippe Buache Premiers Geographes et de l'Academie des Sciences. Revue e Augmentee des Nles. Decouvertes par Dezauche en 1808. Description: An uncommon and appealing 1808 pocket map of the world in two hemispheres by Dezauche. This is a later revision. By Dezauche, of Guillaume de Lisle and Phillipe Buache's map of 1785. This popular map, which underwent numerous revisions and republications, chronicles the final years of the age of exploration. The present example, though dated 1808, offers a post-Cook pre-Vancouver world view. The northwestern coasts of America, the southeastern coasts Australia, and interiors of Africa, Asia, South America, North America, ... moreand Australia remain largely unknown. The tracks of Captain Cook's three historic voyages, as well as the site if his untimely death in Hawaii, are carefully depicted. Van Diemen's Land, or Tasmania, remains attached to the mainland of Australia. In the American Northwest much is unknown and confused. Vancouver Island does not appear and many of the inlets explored by Cook are wildly oversized– leaving open the possibility that they lead to a Northwest Passage. In Africa Lake Malawi appears in embryonic form and is suggestive of further lakes in the Rift Valley– the discovery of which would not follow until half a century later. One of this map's most interesting and curious elements it its inclusion of'Fousang des Chinois' in what is today British Columbia or Alaska. Fusang or Fousang is a region first documented by the Chinese Buddhist missionary Hui Shen in the 5th century. Hui Shen describes a land some 20,000 Chinese Li(c. 8000 km) east of the China coast. Fousang is described in considerable detail in the 7th century Book of Liang by Yao Silian. There are also accounts that the land was settled c. 220 BC by a Chinese Emperor of the Han Dynasty. In

1871 Bishop Pocket Map of Brooklyn, New York
1871 Bishop Pocket Map of Brooklyn. New York WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: Map of the City of Brooklyn. Description: An extremely example of William Bishop's 1871 pocket map of the city of Brooklyn. New York. In the mid-19th century, fueled by the advent of the steam ferry, which made crossing the East River practical, Kings County experienced a massive population burst. Wealthy and poor alike were quick to abandon the dirty and claustrophobic Manhattan for the suburban lands just across the East River. In 1855 the communities of Brooklyn, Greenpoint, Bushwick and Williamsburg were consolidated by the State of New York into one large city, modern day Brooklyn. It was around this time that the term“Kings County” began to fall out of popular usage in favor of“Brooklyn” By 1865, three years before this map ... morewas printed, Brooklyn had become the third largest city in America, following New York and Philadelphia. Here Brooklyn is revealed in the midst of this incredible development. Prospect Park, which was still being built, is shown, as is Greenwood cemetery. The street layout, mimicking the grid system of Manhattan, is shown in considerable detail. The map additionally attempts to identify important buildings, ferry crossings, bridges, train lines, and“plank roads. Also notes public buildings and lands such as the Lunatic Asylum, the Hospital, the Alms House, the Military Parade Grounds, the Marine Hospital and the Navy Yard. Manhattan appears in the lower left hand corner of the map. North is oriented to the lower left. The whole is surrounding by a decorative vine and leave border. This map was drawn by A. Brown of 47 Nassau Street, New York, for inclusion in William G. Bishops 1871 Manual of the City and Corporation of Brooklyn. Cartographically this map references and expands upon the 1846 map of Brooklyn surveyed and prepared by Richard Butt. Of note is the fact that this map, issued just years after Prospect Park's October 1867 completion, is one of the first maps to show

Which also has the map index sewn in. Copyright date of 1878 on the map. But dated 1882 under the scale of miles and presumably updated for this issue. However. As issued, the Minnesota map and index were tipped and sewn in a folder for Nebraska. This apparently didn't bother a former owner, whose name is lightly penciled at the top of the front folder cover. The correct folder would have resembled this on in all respects ... moreexcept for the State name. This is an original binding error- the original sewing on the index and blue on the map have clearly not been disturbed or altered. Index is 8pp with a rear endpaper that served as a guard over the map. It lists place names with their coordinates on the map. CONDITION: Fair to Good. Torn from the folder where tipped on without paper loss and with the tipped-on area adhering to the folder. Split along one fold 1.75" at bottom and with several small splits at the interstices of the folds. Slight uniform age yellowing. The paper is overall crisp. Please see the detail photos. This map would display nicely with some conservation. We use accepted bookseller's grading standards: Fine. Near Fine, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor. We grade items conservatively. Winfield T. Durbin Governor Indiana 1901 Pocket Bound Railroad Map Indiana
This auction is for a pocket book with a foldout railroad map for the state of Indiana. The binding is gold gilt stamped" Compliments of Winfield T. Durbin. Governor" This is in fairly poor shape overall. But has an interesting story behind it according to a google book result I found. While the work of several departments has been obstructed by cheese-paring methods. Governor Durbin has been liberal with'himself, as shown by his taking the Soldiers' Orphans' Home Band to Jeffersonville on one of his jaunts and trying to saddle the expense of entertaining it on the State Reformatory; or as is even more clearly manifest in his recent issue at an expense of $1,575 to the State, of a railroad map of Indiana, bound in full morocco, and inscribed in gilt letters'Compliments of Winfield T. Durbin, Governor. http:books.google.com/books?pg=PA765&lpg=PA765&dq="compliments%20of%20Winfield%20T.20Durbin"sig=SeKn2WompwS6PhIRBZVr0fY08Rk&ei=fEixS9-MHYOB8gbYqdjvAQ&ct=result&id=bHcUAAAAYAAJ&ots=ZfLUHEhMg4&output=text ... moreThe binding is intact. But has indents and wear. The inside foldout map is detached from the binding, and is splitting in multiple areas and is fragile. It has a makers name of" WM B. Burford" I could not unfold it completely. Because of space and the fact that I didnt want to tear it further. The inside cover has writing from a previous owner. Use the calculator below to determine shipping costs. All items insured. We will combine items for shipping if it is possible. 1884 Drew Pocket Map of Florida
1884 Drew Pocket Map of Florida WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: Drew's New Map of the State of Florida Showing the Townships by the U. S. Surveys. The Completed& Projected Railroads, the Diffferent Railroad Stations and Growing Railroad Towns. The New Towns on the Rivers and interior and the New Counties up to the Year 1884. Description: An extremely scarce and important map of Florida drawn by Horace Drew in 1884. This highly uncommon map. The earliest known example of which was issued in 1867, is considered to be the only pocket map of Florida actually printed in Florida. The first edition of this map was printed by Columbus Drew from his offices in Jacksonville Florida and subsequently updated in an unknown number of editions into the 1880s. This example was printed by Horace Drew, son and successor ... moreto Columbus. It reflects the rapid and hopeful development of Florida through the middle and late 19 century, with numerous railways, roads, and canals noted. Of particular note is the Lucie Canal, shown here leading from Lake Okeechobee to the Atlantic. This canal was part of a plan, supported by Drew, to drain the Everglades via a series of well placed water channels. Fortunately the Lucie canal was never built and the unique Everglades biosphere has been preserved for us to enjoy today. Also of interest is the extensive notation in the lower left quadrant regarding the Florida Land Survey. Even in the late 19th century much of Florida remained federally administrated Public Land. It was the work of the Florida Land Survey, upon which this map is based, to plat out the land for sale to settlers. Drew's notations explain the process and how do identify land available for purchase. Drew additionally notes the sites of various important battles during the Seminole Wars. Considered the Holy Grail of 19th century Florida cartography, this map is a must for any serious collection focusing on the American Southeast. Dated and copyrighted, Entered according to Act of Congress in t

Map measures C. 14" W x 19 1/2" H. Folio. Original fold lines as issued. 28820] note: All old sheets of printed paper possibly have short edge splits. Each sheet has existed for a very long time and has probably been handled repeatedly in the course of it's existence. It has a history unique to it as an object. Most of the time any edge splits are short. Minor, insignificant and have been closed- either long ago or more recently with small pieces of archival tape. Most often these splits are trivial and easy to overlook visually. Basically, they would not significantly affect the piece adversely. The item is offered as seen. Please look carefully and make your decision knowing this antique image is nice. But it is not in perfect"like new" condition. However, with whatever flaws it possesses, it remains entirely worthy of ownership and inclusion in any related collection. We feel it will prove very pleasing to its new owner. We stand behind everything we sell. Everything we offer is guaranteed to be an authentic original antique item as described. We do not sell modern reproductions. Please

1875 Colton Pocket Railroad Map of the United States
1875 Colton Pocket Railroad Map of the United States WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: Colton's New Railroad& County Map of the United States the Canadas. Description: An uncommon pocket map of the United States issued in 1875 by J. H Colton. This large map covers the most inhabited parts of the United States from Texas. Kansas, Nebraska and Dakota eastward to the Atlantic. Colton offers a wealth of cartographic detail including counties defined by color coding with elevation rendered by hachure. The map includes railroad lines, towns, cities, and notations regarding various American Indian nations. Colton's choice to terminate the map on the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains(106th meridian) is suggestive of the fact that this is, in essence, a railroad map and the transcontinental railroad had yet ... moreto be completed. An inset map in the lower right quadrant details the entire United States and offers more information regarding proposed railway lines extending to the Pacific. A further inset above the title details south Florida, identifying the then young city of Miami, though no railroad had yet extended into the region. The whole is surrounded by a wide decorative vine motif border. Colton first issued this map in 1860. Numerous reissues and updates followed including a dissected linen-backed British edition. The present example, 1875, is the latest example we have come across and among the scarcest of the series. Published by G. W. and C. B. Colton from their office at 172 William Street, New York City. Size: Printed area measures 33 inches high by 42.5 inches wide. Condition: Very good. Professionally flattened and backed with archival tissue.
