The Real Thing- on 1635 paper. Willem Janszoon Blaeu original1635 Map of Venice and the surrounding area of Italy, the "Dominio Veneto Nell'Itallia" Map, ... morea Hand-colored ENGRAVING created and published in 1640 in the "Geographia Blavaiana" Atlas by the famous Dutch master cartographer W J Blaeu. Original Old Paper. This early 17th Century item shows like a beautiful art piece. The engraving paper itself measures approx 18" x 23". It is early laid paper, canvas-backed under glass and was re-framed in a beautiful and valuable 22 1/2' x 27" Gilt-painted frame at some point in recent times. There is one repaired small tear on lower edge-center. A crease to the paper exists in lower left corner - apparently an actual original handmade paper imperfection.

Jansson Denmark Antique Map, kort Danmark excellent condition (Hondius Blaeu)
We are selling an original Johannes Jansson( Jansonius) Denmark Map circa 1670 and printed in Amsterdam- this map is nearly 350 years old and is not a copy. This is a very large decorative antique map with several nice decorative cartouches. Cherubs, Royal Danish coat of arms, stippling of the water shallows and a whole fleet of ships- many of the nice aspects of an antique map. This Kingdom of Denmark map is relatively rare and is entitled Totius IVTIAE Generalis Accurata Delineatio. The overall condition is very good to excellent. There are no worm holes. The center fold is fully intact but does have some slight cracking near the bottom which does not take away from the map appearance, the map impression is strong and the paper is in excellent condition with only slight browning over the ages. This map has been in our family and framed ... morewe believe for at least 100 years(it was hanging in an old family farm house in the 1930s) so we are certain the color is at least old if not original. The coloring is quite muted and nicely done without the modern bright colors. The map is approximately 24 1/4 inches by 19 1/2 inches(62 cm X 50 cm) and the map impression is 22 1/8 inches by 17 1/2(56 cm X 45 cm) The map is framed in a fine cherry one inch frame. Most of these maps have verso printing but the paper on this map is so strong that the verso is not showing through. 1635 BLAEU Map CARIBBEAN Virginia Florida Gulf of Mexico Ships! Reptiles! Putti!
Insulae Americanae in Oceano Septentrionali cum Terris adiacentibus 52 cm x 38 cm copperplate engraving. 55 cm x 41 cm sheet size, contemporary hand colour, Amsterdam, 1635 We are pleased to offer this scarce example of the famous map of the Carribean(Burden#242) compiled and published by(1571-1638) Who after an apprenticeship in astronomy with Tycho Brahe established in Amsterdam the foremost cartographic firm of the 17th century. This map was included in many editions of Blaeu atlases published subsequently by Blaeu's son and successor(1599-1673) and this example is a fine early impression with no text on verso. Blaeu based the cartography in part on a 1631 chart by by Dutch East India Company principal cartographer(1580-1632) as well as his own West Indische Paskaert of 1630 and added a rich array of decorative elements making it one ... moreof the most sought-after 17th century maps of the region. The map presents three fine compass roses with radiating rhumb lines. Five ships and three fine cartouches including a rather bizarre menagerie in the title cartouche. Wonderfully decorative and historically important, this well preserved example will make an elegant presentation if matted and framed. We begin our survey of the map with the title cartouche presented by twin putti with a host of new world critters- note hanging turtle"pendant. Map names both Florida and Virginia. And Gerritsz is believed to have consulted some Spanish sources for the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. The map is notable for being the first printed map accurately portraying the distance between Chesapeake Bay and Albermarle Sound: Iguanas. Constrictors, vampire bats! Note forked tongues: Turning to the map itself we find both Cape Canaveral and Tampa Bay named in Florida with somewhat distorted presentation of The Bahamas: To get a sense of map detail consider that the distance from Havana to Santiago de Cuba(S. Iago) as seen below measures just 8 cm actual size: Map is dedicated to the Dutch physician and mayor of Amsterdam(1593-1647)

Description: Striking and hight detailed copper engraved map of the chinese Nanjing province. A strapwork title cartouche is flanked by two men depicting the native dress of the region. The map has been published by Blaeu and it is based on the sources of Martino Martini. This map comes from the rare Spanish Edition of Blaeu's Atlas. Spanish text edition of the Atlas Major The atlas Major was printed only in small numbers. The Spanish text edition is extremely rare. The Spanish edition was never completed. When fire destroyed the Blaeu printing house at the Gravenstraat in Amsterdam in 1672, the final volume was in the press and consequently lost. The Atlas Maior is the epitome of decades of achievement by the Blaeu family. ... morePublished in five languages(Latin, Dutch, French, German and Spanish) from 1662, it grew to eleven or twelve volumes in its most comprehensive editions, and was as Koeman observes a"costly atlas. Exclusively designed for those members of the patriciate who could command both the material and intellectual resources that were needed to buy and appreciate it" Joan's father, Willem Blaeu, commenced publication of his new world atlas, the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, also referred to as the Atlas Novus, initially in two volumes, published in four languages. After succeeding his father, Joan Blaeu progressively expanded the Atlas Novus to six volumes by 1655, and this formed the first half the Atlas Maior. The rare Spanish edition of the Atlas Maior occupies an extraordinary place within the Blaeu epic. In contrast to the editions in other languages, its volumes were printed serially over fifteen years, printed in more limited quantity, bore different titles, and were not numbered. The genesis of this project came with the decision to produce the Spanish Atlas Nuevo, with the volume relating to Scotland first published in 1657, and that on China the following year. In 165

Rumours of the mythical Emperor Prestor John began in Europe around 1150AD. That somewhere in Asia there was a powerful Christian Emperor named Presbyter ... moreJohannes(with the court title of Gurkhan) who had founded the kingdom of Kara Khitai. He had broken the power of the Musselman in his own domain after a fierce and bloody fight. The mysterious Priest-King became a symbol of hope in the Christian world beset by Mongol hordes. Pope Alexander III resolved to make contact with Presbyter John, and his first step was to address a letter to him(dated 27th September 1177) The Pope's physician was dispatched to deliver the letter in person. He never returned. Pope Innocent IV was even more determined than his predecessor, and decided to convert the Barbarians instead of conquer them. Dominican and Franciscan missionaries as well as civil ambassadors of peace plodded back and forth between the Pope, the King of France and the Mogul Khan. These travelers soon learned that His Highness Presbyter Johannes and the Christian kingdom in deepest Asia were popular myths. But the popular fancy was not easily dispelled, and instead of allowing the bubble to be punctured, the people merely transferred the kingdom of Presbyter John to Africa- especially Abyssinia. No-one knew very much about Abyssinia. A few die hards like John de Plano Carpin
