Watermark: Arches(l.r. faintly seen in the photos) The Hondius family were one of the most notable in the great flowering of Dutch cartography at the turn of the 17th century. The father. Jodocus Hondius, was born in 1563 and he is noted for his work in association with many of the great cartographers and publishers of the time. Hondius grew up in Ghent, where he was apprenticed to an instrument and globe maker and engraver. He fled religious persecution in the Low Countries in 1584 to the safety of Queen Elizabeths London, but eventually settled in Amsterdam in 1593. Probably because of his time in London, he was chosen by John Speed to engrave the maps for his great atlas, The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britain, between 1605 and 1610. In 1604. Hondius bought the plates of the great Mercators atlas, which at the time was gradually being replaced as the cartographers bible by Abraham Orteliuss Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. To bring the collection up to date, Hondius added about 40 new maps before re-publishing, still under Merc

Pozzuola Pozzuoli Campania Mare Puteolanum Italy antique map by Hondius 1627
. Pozzuola Pozzuoli Campania Mare Puteolanum Italy antique map by Hondius 1627 Title: POZZUOLO Pozzuoli Province of Napoli. Region Campania, Italy. Mare Puteolanum Puteoli was an Italian city of Roman times on the coast of Campania. On the north shore of a bay running north from the Bay of Naples. The Roman colony there was established in 194 BC. Pozzuoli was the great emporium for the Alexandrian grain ships. The apostle Paul is traditionally supposed having landed here on his way to Rome. From which it was distant 170 miles. Here he would have tarried for seven days(Acts 28:13, 14) and with his companions began their journey, by the"Appian Way" to Rome. Puteoli was the location for a spectacular stunt(in 37 AD) by the eccentric Caligula. Who on becoming Emperor ordered a temporary floating bridge to built using ships as pontoons, ... morestretching for over two miles from the town to the famous neigboring resort of Baiae, across which he proceeded to ride his horse, in defiance of an astrologer's prediction that he had"no more chance of becoming Emperor than of riding a horse across the Gulf of Baiae" ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAP. No. Is the simple answer. Because we are dealing with historical pieces from a wide range of regions, creators and time periods, there is variation in the quality. However, we always ask ourselves if we would be pleased with a particular image framed and on display before we add it to our inventory. We do not carry low-quality"snapshots, cheap digital scans or multi-generational prints. When we create a large-format negative at the archive the resulting digital file can easily exceed one gigabyte. The detail is so good that the actual fibers in the paper or cloth of the original map are visible in the print we make.

Nicolas After Henricus Hondius Nicolas Berey. Paris, 1649. Map. Book Condition: Good. No Jacket. Early Edition. 24 By 17 Inches. A splendid and striking hand-coloured map after Hondius's world map of 1640. When originally purchased this map was in superb condition. Unfortunately after a period with a courier it reappeared with several splits and small holes. Fortunately the services of our paper restorer have brought it back to its former glory, though with one or two very small areas of loss to the image and with some evidence of previous closed tears. The whole has been laid down on archival silk. Good wide margin with some minor chips. The colours are fresh and bright and ... morethe whole map presents a highly decorative twin hemipshere image. A very impressive map with some subtle restoration. These maps combine Hondius' geographical outline with variant border decorations taken from Boisseau's map of 1636(Entry 340) Berey has omitted Boisseau's large textual banners but has retained his calendar(starting with 1637) the wind tables and the heavenly sphere. There are spelling errors in the title; Hydpographica' for'Hydrographica' and'Royne' for'Reyne' Shirley 354. Third state of this map with the date 1649. Mapmaker: Gerard Mercator(1512- 1594) is a seminal figure in the history of cartography. Mercator's calculations and map designs redefined the 16th century concept of cartography and were the first to break away from the Ptolemy model. Many of his systems of measurement. Such as the Mercator Projection, are still in use today. Despite his prominence as a cartographer, he started his career as a crafter of scientific instruments. He did not construct his first map until 1540, when he made two maps, one of Flanders and another of Palestine. These two impressive works earned him the patronage of the Emperor Charles V, for whom he construed a globe and several large scale maps. Despite this imperial patronage, Mercator was accused of heresy and in 1552 fled to Duisburg. In Duisburg he set himself up as a cartographer and began work on his revised edition of Ptolemy's Geographi
Antique Reprint Henricus Hondius 1661 Hemisphae Alis Co eli 20" x 18" Framed
Antique Reprint Henricus Hondius 1661 Hemisphae Alis Co eli 20" x 18" Framed. An absolutely lovely antique or at least vintage I believe reprint of Henricus Hondius 1661 Hemisphae Alis Co Eli Spheari Gra- RII BORE Etterrae Casceno Phia. The size of the chart or map(not sure of the proper term for this) is approximately 20" x 18" it is a little larger. I am measuring this by what is showing with the mat on. I bought this and another very similar one which I am also listing as these 2 would be great together as they are matted and framed the same. I took the chart out of the frame so that I could see exactly what I had. The chart is glued to a backing and there is some pencil writing on the other chart. You can view that other item in my listings. As these were owned by the same person and framed by the same framer I am ... moreassuming they are both of the same time period, and again, these are I believe reprints. They are still fantastic and would be wonderful in a home library or office. The wood on the frame is very heavy and I believe solid worm wood(little holes have been borned into the wood) I have not applied any oil or tried to touch up the frames, I am sure they would look much better after that is done. The wire on the back of this to hang this should be replaced as it is so old it has become brittle and did actually break apart, so I would restring this prior to hanging. Buyer does have the option of having the item removed from the frame and a reduced shipping fee- remember however that item is glued to a mat so the package would then be a still large 25 x 20. But thin package and of course would weigh much less. I can not give that shipping total prior to purchase however, because I would need a zip code or country and an exact weight. I am always fair with my customers. Framing company was John Nighland/ Pictures. Mirrors, Artists Materials/ 13 Midland Ave. Montclair. NJ/ Tel: Montclair 2-10140/ Price/ No. 2189.
