1588 (1614) Münster (Petri) Map EUROPE BY ORTELIUS Cosmographia Woodcut Version
Europa/ das ein Drittheil der Erden/ nach gelegenheit unserer zeit beschriebent 36 cm x 31 cm woodcut. 43 cm x 35 cm sheet size, modern hand colour, Sebastian Heinrich Petri, Basel, woodblock carved in 1588, printed 1614 We are pleased to offer this scarce original map of Europe from the 1614 edition of the Cosmographia of(1488-1552) Widely considered one of the most influential publications of the 16th century with 24 editions published over more than a century. The map is of course a close copy of the 1570 map of Europe by which served as the principal map of the continent for several decades. Remarkably. Despite being slightly smaller than the Ortelius copperplate map and being executed as a woodcut, the map includes a similar level of detail as the Ortelius map, a considerable achievement given the medium of the woodcut. Thus the map ... morepresents the cartographic curiosities of the mythical islands of"Brasil" and"Demar" while the seas are well populated with ships and sea monsters. Münster's magnum opus, the encyclopedic Cosmographia featured thousands of eclectic and vivid woodcut images: portraits. Town views, curiosities, monsters, scenes of everyday life as well as dramatic and sometimes horrific reconstructions of historic events. But it was also so successful because of its many woodcut maps, which as we shall see came to be something of a marketing challenge for Münster's eventual successor, the Basel-based publisher(1546-1627) In 1530 Münster married the widow of printer Adam Petri and the production of the Cosmographia was undertaken by her son Heinrich Petri. With demand for the book undiminished. His son Sebastian Heinrich had taken over the publication by the 1570s. However, with the advent of the magnificent copperplate engraved maps and atlases published by Ortelius and others the original woodcut maps of the Cosmographia dating back to the 1540s were in some cases erroneous and out of date. More importantly. Though, in comparison to the new copperplate map

Engraved area measures c. 4" W x 2 3/4" H. 24338] note: All old sheets of printed paper possibly have short edge splits. 1603 Ortelius Map SCOTLAND Scotiae Tabula "Sideways" Orientation FINE EXAMPLE!
Scotiae Tabula 47 cm x 35 cm copperplate engraving. 55 cm x 44 cm sheet size, modern hand colour, Antwerp, Jan Baptist Vrients, engraved 1573, printed 1603 We are pleased to offer this scarce original map of Scotland(Van der Krogt 5800:31) from the 1603 Latin edition of the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum of Abraham Ortelius(1527-1598) The first true atlas in the modern sense. Certainly one of the most sought-after printed maps of Scotland of all time. This western oriented"sideways" map is a true masterpiece of the engraver's art, here enhanced by superb hand colour work of the very highest order. Ortelius based the cartography largely on Mercator's 1564 eight-sheet wall map of the British Isles. But as a stand-alone map of Scotland this plate is in our view aesthetically unsurpassed and this exceptionally well preserved example ... morewill make an outstanding presentation if matted and framed. We begin our survey of the map with the magnificent strapwork title cartouche. Enhanced by a spouting sea monster at left: To get a sense of map detail consider that the distance from Edinburgh to Glasgow(west. But"up" in the map's orientation) as seen below measures just 5 cm actual size. Notations inform that Loch Ness never freezes and Loch Lomond is prone to"obnoxious tempests" and its fish have no bones: Note elegant calligraphy. Legend in Ireland naming the numbered islands within Loch Lomond: A handsome ship salis to the west. But"above" of the"Iles of Orknay" note pictorial Highland topography: STEIPEREIDUR. A most gentle and tame kind of whale, which for the defence of fishermen fights against other kinds of whales. It is forbidden by Proclamation that any man should kill or hurt this kind of Whale. It has a length of at least 100 cubits. The Latin text on verso is a fascinating document in and of itself and we offer representative excerpts below derived from the 1606 English edition published in London: The inhabitants having abundance of Barley whereof they make a

Map of Bavaria by A. Ortelius, 1574, Hand Colored
Map of Bavaria by A. Ortelius. 1574, Hand Colored Bavariae/Olim Vin:Deliciae/Delineati/Onis Com/Pendium Ex Tabula Philippi/Appiani Math This beautifully hand colored map shows the kingdom of Bavaria in southern Germany. In the lower left portion is the city of München(Munich) The capital of this kingdom. In the upper right are the blue& white checks associated with Bavaria. Lower down is a very complex& 3-dimensional-looking cartouche, at the bottom is a scale of German miles. A very significant map from Ortelius's famous hetarum Orbis Terrarum. This page measures 22" x 18" From Wikipedia: Abraham Ortelius( Abraham Ortels) 14 April 1527– 28 June 1598) was a Flemish cartographer and geographer. Generally recognized as the creator of the first modern atlas. The(Theatre of the World) He is also believed to be the first ... moreperson to imagine that the continents were joined together before drifting to their present positions. A note on hand coloring: The subject of the age and provenance of hand coloring when dealing with examples of incunabula and early printing is a recurrent and confusing one. At the time of the invention of printing by Gutenberg. Around 1453, all books were hand written and almost universally hand colored and decorated. Gutenberg’s first Bible was printed with the expectation that the first initials of paragraphs and the margins of the pages themselves would be hand colored with decorative and fanciful designs in the medieval style as all codices had been since the fall of the Western Roman Empire. Late medieval and Renaissance books were meant to be colored. A printing press. However, can produce black& white images far faster than colorists can color them. Many, if not most, books, therefore, were bought uncolored. In some cases these books were colored in the first few years of their existence. In many other cases they were colored by bookbinders when they were taken in for repair. A very significant number of 15 th and 16 th century books were colored in the late 17

1588 (1614) Münster (Petri) Map AFRICA BY ORTELIUS Cosmographia Woodcut Version
Africae Tabula Nova 35.5 cm x 31 cm woodcut. 43 cm x 35 cm sheet size, modern hand colour, Sebastian Heinrich Petri, Basel, woodblock carved in 1588, printed 1614 We are pleased to offer this scarce original map of Africa(Norwich#14) from the 1614 edition of the Cosmographia of(1488-1552) Widely considered one of the most influential publications of the 16th century with 24 editions published over more than a century. The map is of course a close copy of the 1570 map of Africa by which served as the principal European map of the continent for several decades. Remarkably. Despite being slightly smaller than the Ortelius copperplate map and being executed as a woodcut, the map includes a similar level of detail as the Ortelius map, a considerable achievement given the medium of the woodcut. Münster's magnum opus, the encyclopedic Cosmographia ... morefeatured thousands of eclectic and vivid woodcut images: portraits. Though, in comparison to the new copperplate maps and their ornate engraving work many of the old woodcut maps of the Cosmographia were truthfully rather crude in appearance. Accordingly. Petri had new wood blocks cut"in the copperplate style" complete wi

Japan, Arabia, Indonesia and a part of New Guinea and Australia. From west to east, this map offers numerous elements worthy of further study. The Caspian Sea, according ... moreto the convention of the time, is presented on an east-west rather than north-south axis. Arabia is projected in a distended form. Further east in western China, Cayamay lacus is depicted. This mythical body of water was postulated by Ortelius to be the source great rivers of Southeast Asia. Indeed. Ortelius crisscrosses East Asia with a vast network of waterways advocating his belief that a water route existed through China to the North Sea and hence, via the Northeast Passage, to Europe. Still further east Japan appears in a distorted top heavy projection that resembles a tadpole. To the south Luzon is absent from the Philippine Islands. In the extreme southeast portion of the map Australia appears as“Terrae Incognitae Australis” East of China, two sailing ships ply the waters of the Pacific In the lower left corner is a decorated cartouche. 1603 (1573) Ortelius WALES Cambriae Typus, Llwyd's "Deathbed Map", Decorative!
Cambriae Typus 50 cm x 37.5 cm copperplate engraving. 55 cm x 44 cm sheet size, modern hand colour, Antwerp, Jan Baptist Vrients, engraved 1573, printed 1603 We are pleased to offer this scarce original map of Wales(Van der Krogt 5500:31) from the 1603 Latin edition of the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum of Abraham Ortelius(1527-1598) The first true atlas in the modern sense. Notable as the first printed map to show Wales as a separate region, the map extends from Dublin and the Irish coast well past Liverpool and Bristol into England. Drawing upon the 1564 wall map of Gerard Mercator. The map was drawn in manuscript and sent to Ortelius by his friend the Welsh physician, philologist and humanist(Also spelled Lhuyd. 1527-1568) literally from his deathbed. In a poignant letter to Ortelius from 3 August 1568 Lhuyd wrote"before I returned home ... morefrom London I caught a most dangerous fever which has made me doubt of my recovery. But neither fever nor the prospect of death were able to efface the remembrance of my Ortelius from my troubled brain. I therefore send you my map of Wales. Not completed in all its details but faithfully drawn provided certain safeguards are observed, which I wrote down dying. Accept therefore the last remembrance of your Humphrey. From Denbigh in Gwynedd or North Wales. Tuus et Vivens et Moriens(yours in life and death) The result of this striking correspondence was this elegantly composed and scholarly map of Wales- one of the more interesting maps of the entire Theatrum. Wonderfully decorative with elegant calligraphy. A fine sea monster and a handsome ship, this well preserved example exhibits hand colour work of the very highest order and will make an outstanding presentation if matted and framed. A handsome title cartouche credits Llwyd as author of the map while a beautifully engraved ship(note detailed rigging) sails near the Lleyn(Lhyn) peninsula: A twin spouted sea monster swims off the coast near Abergwaun(Fishguard) note trilingual naming of the Irish Sea: To get a sense

He established a business in dealing with books and drawing maps. His first remarkable map was a 8 sheet world map in the year 1564, but only three copies have survived. In 1570 he issued the"Theatrum Orbis Terrarum" the first modern"Atlas" with uniformly sized maps in a systematic collection. The term"Atlas" was not used until Mercator introduced it 20 years later. Most of the maps in Theatrum have been engraved by Frans Hogenberg. At the time of publication, the atlas was the most expensive book ever printed. Nevertheless it was a big success and around 7000 copies have been printed until 1612 in many editions and six different languages. Beside the Theatrum, Ortelius compiled a series of historical maps and published it in the"Parergon Theatri" which was bound with the Theatrum from 1579 onwards or published separately. Original Ortelius Map of China ca 1608
Original Ortelius Map of China ca 1608 CHINAE. Olim Sinarum regionis, nova descriptio. auctore Ludovico Georgio. Original antique map of China by Abraham Ortelius; ca 1608. Superb old-coloured map of China from the 1608/1612 Italian edition of Abraham Ortelius’ landmark atlas“Theatrum Orbis Terrarum” the first modern atlas of the world. This map. Which was first included in the Ortelius atlas in 1584, is based on a manuscript map by Luis Jorge de Barbuda(Ludovicus Georgius) a Portugese Jesuit cartographer. Unusually oriented to the west, the region covered by the map includes China. Japan. Indo-China, Tartaria and the Philippines. The map. Which includes illustrations of wind wagons and Tartar encampments, also shows Great Wall China’s northern border. But its length has been significantly underestimated. A description of China appears on ... morethe verso in Italian. The map itself is in excellent condition but its margins have been restored with some very minor losses to the outside neat-line only; otherwise a superb. Beautifully old-coloured example. 36.5 cm x 47 cm. Should you require additional pictures or have any questions on the map. Please contact us. Specializing in original 16th and 17th century fine decorative engravings. Many more examples may be found on our website: www.mapsperhaps.com
1633 Jansson (Ortelius) Map POLAND Silesia Wroclaw Krakow Oder DECORATIVE Scarce
Silesiae Ducatus Nova et Accurata Descriptio 50 cm x 39 cm copperplate engraving. 55 cm x 47 cm sheet size, modern hand colour, Amsterdam, circa 1633 We are pleased to offer this scarce example of the finely engraved map of Silesia(Van der Krogt 2900:1B) published by Jan Jansson(1588-1664. Also known as Janssonius) Centred on(Breslau) The map covers much of what is now southern Poland extending to Krakow in the east and as far west as Prague and Frankfurt an der Oder. Jansson's father-in-law(1563-1612) purchased the map copperplates of the renowned Gerard Mercator(1512-1594) from Mercator's heirs and with those legendary maps as a foundation Hondius added maps of his own. A practice later continued by his sons and their brother-in-law Jansson that allowed the eventual publication of nearly 50 editions in multiple languages of the ... moreMercator-Hondius Atlas. Interestingly, this map does not have any text on verso and multiple inobtrusive vertical folds and two horizontal folds indicating that it was not printed for an atlas, but was likely intended for inclusion in a smaller volume where it had relevance. Jansson was not a true cartographer and typically published finely engraved maps that were close copies of earlier maps. This map is a case in point as it is a close copy of the 1570 map Silesiae Typus by Abraham Ortelius which in turn was based on the 1561 map of Silesia by Wroclaw based geographer Martin Helwig(1516-1574) Quite decorative. This well preserved example exhibits hand colour work of the highest order and will make an elegant presentation if matted and framed. We begin our survey of the map with the handsome title cartouche featuring the arms of Lower Silesia. The Kries Niederschlesien Wappen- note elegant"flourishes" of calligraphy: To get a sense of map detail consider that the distance from Breslau(Wroclaw) to Glogau(Glogow) as seen below measures just 9 cm actual size: Map extends as far east as Krakow- note mileage scale with decorative compass: Prague. 1603 Ortelius Map WANDERINGS OF ULYSSES +"Periplus" Map Middle East, Asia FINE
Erythraei Sive Rubri Maris Periplus& Ulyssis Errores 46 cm x 36 cm cm copperplate engraving. 56 x 44 cm sheet size, modern hand colour, Antwerp, engraved 1597, printed 1603 We are pleased to offer this scarce original four-part map from the 1603 Latin edition of the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum of Abraham Ortelius(1527-1598) The first true atlas in the modern sense. This example of"historical cartography" was presented in the Parergon section of the Theatrum. Where Ortelius notes that his historical maps"are published separately from the Theatrum. Where places are shown as they are in the present day" and that he"includes them as a supplement at the instigation of friends. No matter the self-effacing introduction, it is evident that Ortelius put far more personal effort into the maps of the Parergon than the"present ... moreday" maps of the Theatrum which in most cases were entirely composed by other cartographers. In the richly detailed historical maps of the Parergon. Ortelius was able to employ his vast scholarship and deep appreciation of the classical world into extraordinary cartographic presentations of places, events and stories of"the ancients" as they were understood in the Renaissance. One of the most unusual of Ortelius maps, the principal map is based on the circa 1st century A.D. Periplus of the Erythraean Sea and charts the northwest coast of Africa. The Arabian Sea, India and the Bay of Bengal with a barely recognizable Malaysian Peninsula and Sumatra- all as it was known to the ancient world around the first century of the Common Era. Twin circular inset maps chart the cities founded by the Carthaginian explorer on the African coast beyond the Strait of Gibraltar and the north polar region with a speculative polar continent. Finally. A beautifully engraved and richly detailed inset map charts the wanderings of Ulysses(Odysseus) in the Mediterranean from Homer's Odyssey. Beautifully engraved with flamboyant calligraphy and charming decorative elements. This
1612 Original Ortelius Map - Limania, Auvergne - France
1612 Ortelius Map- Limania Abraham Ortelius. Along with his contemporary Gerard Mercator, was the greatest name in early mapmaking. While Mercator was the first person to use the term'Atlas' to describe a collection of uniformly sized maps, Ortelius was the first to actually publish one. This was his'Theatrum Orbis Terrarum' of 1570 and it was so successful that smaller versions were immediately called for. Philip Galle was the first to produce an'epitome' or miniature version, in 1577 but others followed including the Arsenius brothers. This map is from the 1612 Italian Arsenius edition published as Compendio del Theatro. This fine map of Auvergne has very good detail showing many towns and cities such as Clermont. Monferrau, Beauregart, Beaumont; the map has very attractive illustrative detail to the Allier river, ... morelakes, woods, and mountains, and there is a nice cartouche title and a scale of distance. The map measures 4.5" by 3" Has wash hand colouring, and is in good condition. The map is guaranteed to be over 390 years old. Shipping United States- Regular airmail $5.00US.
