BELLIN was the official engraver to the Marine at the time and produced a number of the maps published in L'HISTOIRE. Possibly the most accurate map of the region at the time it shows scores of settlements. Forts, and Indian Villages along the coast and inland of what is now the Southeast from the Atlantic Coast to west Texas. A number of Indian Tribes are named as well including the APACHES, CHICACHAS, TCHATAS, and CHERAQUIS. Note from the photos that the date 1757 is printed in the legend. Map 69) This atlas came out from 1804-1893, with constant revisions and new maps added, such as this one. The present map subsequently appeared in the atlas with revisions in 1849, 1851, 1852, 1853, 1855(and possibly other years) Rumsey 2077:63. Subsequent editions of this map that appeared in Weiland’s atlas indicate the rapid changes that occurred in the Western United States as a result of the Mexican-American War, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, the California Gold Rush, the Gadsden Purchase, and the creation of new territories and states. The key at left traces the various boundary changes, beginning with the Adam-Onís Treaty. Wheat notes that Kiepert based his map of the Western regions on Frémont and cites the 1851 edition of the present map. Kiepert’s rendering of Texas and its then-disputed boundary walks a line of circumspect neutrality. Kiepert shows two blue outlined boundaries. Since the railroads are clearly shown and named on this wonderful large map, we have listed it in both ebay categories. This period map of Texas has a copyright date. Lower left corner of 1898. It is from the 1899 Rand McNally Enlarged Indexed Atlas, United States, volume, published in a two volume set, Foreign& United States) The map measures 28 X 20 inches. Through worldcat.org we were able to locate not more than five editions of this atlas in the major libraries. Universities, historical societies, etc. who had these listed as being in their collections, sometimes they are listed by missing when pressed to show them! The most promising examples were at Harvard University. The David Rumsey map collection on the web, has one similar, but different ... morecopyright dates. He sells copies. How many remain in public hands. In attic's, basements, old buildings, unknown to the collecting public) and will later come on the market via, auctions, flea market sales, or ebay is unknown. We would hazard a guess that not too many would still exist. The paper it was printed on is very loose fiber and cheap and low cost by today's standards. All these factors, along with size that would receive damage by mere handling. Large scale maps are notorious for tears when pages are turned. Would look fantastic framed under glass. Original 1851 Craven Lighthouse Survey Map ARANSAS PASS Mustang Island Texas Original antique lithographed United States Coast Survey map of Aransas Pass on the coast of Texas. Printed more than 161 years ago. The image area measures 19 x 20.5 cm[7-1/2" x 8-1/8" And the map is drawn on a scale of 1:30,000. It shows soundings, gives sailing directions for approaching mariners, and locates the proposed site for a lightship, along with the notation: Lighthouse is not recommended. The survey had been under the command of Lieutenant Tunis Augustus Macdonough Craven after Congress had authorized the placement of a lighthouse at the pass. Which leads to the port of Corpus Christi, located twenty miles or so to the west. Craven's recommendation. However, was that a lightship be used to mark the pass, as noted on this map. Two years ... morelater a second survey reversed Craven's recommendation, and a lighthouse was built at the pass in 1857. The scans below give a closer look at this map: During the Civil War. Lieutenant Craven was promoted to Commander, United States Navy. He died aboard the Tecumseh in the Battle of Mobile Bay. 1864, his brave sacrifice immortalized in verse by English poet Henry Newbolt. This is an original. Authentic U.S. Coast Survey document, not a reproduction or modern reprint. And it is fully guaranteed to be genuine. It is titled Sketch I No. 5 Aransas Pass. Published in the Atlas Universal(title is in the upper left margin) Published in Paris, 1842, the map was designed by Victor Levasseur as stated in the bottom left margin; the artwork was drawn by Raymond Bonheur, as stated in the bottom right margin; and, the publishing details are stated in the bottom center. Note this is the earlier version from the Atlas Universal, published approximately from 1840-1845. After which it the same map was then included in the Atlas Nacionale Illustre.de la France bearing that title in the upper left after 1845. This map came to us with a date of 1842 ... moreand bears the Atlas Universal title clearly placing its publication during the period of the Texas Republic prior to statehood on Dec. 29. 1845. The map also shows British Columbia as part of the US prior to the 54 40' dispute that was finally resolved in 1846. The geography of Alaska is still not well understood and the Arctic shows the Northwest Passage. Its existence also still not well understood at the time. It is not matted nor framed being sold as a single sheet as shown in the main pic. It is truly one of the most decorative North America maps of the era that is often sought by collectors due to the depiction of the Republic of Texas, being sold here with original handcolor outlining and uncolored engraved views as was originally issued. Size: The map image measures approximately 11 by 17 inches on a 14 by 21" 31x44cm) page with a margin all around for framing. Condition: The map is in Good condition with original hand color.
