Description: This scarce map by Giambattista Albrizzi is a curious and somewhat retrogressive 1740 Italian variant on Delisle's 1718 map of Texas. Louisiana, Florida, and the southeastern British coastal colonies. Roughly following the topical model as laid down by Ortelius in 1584, this map is centered on the Mississippi River and covers from the Rocky Mountains to the Atlantic and from the latitude of Philadelphia to Panuco(Mexico) and the Bahamas. Many of the cartographic elements here are curiously antiquated having been updated by Delisle in his 1718 map- suggesting that Albrizzi must have either had an earlier variant of Delisle's map ... morein hand when this map was composed or, more likely, chose to'update' the Delisle map with other outdated sources. One such example is the curious half-moon shaped lake at the northern terminus of the Apalachicola River. This lake appeared in some early French maps but by 1740 had largely been abandoned as unlikely by most cartographers. This is also one of the last published maps to incorporate John Lederer's c. 1670 nomenclature in Carolina- including the'Deserto Akenatzy' the'Pinnura cooperta d'acqua' and the'Lago Grand' a vestigial variant on the apocryphal'Great Lake of the American Southeast' Throughout the map cities and fortifications are rendered pictorially in the early 18th century European fashion. This is an 1871 engraved map of Texas. New Mexico& Indian Territory, with insets of the environs of New Orleans& Chicago. It measures 12.5 X 17 inches. Published by T. Edward Zell. Philadelphia. Map was engraved by J. Bartholomew. For history of the famous Bartholomew maps, see last paragraph below. We are unable to find many of these maps in the major dealers sites. The ones we did find had prices of $200- $500 and up and were not in as good a condition as this map. Be my guest. Go look for yourself. Paper shows minor age spots. Normal on most maps this age due to paper content. We have shown in the scans of the map and close ups to get a great idea of the beauty of the gentle hand coloring and detailed engraving. This is one of Kitchin's most famous maps as identified in Tooley's Dictionary of Map Makers. Tecas" and Texas are shown with settlements at Cenis and Presidio. This is your chance to own a map that can be the centerpiece of your collection. Cartographer: Rigobert Bonne(1727-1795) was one of the most important cartographers of the late 18th century. In 1773 he succeeded Jacques Bellin as Royal Cartographer to France in the office of the Hydrographer at the Depôt de la Marine. Working in his official capacity Bonne compiled some of the most detailed and accurate maps of the period. Bonne's work represents an important ... morestep in the evolution of the cartographic ideology away from the decorative work of the 17th and early 18th century towards a more detail oriented and practical aesthetic. With regard to the rendering of terrain Bonne maps bear many stylistic similarities to those of his predecessor. Bellin. 1847 Western Territories Map, D. F. Robinson, Texas stovepipe to Wyoming
1847"Western Territories of the United States" by D. F. Robinson. Copyrighted 1847 and believed to be the first in this series with the tall Texas stovepipe going all the way through Colorado into south central Wyoming. Territories. States and areas shown in full or partial are: Texas, Nebraska, Indian Ter. Iowa, Dacotahs, Upper California and Oregon. Colorado is part of Texas, Nebraska, and Upper California. Area covered but not named includes Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma, Nevada, Arizona, North Dakota, South Dakota, Washington, Idaho and Minnesota. Map size is about 11 by 17 inches and richly colored. Map in vey good shape. Staining along the fold as is usual for this map. Two spots from the same debris along the bottom edge. Dirty or smudges along the edges of the sheet. Archival tape repair to the reverse at ... morethe top half of the center fold. Bleed through on the reverse from Nebraska coloring. The hand wash coloring is very good and the map is very clean for this map with the notations above. Map illustrates the understanding of the topography of the West just as some of the first military/topography explorations had been completed. An 1848 version of this map is also being offered at the same time. Map will be rolled in thick Mylar plastic and placed in a tube/box for shipping with the seller paying for insurance and tracking. 1858"Map Exhibiting the Lines of March Passed over by the Troops of the United States during the year ending June 30th. 1858. Prepared by order of the Hon. J. B. Floyd, Sec. War. War Dept. Office Expl. Survey Nov. 1858. Map from the Senate Ex Doc No 1 and House Ex Doc No 2 of the 2nd Session of the 35th Congress. The map is about 17 by 18 inches. The troop explorations shown include many in Texas. The Rocky Mountains, Florida, and the West Coast. Routes to and from the east coast are included. The condition is normal for this map and includes browning along the fold lines which is typical for this map for some reason. There are miss-folds. Especially in the middle. There are two old tape repairs to the back, one affecting the front of the map below and to the right of the title box area. The whole map has subsequently been backed by ... morean archival sheet of thin archival tape as can best be seen in the lower left corner where it extends just beyond the ragged edge of the map sheet. 1865 UNITED STATES TEXAS WESTERN INDIAN TERRITORIES Map JOHNSON ATLAS CIVIL WAR
An ORIGINAL antique 1865 map of The UNITED STATES from JOHNSON'S New Illustrated FAMILY ATLAS. This rare and interesting map published during the last year of the CIVIL WAR shows the States and Territories of the UNITED STATES individually hand water colored. A number of railroad routes are shown in the eastern half of the country while 4 proposed TRANSCONTINENTAL RAILROAD routes cross the West. The Northern Pacific, the Central Pacific, The Union Pacific, and the Southern Pacific. In addition other famous routes are marked including the PONY EXPRESS ROUTE, the SANTA FE TRAIL, and the 1843-44 exploration route of John C. Fremont. Many of the Western Territories were quite different from the States today. The map shows a HUGE DAKOTA TERRITORY which included all of NORTH and SOUTH DAKOTA and nearly all of modern WYOMING. MONTANA had just ... morebeen carved out of an even LARGER IDAHO TERRITORY in 1864. The new state of NEVADA was smaller than today. The UTAH territory was larger than the modern state is today and the area around LAS VEGAS was part of the ARIZONA TERRITORY at the time. In TEXAS the locations of over 20 forts are shown and a number of INDIAN TRIBAL LANDS are located on the map in the upper Great Plains. Oklahoma was known as the INDIAN TERRITORY at the time. This is a RARE and interesting map with a HUGE amount of detail on it. Among the finest maps produced during the 19th Century. Johnson's maps were used extensively during the Civil War. The map measures 26 by 18 inches and is perfect for matting and framing. This ORIGINAL antique map is guaranteed over 145 years old, published during the last year of the CIVIL WAR. There is an 1864 copyright date printed along the lower border but the map in fact originates from an 1865 dated atlas. I do not sell reproductions, just honest maps at honest prices.
