Ca. 1898 Map of Texas Copyright 1898 Map Size: 26" X 19" Page Size: 29" X 22" Condition: VERY GOOD- overall light age toning- crease at fold. Comments: A large and highly detailed map that is an excellent candidate for matting and framing. On the reverse side is a list of all the cities. Towns and counties with population when available. Note the size of the map. There is greater detail than what is found on smaller maps. General Information: Seldom available and relatively rare. I am pleased to offer these C. 1890's individual maps salvaged from a Rand McNally& Co.s Atlas(elephant folio) Each map is copyrighted with a year in the 1890's and some a little earlier. All the maps are printed on heavy paper; they are aquatinted and display much more detail than smaller maps. Any relevant faults such as foxing, ... moretears, holes or stains are disclosed if they affect the map area and are visually detracting. You will note that these maps are very larger and at least double the size of most other maps available. Rand McNally published a number of smaller-sized atlases, some with a similar name and same year, so in comparing, pay particular attention to the map size. The larger maps have more detail and additional description. These maps were tipped into the atlas and therefore contain no staple marks. Most of the maps are double-page and therefore have a crease down the center and the tipping strip on the reverse. The crease may be professionally pressed out. But the crease mark will never completely disappear. It should also be expected that the page edges will show some minor wear but the wear will not be noticeable after being matted and framed. The overall condition of these 100+ year old maps is very good but they all show age toning as the result of being exposed to air and more specifically moisture in the air. The paper is not so much white as a light cream tone which tends to deepen closer to the edge. There may be sporadic foxing which is noted if in the area of the map. There are n

Original, steel-engraved, 6-sheet Map of World on a gnomonic projection, by the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge(SDUK) published as part of the Society's Atlas in 1844, in London, by Chapman and Hall. The SDUK began its map publishing project under the leadership of Captain Francis Beaufort R.N. in 1829, and published the maps in parts, haltingly, over the next 15 years, completing the series in 1844, finally permitting the publication of a whole atlas. Many of the maps were actually drawn by Beaufort, who at the time was the Hydrographer to the Royal Navy, and all were closely supervised by him. J. C. Walker worked closely with Beaufort in engraving the maps. Finely engraved, and carefully researched, the maps set a standard of excellence for commercial map-makers in England for decades to come. The map shows a much different set of Western US boundaries with a square NW Missouri, Oklahoma as part of a large Arkansas, Iowa Minnesota Dakotas all part of a large Missouri and Huron Territory, large Washington, Oregon and Utah Territories. Texas includes parts of Eastern New Mexico labeled as Santa Fe, Western Oklahoma and Colorado which only existed for a few years prior to the Compromise of 1850, when the Texas border with New Mexico was settled. The southwestern US border is the Gila River prior to the Gadsden Purchase of 1854. Alaska is part of Russia and the Canadian provinces are much different than today including Ontario as Upper Canada and Quebec as Lower Canada.
