Rare Vintage 1940's 12" Rand Mcnally Indexed Terrestrial Art Globe
Up for bid is a rare 1940 12" Rand McNally Indexed Terrestrial Art Globe" This is a beautiful and interesting old globe which shows ships from the past including Viking vessels. Sailboats, and frigates. The cartouche Is shaped like a shell, surrounding by a mermaid and Poseidon. This globe shows the world as it was during the early stages of World War II. On the globe it shows a large Germany with no Austria or Czechoslovakia, Italian East Africa with no Ethiopia, The Japanese puppet state of Manchukuo, Korea labeled as Chosen and occupied by Japan, and an independent Tibet. It also shows the nation of"Tannu Tuva" between Mongolia and the USSR Even though it was not recognized as independent by anyone other than Mongolia and the USSR. This globe is in alright condition for its age though it's not perfect. The base ... morehas some corrosion on it. The globe has scratches and scuffs on it, Some of the original tape around the equator is coming up, and the globe is slightly coming open in Columbia. All in all, nothing major or anything too hard to restore. Surprisingly for it's age, the globe still spins good on its axis unlike others I've seen where the meridian had punched a hole in the axis. There is currently another identical globe(except for a slightly fancier base and near perfect condition) on sale on the Internet for $495. If you have any questions feel free to ask. Made in the period 1918- 1919 from“Publishing house of books and textbooks Hristo Danov, Plovdiv” Cartographic factory Freytag and Berndt- Vienna. Of the history is know that. Immediately after the Liberation of Bulgaria from Ottoman rule, Hristo Danov with the support of the Russian Knjaz Cherkassky, managed to bring his old dream to life- he transferred his own printing-house from Vienna and re-opened it in Plovdiv as"Publishing house of books and textbooks Hristo Danov" After his death, the work of Hristo Danov continues his sons. Up for bid is this rare 1945 Rand McNally Indexed Terrestrial Art Globe. The globe itself. Though amazing, isnt what makes this piece unique, its the fact that it has the original wooden stand and the original atlas too boot! The description states all the problems with the globe and counterparts. I called a globe expert who has one of similar build from 1949 missing the book that they are selling for approx $400 so if that gives you any idea on the value of this one with the original book. I would love to keep the piece but the fiance says that I need to"stop buying crap" which I really love to do) so it has to go. I will be shipping in two seperate boxes to preserve the globe and make sure that no harm comes to it. Cram's 10 1/2" Universal Terrestrial Globe from 1930's in good shape
Old globes are fascinating with those historical snapshots of our civilization at some particular point in time. Here is the Cram's 10 1/2" Universal Terrestrial Globe from the late 1930's just before the outbreak of World War II. Confirmed by Germany's annexation of Austria, and Japan's occupation of Manchuria, shown here as Manchoukou. Note that Israel has yet to exist, that the India/Pakistan split has not occurred, that Africa and southeast Asia include most of the colonial names of the early 20th century, and that Ethiopia has been absorbed into Italian East Africa. The globe has other intriguing detail. Such as the shortwave radio station callsigns around the world, distances from point to point, and the analemma in the Pacific. Overall. The globe is in good condition though with quite a few wear spots such as marks ... moreand scrapes, some significant, such as at French West Africa. The equatorial band is partly gone, and some corrosion is seen at the north timezone disk. Please examine the photos carefully. The metal base is clean and solid. The globe has a dent that measures 1-3/4" by 1" near the north pole and another smaller dent near the south pole, some flecks of print missing in a few places. It measures on the stand 20 inches tall and is a 12 inch globe. The clawfoot base that it rotates on is a cast copper finish. This can be restored and would make a nice display in an office or den. And it's their 10 1/2 inch terrestrial globe. It is one of the best in their production and not the easiest to find. Still showing Italian East Africa, along with French Indochina. Not Vietnam. It has a wonderful color. Slightly faded, not to bright, with a bit of wear on the surface, which I have tried to show in the pictures. This is the patina that I strive to find and collect. Handsome highly detailed surface with oceans finished in blue green with International Date Line, ecliptic and large analemma with note of explanation. Nautical distances shown with small ships, transatlantic routes shown with ocean liners, also Indian Ocean coastal routes. Shows Great Chinese Wall with some topography. It can be dated to circa 1936 as Persia has become Iran(1935) but Italian Somaliland is not yet part of Italian East Africa(1936) and Burma is still shown ... moreas part of India(until 1937) Shows the Saar region in Europe. Which voted in 1935 to return to Germany, an independent Austria and intact Czechoslovakia. In Asia. 1871 Joslin Globe in excellent shape with a few scuffs. Minimal discoloration, and two tiny scratches( last picture) Equatorial tape 100% intact. The terrestrial globe is mounted within a calibrated brass half meridian, raised on a turned ebonized wooden stand with central baluster standard and dish base. North and South Dakota are one state,Oklahoma is shown as Indian Territory with names of various tribes; the western extension of Oklahoma is shaded pink, the remainder is shaded blue. There are also a figure-eight analemma and printed polar hour circles. Other noteworthy points are as follows, Hawaii is Sandwich Isles, Canada Is British America, India is Hindostan, Algeria is Barbary. Here's a great old paper covered terrestrial globe. Made by W& AK Johnston and distributed by A J Nystrom. Probably dates from the 1910s through 1920's. Measures 12" wide(globe only without ring) and has a cast iron ring. The globe is paper over tin. The condition is good for the age with one 2" dent on South America(will add photo) and some paper finish wear. No damage to cast iron. This was probably a table or floor model globe but is missing its cast iron base. A great opportunity to bring 2 lost pieces together and create a very valuable globe. A fellow Ebayer questioned whether this was actually a"suspension globe" that was designed to be suspended by a pulley and rope- another rare piece. No international shipping.

An amazing piece of history. A Hammond's 12 in. Terrestrial Globe in an Atlas Stand Circa 1930. Very interesting to see how the world was divided back then. Globe shows"Principal steamship routes in Nautical Miles. Principal Transcontinental Railways" Made by CS Hammond Company in Brooklyn. Date is not marked anywhere. But it must predate 1935 as Iran is still called Persia. The worst sign of wear is pictured where the globe has sat too low in the stand and was spun anyway, so there is a wear line all the way around. However, it cannot be seen unless you get below the globe and look up. Other that that there is a small spot or two and a little bit of brown stain that could be taken off, but I am not going to try and possibly ruin the finish. Very Nice look has a few issues but is in good condition other wise. This is a cram Unrivaled Terrestrial Globe in 12" diameter. There are two major tears in the globe both over water and not over land areas. Globe can be removed from the stand and rotated to any position on both axis. I.E. The south pole can be moved to the top and the north to the bottom. It has some dirt on it that may clean off I have not tried did not want to damage it further using the wrong type of cleaner. Antique globe terrestrial by J Forest Paris late 1800's on brass & wooden stand
I have for sale an original terrestrial globe by makers J Forest of 17 Rue de Buci Paris dating from the latter part of the 19th Century. It is in pretty good condition a couple of flaws as detailed above but this is a item which was meant to be used. So therefore some sign of use is to be expected. But Ethiopia is still shown on the globe, and Burma is not shown separated from India I did not clean the globe. There are 8 or 9 lines that are an inch or so long and almost look like hairline cracks on a vase(have arrows point to a few in the pics) otherwise it appears to be in nice condition for it's age.
