c1935 Replogle 10" Black Seas World Terrestrial Globe - cool metal base-Pre WWII
This is a rare black seas 10 inch world globe made by Replogle Globes. Chicago Ill. It’s in very good condition with just some very minor paper loss about 2 ½” x 1/8” around part of the Equator. Overall. The colors are vibrant and crisp. It sits on a nicely shaped metal base(maybe aluminum? and has a full metal ring around the globe. I estimate this globe to be mid 1930s. It shows Machoukuo and Arabia rather than Saudi Arabia– but has Istanbul and Iran. It still shows Ethopia and Somaliland as separate countries. I’ll be listing several globes from my personal collection. So please keep watching. Please note that I sometimes travel. So shipping might be delayed by a few days from when you purchase something. Description: Rare circa 1920's or earlier. 12" terrestrial world globe cast iron full ring meridian in an adjustable cast iron cradle on raised tripod cast iron base with paw feet and rare moving hanging hooks. I believe this globe was made by W. A.K. Johnston, Limited geographers, engravers, printers. A.J. Nystrom& Co. sole United States agents. Chicago as I could only find an 8" example with same ring, cradle and base. I could not find another example with the hanging hooks but did find a later model with a similar hang section. This one was designed so you could remove the thumb screw holding cradle to base and hang the globe and still move the meridian by sliding it in clamping system on hooks and have pointer on hanger to locate areas. Obviously missing the globe but the center wood or axis wood still in place and both the South Pole metal cap and North Pole metal time dial are still present. The paw foot base has one old chip in the casting on an inside edge as can be seen in one of my photos. No other problems, cracks, chips or repairs to this fabulous unit. The circular horizon band with paper calendar and zodiac, raised on a turned hardwood stand with four legs joined by a cross stretcher. This handsome stand is the style of English Georgian globes of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Geographic entities are in shades of yellow, green, orange and tan with darker outlines. Oceans are greenish blue and ocean currents are indicated by light yellow wavy lines. This globe shows present-day St. Petersburg. Russia, as"Leningrad; therefore, it was made after 1924. Selling here is a superb original 12 inch terrestrial globe made by George Philip and Son of London dating to c. 1929. The globe is formed of printed paper gores. The whole supported on a turned ebonised stand, characteristic of the period. Philips were originally founded in Liverpool in 1834, the company later moving to London where they establised the London Geographical Institute. Features on this globe. Istanbul is marked as Constantinople implying a date before 1930 when this transition occured. Peking however is featured. As opposed to the earlier name of Peiping, a change that occured in 1928. Iran is marked as Persia. A change that occured in 1935. Thailand is marked as Siam. Countries such as Zaire and Mali did not exist at this point. The whole region was known as French West Africa. I have up for sale a wonderful vintage circa 1940s GEORGE F CRAM Cram's Unrivaled 12" Terrestrial Globe. Unusual Coloring- the oceans are in a gold color. It has a wood base as is very eye appealing- one of the nicer looking globes that I have seen for awhile. Nice for period decorating as well. There is no fading and yes the oceans are a gold tone color. In the few areas of wear- the under color/base color is silver. Only noticed in the few worn spots. The same type globe sold for $1200 on a website devoted strictly to maps and globes. I would date the globe to approximately 1946. The Philippines are written as the COMMONWEALTH OF THE PHILIPPINES so its post 1945. It is PRE ISRAEL with Trans-Jordan written. India is independent. No notation of Pakistan. I claim no expertise when it comes to the dating of globes but from what I have ... moreread. I would estimate it to date approx 1946 as East/ West Pakistan was created in 1947 and it is definitely pre 48 as Israel does not appear. This example has Gold Coloration for the Oceans. Vtg 1940s Weber Costello Floor Model 14" Terrestrial World Globe AS IS
I have up for sale a wonderful albeit damaged circa early 1940s WEBER COSTELLO Floor Model 14" globe World Globe. This is the first time that I have seen this particular base section- it is made of what appears to be either mahogany or teak. SOLD AS IS- IN NEED OF REPAIR OR FOR PARTS. The piece stands approx 35-1/2" to the top of the meridian and weighs between 9& 10 lbs. I believe that the globe dates somewhere in the early to mid 1940s- The Philippines is still THE COMMONWEALTH OF THE PHILIPPINES. As noted in the Condition Report- the globe itself has damage along the equator- some areas worse than others. In the worst areas- there is also some spots that have been painted and I notice approx 4 small nail heads that must have been used to hold the layers in place. Besides the wear and damages along the equator. There is one ... morespot of paper loss, this is in the USSR where the world SOVIET would be, this is shown in the last pic. Vintage Cram's Universal Terrestrial Globe # 3 12 Inch Early Cold War
Cram Universal Terrestrial 12” Globe#3. Early Cold War Era, mid-century modern. OK! I did some research so YOU don't have to. And have narrowed the globe down to a twelve year period, from 1948 to 1960. I doubt it is early 60s. Here is my reasoning: 1) Germany is still whole(East Germany signed their constitution in 1949; Even allowing for“map lag” it means the globe may not have been made much later than the early 50s) 2) Pakistan is shown. And India is independent, making it post-1947 3) Tanzania is called The Tanganyika Territory. Which makes it pre-1961 4) French West Africa. French Equatorial Africa Date range is 1948-1960. And I find it much closer to 48-51 due to a whole Germany. Cram appears to have changed the stand numbering design of its 12” Universal Terrestrials around 1960 to something less deco than the numbering pictured ... morehere. I like this numbering a lot better. And it looks like a carry-over font from the 20s/30s, but may just be another indicator of a 1940s globe. Condition: AS ALWAYS. This was found in the estate of my Aunt, twenty-five years ago. We've kept it in the condition we found it in at that time. It is a 12" globe, mounted on a iron stand. This is a 9" Hammond's terrestrial globe mounted without meridian or ferules on an elegant art deco style verdigris toned cast iron stand. Hammonds was known for its elegant bases and they quickly became a staple in many collections. The verdigris finished base is exclusive to Hammonds and was offered only during the mid 1920s to early 1930s. The globe is made from a 9 inch diameter orb which is covered by individual. Rare vintage Geographia 10 inch Terrestrial Globe Showing Railways. Steamer Routes in Sea miles, Commonwealth of Nations Red and Heights in English Feet. It is mounted on a cream coloured bakelite stand. Obviously its 10 inches(25.5 cm) across and stands 37 cm high P lease view all enlargeable pictures carefully as they are a fair representation of condition! Started low to generate interest!
