The map is by the great German cartographer Augustus Petermann(1822-1878) Best know for Petermann’s geographische Mitteilungen. The leading geographical journal of the day supplying the world with maps and information on newly explored regions around the world including the Arctic and Africa. His maps were certainly among the most accurate and detailed of the period and led the way to a new school of cartography often referred to as the"Gotha School. ... moreHis maps continued to be used and revised for years after his death in 1878 and his Mitteilungen continued until 2004. After 1865. Petermann was given the responsibility of the cartography for the Stieler Atlas and in coordination with other cartographers in the firm, he guided the production of the atlas until his death overseeing the designs and revisions based on recent discoveries. The publisher and date are shown on the map in the bottom margin and the name of the atlas is in the upper right corner and Petermann's name in the upper left corner. All maps are blank on back side, each country has a description in Spanish, the Atlas is primarily about South America, Mexico and the West Indies but there is also maps of North America, the double page maps are 17 ½” x 14” and the Atlas size is 14 ¼” x 9 ¾” x ½” This Atlas is unique being about South America and having maps of each country in South America, Mexico and the West Indies in 1885, the maps of South America are rare and hard to find complete in an atlas. Condition: The Atlas is complete with all pages and maps. Maps are in very good condition with some light age tanning and spotting. There are no cuts ... moreor tears or repairs that I can see on any the maps, there are two text pages with repairs to the back blank side and one of the repairs to one text page is at the bottom right of the page, you can see both repairs clearly in the pictures, the first couple text pages have creases and some battered edge’s, covers are well attached and very strong and in good working condition, the covers have heavy wear and fading with some missing text to outer covers as you can see also in the pictures. This is a large 1929 Map of South America. Showing disputed territory. It measures 28 X 20 inches. A search of worldcat.org which lists all holdings in the worlds libraries. Museums, historical societies and even a few map dealers shows that no other copy of this 1929 Rand McNally Commercial atlas exists anywhere. We have searched other sites and come up with zero. Paper drives during World War II, took many library and reference works. Add this to the fact that the majority of these atlases were leased by Rand McNally and were returned at the end of the year. This appears to have been the only copy that survived. This map is wax engraved and was issued as part of the Rand McNally Commercial Atlas. To be used by shippers and businesses to get their goods to customers and markets. The Rand McNally Commercial Atlas was updated yearly. This ... moremap is genuine. Not a copy or reprint.
