As this map was being printed, the Kingdom of Great Britain and the Kingdom of Ireland had already amalgamated into a single political entity. England and Scotland were in the midst of the Industrial Revolution. ... moreThough England and Scotland flourished throughout the 19th century, Ireland suffered a series of famines, the worst being the Great Irish Famine, which lasted from 1845– 1849 and killed about a million people. Sidney Hall's New General Atlas was published from 1830 to 1857, the first edition being the most common, with all subsequent editions appearing only rarely. Most of the maps included in the first edition of this atlas were drawn between 1827 and 1828 and are most likely steel plate engravings, making it among the first cartographic work to employ this technique. Each of the maps in this large and impressive atlas feature elegant engraving and an elaborate keyboard style border. Though this is hardly the first map to employ this type of border, it is possibly the earliest to use it on such a large scale. Both the choice to use steel plate engraving and the addition of the attractive keyboard boarder are evolutions of anti-forgery efforts. Copper plates, which were commonly used for printing bank notes in the early 19th century, proved largely unsuitable due to their overall fragility and the ease with which they could be duplicated. As expected for it's age and slight rippling near the center fold. The map may appear slightly curled in the photo, however it will lay flat. This is an amazing detailed map and with some care it can be mounted and framed to enjoy a piece of history. This is the actual original item and not a copy. As it was always in a book the colors have been wonderfully preserved. These will look wonderful framed and hung on your wall and will be sure to give you pleasure for years to come. They are very attractive. Detailed and colorful maps that give us a glance into the past, and have been lots of fun pouring over them for hours by myself, and with friends, looking at the huge differences that have occurred in the last four to five generations. The occasional edge damage such as a tear. Foxing and even the rare stain or crease does appear on a few of these maps that I have for sale, however, any damage that affects the map itself( as opposed to the edge) will be listed above. But overall the condition is good considering the paper is 124 years old! Also. The margin where the page was bound in the book may have staple holes and staining from rust or glue. It is outside the map area and still good for framing. All of my maps are originals. I do not destroy good books. But rescue pages from damaged and ruined atlases. I mail maps rolled up in a tube for protection. Which I have found it ... moreto be the most reliable way for the map to arrive without damage. In 1692 Van der Aa was appointed to be one of the High Commissioners of the Booksellers Guild. During his long and impressive career Van der Aa produced thousands of maps, including a vast 28 volume atlas containing no less than 3,000 maps. Few of Van der Aa's maps were original productions, most being copied from the work of earlier cartographers. Nonetheless, when one of Van der Aa's rare original pieces does appear, his style, with unusual projections, elegant engraving, and precise detail, is instantly recognizable and highly desirable. He also pioneered the cartographic idea of separating border artwork from the map plate itself such that every map in a collection could have a similar elaborate border without actually having to re-engrave the complex plates. This technique was used to great effect by later 18th century publishers like Brion de la Tour. Following Van der Aa's death in 1733, his much admired Nouvel Atlas was reissued by the Dutch firm of Covens& Mortier.
