Size: The map image measures approximately 8 3/4 by 10 1/2 inches on a 9 1/2 by 12" page with a margin all around for framing. Condition: The map is in Very Good to Excellent condition with overall tonal aging and original handcolor with a centerfold as issued. Printed on heavy paper and blank on the reverse. It is basically as seen in the pics. There are a couple of minor light smudges on the edges as seen in the pics, otherwise it is very clean with no distracting defects to mention. c.1654 Rare Timothy Pont- Willem Blaeu Map of MERCIA (South Eastern Scotland)
A beautiful original antique map on a large double sheet entitled"The Merce or Sherriffdome of Berwick" being the south-eastern part of Scotland. The map was published by the famous mapmakers Willem Janszoon and Joan Blaeu in Atlas Novus(1654) based upon an earlier map by Timothy Pont and attributed to him in the decorative cartouche(see scan) Fine condition with minor marginal tears well away from the map. Decorative cartouches and ornate scale. Overall paper size 24 x 21 inches- plate size 20 x 15 inches. Dutch text on the reverse. Below is a description of a copy of the same map taken from a dealer's web page on the internet- not to be confused with the map offered for sale herein(which is not hand-colored) Willem Janzoon Blaeu(1571-1638) Mercia. Vulgo vicecomitatus, Bervicensis' from"Le Théatre du Monde ou ... moreNouvel Atlas” publsihed in Amsterdam, 1654. Copper plate engraving with original hand coloring. Paper size:24"x19 1/2" Condition: Generally good with some minor aging along margins. A map depicting Berwick, the northernmost town in England in the county of Northumberland on the east coast at the mouth of the River Tweed 2.5 miles south of the Scottish border, notice the exquisite cartouche in the upper left corner. Willem Janzoon Blaeu(1571-1638) was the founding father of the single most important cartographic publishing company in the Netherlands for nearly one hundred years. Blaeu’s firm was based in Amsterdam, the center of European cartography at the time. Blaeu was also the hydographic expert for the famous East India Company and the chief cartographer of the United Republic of the Netherlands. Willem, along with his son Johanne, published the first two volumes of"Le Théatre du Monde ou Nouvel Atlas” in 1635 by 1672, however, the atlas had expanded into 12 volumes, the"Geographia Blaviana” depicting in about 600 maps the entire known world with most up to date cartographic exactness of the time. Scotland and the whole of" Edinburghshire. made in the year 1863(while the American Civil War was raging) It is a large map, measuring approximately 19 inches by 13 inches, and it is an outstanding piece for display! This is an extremely detailed map. And it shows literally hundreds of towns and cities, railroads, rivers, lakes, and various other geographical features in tiny detail. There are probably well over 1000 different place-names and topographic features represented in painstaking detail on this map, and the fine touches of coloring add depth and perspective. This great antique map is not only a wonderful piece of historical memorabilia. But it is also an outstanding item for display ... moreas well! This very finely detailed map was produced first as a black-and white engraving. And then afterwards the outlines of geographic units were meticulously hand-colored. This was the usual method of introducing color into engraved images before the advent of printed color. The use of light pastel outline color instead of full color was often preferred on highly detailed maps such as this one. Because when heavy coloring is used it can obscure or overshadow much of the fine detailing. A nice feature of this atlas is that the maps were individually bound along their long edge. Resulting in large maps without a centrefold. This map measures approx 30cm x 40cm excluding margins. Condition is very good. A strong impression that remains clean and bright with attractive printed colour. One or two specks and marks but very minor. The margins are lightly toned with some minor spotting and the right margin is creased and a bit raggedy where originally bound. Verso completely blank and clean; a few foxing spots. Mapmaker: Herman Moll(1654- 1732) was an important 18th century map publisher and ... moreengraver based in London and Holland. Moll's origins are disputed with some suggesting he was born in the Netherlands and others Germany- the Moll name was common in both countries during this period. Most likely Moll was a German from Bremen. As his will, friends, and contemporaries suggest. What is known for certain is that he moved to London in 1678, possibly fleeing the Scanian War, where he worked as an engraver for Moses Pitt and other London map publishers. Around the turn of the century, Moll set up his own shop where he produced a large corpus of work known for its high quality and decorative flair. As a new émigré to England, Moll made himself more English than the English, and through his cartography proved a fierce advocate for his adopted nation. Most of Moll's early maps were issued as loose sheets that would be bound to order, however, he did publish several important atlases late in his career. Moll is said to have made the bold claim that without a doubt"California is an Island" and that he"had in[his] office mariners who have sailed round it.
