Bartholomew Published London: The Times Printing House. 1922. All the maps we are selling come from the same original 1922 atlas. Cartographer J.G. Bartholomew. Cartographer to the King. Size/ Format 22.5" x 17.5" 57.6 cm x 44.8 cm) One fold in the centre. The margins are clean and range form 0.5" to 0.8" 1-2 cm) on all sides. These maps were all'tipped in' to the atlas. Which means they can easily be removed as a single sheet with a fold in the centre. Condition Very good. The colors are bright and fresh. The maps themselves. And the margins, are very clean. Fine. Original, steel-engraved map of Scotland, by the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge(SDUK) Corrected to 1st Novr. 1844. This map is from the first edition of atlas published under the imprimatur of Charles Knight, who purchased the Society's inventory, including the map plates, in 1846. The title-page carries a date of 1848. Knight was undertaking a revision of the maps for the Society even before he took possession of the plates, and as with the initial series, revisions were issued over time rather than all at once. For map sheets that had not been revised, including only to update the publisher's name, Knight drew from the existing inventory. Thus this atlas includes many map sheets with the imprimatur of Baldwin and Cradock, the original publishers. The SDUK began its map publishing project under the leadership ... moreof Captain Francis Beaufort R.N. in 1829, and published the maps in parts, haltingly, over the next 15 years, completing the series in 1844, finally permitting the publication of a whole atlas. Showing the topography, towns, transportation lines both current and past, and other landmarks as they existed in 1888. This map is wax engraved and was issued as part of the Rand McNally Business Atlas. This map is genuine. Not a copy or reprint. It may have few minor handling flaws as to be expected in a map this age and large. This map shows its age as the paper has a light brownish hue in the margins along with a few light age spots. Most often these splits are trivial and easy to overlook visually. Basically, they would not significantly affect the piece adversely. The item is offered as seen. Rare Large Antique 1893 Bacon's Folio Atlas Map of Central SCOTLAND
A fine original 19th century antique map from G.W. Bacon. This listing: Scotland(Central) Provenance Commercial and Library Atlas of the World. Containing one hundred inset maps. Including all the latest discoveries, Extensive letterpress descriptions, Alphabetical index, Populations from the latest censuses, Gazetteer of 2,000 principal towns, Statistical diagrams and tables, etc. Edited by G.W. Bacon. F.R.G.S. Publisher London: G.W. Bacon& Co. Limited, 127 Strand. 1893. The maps for sale here are all at least 115 years old. I removed them from the damaged atlas myself. Size/ Format In millimeters(and inches) Sheet: 540 x 345(21 x 13½) Map: 480 X 300(18¾ x 11¾) These maps were all'tipped in' to the atlas. Meaning that they could be removed as a single intact sheet. There is a fold in the centre of each map. The ... moremaps are lithographs on heavy paper. The colors and still bright and fresh. The margins are generous. Condition The overall condition of the maps is very good/ excellent. There is the occasional spot in the margins of a few of the maps. And the occasional minor tear(always completely confined to the margins) has been professionally repaired. The photos included in the listings are of the actual maps you will receive, Remarks This atlas is relatively scarce. I was only able to find three rather pricey examples available online. A fourth is in the custody of the UK National Archives. Many of the maps that appeared in this atlas were originally published by Bacon in the 1860s as the highly sought after Weekly Dispatch series of maps. These maps are unusually rectangular with a length to width ratio of 1: 1.56. Which was, and is, unusual. The double maps are somewhat longer or'taller' than usual when vertical, and somewhat longer'wider' than usual when horizontal.
