Augustus Mitchell click image to enlarge This beautifully hand coloured original antique map was published by Samuel Augustus Mitchell in the 1870 edition of his large New General Atlas- dated at the foot of the map. These county. State, city& country maps are some of the most ornate and beautifully coloured maps published in the US in the 19th century. For over 50 years, Mitchell his son's and their successors were the most prominent cartographical publishers of maps and atlases in the United States. Samuel Augustus Mitchell was born in Bristol. Connecticut on March 20, 1792. His father emigrated from Scotland in 1773. While little is know about his early schooling, it is know that Mitchell found the quality of early geography text books to be lacking, and determined that he would write and publish better works. This decision led him to relocate to Philadelphia in 1829 or 1830, which was then the center of commercial publishing in America. Mitchells first cartographic work was the re-issue of Anthony Finleys New American Atlas in 1831. A work first issued by Finley in 1826, in response to Henry Schenk Tanners monumental work of the same title, issued in serial format from 1818 to 1822 and as a complete work from 1823 onward. While the map content in Mitchells edition of the New American Atlas are same as Finleys edition, each map has been significantly improved and revised, primarily with the addition of new owns and roads. Thrall's map, which is dated at bottom center, covers the entire state of Connecticut as well as the adjacent Long Island Sound. Connecticut is here divided into eight color coded counties. Inset plans of New Haven, Hartford, and the New England States, rest in the lower right quadrant. The upper right quadrant features a profile of the Farmington Canal. A list of Connecticut governors starting with John Winthrop of 1665, and updated to include John S. Peters of 1831, appears in the upper left quadrant. According to the Connecticut map historian Edmond Thompson, this map was first engraved by Daggert and issued between 1827 and 1829. This is the second edition, published in 1831 with an update to the list of governors and the names of Thrall and Ely added to the imprint. It was later reissued by different publishers in 1836, 1847, 1854 and 1858. This edition and the virtually unknown first edition are by far the most desirable and are found in few collections- a rare opportunity. It is also noteworthy that this map was published in New Haven, Connecticut. Size: Printed area measures 18.5 inches high by 22.5 inches wide. Condition: Good condition. Here for your consideration is an original(not a reproduction) 1876 Geo. F. Cram's Pocket Township and Rail Road Map. The total size of this folded map is approx. 21 3/4" x 16 1/2" The map contains all of Missouri as well as the parts of surrounding states of Kansas. Illinois and Arkansas. There is an approx. 2" tear at one of the folds/ creases at the bottom left corner(where the legend is) The glue that held the map to the cover folder had dried over time and is no longer attached. This piece folds down to approx. 3 1/2" by 5 1/4" to fit into the cover folder that has on the inside, front cover the population of each county(St. Louis County had 352,543) If you have any questions, please email me. From the Ordnance Survey, with the name of every railway station" Mounted on cloth and folded in red cloth covers. With a printed label to the front cover. Condition is good to very good(browning to one panel of the map, pinholes to the corners of the folds, covers rubbed and dusty) Unusually for a map of this nature. The colouring appears to be done by hand. this is perhaps best seen near Newtimber, where a stretch of parkland straddles the main road, and the colouring of the road overlaps the colouring of the parkland. The scale is approximately one inch to one mile. Undated. But I would judge it to be circa 1880. Covers: Brighton. ... moreLewes, Shoreham, Henfield, Ditchling. The map measures 30cm by 43cm. Original publisher's green cloth binding, stampted gilt design and lettering on the cover is in excellent condition. Text is clean. Embellished with 125 highly finished engravings. Includes index. Folded color map, dated 1846, attached to inside back cover has four insets, many engraved vignettes, and bright coloring(outlines of states. One of the insets shows California and Oregon. Map is hand-colored and the colors are VERY BRIGHT. Up for your consideration is a vintage. WW11 issued Brass Compass. Have left it as is when I found it in a I found this compass in the pocket of a US Army Air Force jacket Dated 1942. The compass has worked intermittently since I picked it up. I cannot speak as to what may be the issue. And I am selling it as is. As of right now it is working properly.Everything else is intact and functional-hinges.Crystal glass cover is free of damage The dial and interior are clean,and the exterior has nice color.
