It has an indexed list of streets, public buildings and many other points of interest. The book measures 5.5 x 4 inches with 174 pages.Large foldout map in back measures 29.5 inches wide by 21.5 inches tall, in color. No tears or holes in map. Shows normal wear from age and handling. Paris France double color map plate 1880s Encyclopedia Britannica 9th ed vg
I was given a complete set(minus the index) of the 1880s ninth edition Encyclopedia Britannica. I considered selling the set but half the bindings were falling apart and some articles had inked underlining. So it was not really very nice. So instead I have removed all of the nice color plates and some of the more interesting articles with them. A few were damaged so a few will not be offered. I am happy to combine shipping if you win multiple items, but it will likely take months to list them all. They are all originals. I did my best to cut or tear them as close to spine as possible to make mounting or framing easier, but sometimes little tears formed or they did not pull out properly. I will try to show that in photos. Note also that bifold or two page opening maps often have a jagged looking spine edge because they were attached to a piece ... morethat was"tipped in" glued) in, so that does not mean any harm was done to the center seam of the map, I will point out if the map is damaged. A 40-page booklet from the Tabarin(also called Bal Tabarin) Which was a night club or cabaret or burlesque club, apparently in Paris. The booklet contains many wonderful illustrations and pictures of glamorous people, period advertisements, can-can dancers, beautiful models, etc. It is written in French. It measures about 8-1/2 by 9-1/2 inches. The cover has handling blemishes, and it appears to have been folded vertically at one time, but the inside pages are in very nice condition. A envelope addressed to the same couple. This time aboard the SS Vulcania of the Cosulich Line, dated December 28, 1936, containing a letter from Mrs. Henry E. Who co-founded Encyclopædia Britannica with Colin Macfarquhar. Bell was a colourful Scot. His height was 4 foot 6; he had crooked legs and an enormous nose that he would sometimes augment with a paper-mache version whenever anyone stared at his natural nose. Bell began work as an engraver of crests. Names, etc. on dog collars. Despite his small stature, he deliberately rode the tallest horse available in Edinburgh, dismounting by a ladder to the cheers of onlookers. Bell produced almost all of the copperplate engravings for the 1st-4th editions of the Britannica: 160 for the 1st. 340 for the 2nd, 542 for the 3rd, and 531 for the 4th. For the 1st edition, Bell produced three full pages of anatomically accurate depictions of dissected female pelvises and of foetuses in wombs for the midwifery article; these illustrations shocked King George III who commanded that the pages be ripped from every copy.
