It is approximately 132 years old with original handcoloring and a centerfold as issued. Labeled in Latin and German. It is from the Spruner-Menke Hand-Atlas die Geschichte des Mittelalters und der Neueren Zeit(Gotha: Justus Perthes. 1880) There is also an earlier date in the 1870s printed on the map at the bottom center. A copy of the Atlas title page with date is included for authenticity. The abbreviated title of the Atlas is in the upper right and at the bottom is the publisher's name and date. Size: The map image ... morearea measures approximately 13 by 16 1/2(33x42cm) inches on a 15 by 18 1/2" 38x47cm) page with a margin all around for matting. As seen in the main pic. Paris 1787, Hand Color This map shows the world as it was known at the end of the American Revolution& shows the U.S. as in independent country occupying a narrow strip along the East Coast of North America. The interior of North American is mostly unknown except for the cities of Santa Fe& New Orleans. As this map was conceived during Captain Cook's voyages. Tahiti is shown, but Cook has yet to discover Hawaii. In the Far East most of the steppes are still called Independent Tartary& have yet to be conquered by the Russians. A very interesting map showing the beginning of the modern era. Map measures 14" x 10" is in excellent overall condition. A note on hand coloring: The subject of the age and provenance of hand coloring when dealing with examples of incunabula and early ... moreprinting is a recurrent and confusing one.
