1603 Ortelius Map ANCIENT EGYPT Scholarly, Detailed & Decorative FINE EXAMPLE!
flandriae Aegyptus Antiqua 51.5 cm x 36 cm copperplate engraving. 55 cm x 44 cm sheet size, modern hand colour, Antwerp, engraved 1595, printed 1603 We are pleased to offer this scarce original map(Van der Krogt# 8650H:31B) of Ancient Egypt from the 1603 Latin edition Theatrum Orbis Terrarum of Abraham Ortelius(1527-1598) The first true atlas in the modern sense. This example of"historical cartography" was presented in the Parergon section of the Theatrum. And Ortelius based the content of the map mainly on the writings of Pliny, Strabo, Herodotus and `other classical authors. On the title page of the Parergon section of the atlas. Ortelius notes that these historical maps"are published separately from the Theatrum. Where places are shown as they are in the present day" and that he"includes them as a supplement at ... morethe instigation of friends. No matter the self-effacing introduction, it is evident that Ortelius put far more personal effort into the maps of the Parergon than the"present day" maps of the Theatrum which in most cases were entirely composed by other cartographers. This"sideways" eastern oriented plate is bisected by the Nile and replaces a northern oriented two sheet map of Ancient Egypt that Ortelius first published in 1584. A map of deep scholarship. It is also a wonderfully decorative masterpiece of the engraver's art with this well-preserved example exhibiting hand colour work of the very highest order that will make a superlative presentation if matted and framed. Many of the ornate cartouches used by Ortelius' engravers were in fact taken from a series of ornament prints designed by the brilliant painter. Architect and graphic artist Hans Vredeman de Vries. This handsome title cartouche presents a quotation from Book Eight of Lucan's Civil War(Pharsalia) A land content in its wealth. Needing no aid from Jove but relying upon the Nile" Inset map for Alexandria and environs with a notation explaining that here additional placenames are

Winning bidder will be getting a beautiful and rare vintage print of a Map of the World as it was thought to be in 1590 by Abraham Ortelius. Released by Penn Prints, NY with dimensions 20" x 24" This print is very neat because it shows just how different people saw the world only a few hundred years ago. It is also very beautifully colored, the pictures do not do it justice! This print is in great shape considering its probable age and is on heavy duty paper. There is one corner that had a bug get at it but is very minor. There is also another end which is a little warn, and some minor wrinkling(all of this is shown in the pictures) Any and all flaws in this piece are contained within the edges and could easily be covered by a frame and would look great in any office, den, or library! 1603 Ortelius Map ANCIENT CARTHAGE NORTH AFRICA Scholarly and Flamboyant Classic
Africae Propriae Tabula 48.5 cm x 33.5 cm copperplate engraving. 56 cm x 44 cm sheet size, modern hand colour, Antwerp, engraved 1590, printed 1603 We are pleased to offer this scarce original map(Van der Krogt#8610H:31) of ancient North Africa and the realm of the Carthage from the 1603 Latin Edition of the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum of Abraham Ortelius(1527-1598) The first true atlas in the modern sense. This example of"historical cartography" was presented in the Parergon section of the Theatrum. Where Ortelius notes that his historical maps"are published separately from the Theatrum. Where places are shown as they are in the present day" and that he"includes them as a supplement at the instigation of friends. No matter the self-effacing introduction, it is evident that Ortelius put far more personal effort into the ... moremaps of the Parergon than the"present day" maps of the Theatrum which in most cases were entirely composed by other cartographers. Here Ortelius draws upon the writings of Pliny. Virgil, Herodotus and other classical authors for placenames and locations- in his text commentary on verso Ortelius clearly envisioned this map as an essential aid to the study of Carthage and its history- a city that at its pinnacle he describes"as second only to Rome and which only Alexandria could rival. The beautifully engraved map presents lovely decorative elements. A detailed inset map of Carthage, and is a quintessential example of the unique synthesis of profound historical scholarship and wonderfully decorative cartography that the Parergon maps present. This well-preserved example exhibits sublime hand colour work of the highest order. And will make an elegant presentation if matted and framed. Many of the ornate cartouches used by Ortelius' engravers were in fact taken from a series of ornament prints designed by the brilliant painter. Architect and graphic artist Hans Vredeman de Vries. This large and flamboyant title cartouche presents the"map of Africa Proper, i

1603 Ortelius (Vrients) PARERGON TITLE PAGE Globes, Gods, Classical Figures RARE
Parergon 38 cm x 26 cm copperplate engraving. 44 cm x 29.5 cm sheet size, modern hand colour, Antwerp, 1603 We are pleased to offer this scarce original frontispiece from the 1603 Latin Edition of the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum of Abraham Ortelius(1527-1598) The first true atlas in the modern sense. This wonderfully decorative frontispiece inaugurates the Parergon section of the Theatrum. Which presented maps of historical cartography and the ancient world. Rich in allegorical imagery, Ortelius uses the central frame of the print to describe his intentions for the Parergon: Parergon. Or some maps of Ancient Geography. Dear Reader, Our description of the world is herein supplemented with these maps, which were drawn by me for the benefit of students of both sacred and secular ancient history. I had intended to publish them separately from the ... moreTheatrum, as they did not seem relevant to those maps whose purpose is to show locations as they are in the present day. However, owing to the exhortations of friends I place them here at the conclusion of our work as a superfluous addition or Parergon, so to speak. Farewell and make good use of our endeavours. The engraver of the plate is unknown. But it was introduced by the publisher Jan Baptista Vrients(1552-1612) for this 1603 edition replacing a simple frame title that included Ortelius' text since 1579. Vrients was a master engraver so it is reasonable to assume that he conceived and engraved the plate, and it is certainly in the style of works known to have originated from his burin. As the plate was new for this edition, this example is an unusually strong impression and exhibits hand colour work of the very highest order that will make for an elegant presentation if matted and framed. A River god with trident and a Wind god with rudder and putti wind heads are presented as is an emblematic image of a snake. Orb and books below the Greek excerpt from 1 Corinthians 3:19"The Wisdom of this World is Foolishness with God" To get a sense of the detailed engravi

Additional Information: Abraham Ortelius(Abraham Ortels) 14 April 1527– 28 June 1598) was a Flemish cartographer and geographer. Generally recognized as the creator of the first modern atlas, the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum(Theatre of the World) He is also believed to be the first person to imagine that the continents were joined together before drifting to their present positions. Beginning as a map-engraver, in 1547 he entered the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke as an illuminator of maps. He supplemented his income trading in books, prints, and maps, and his journeys included yearly visits to the Frankfurt book and print fair where he met Gerardus Mercator in 1554. In 1560, however, when travelling with Mercator to Trier, Lorraine, and Poitiers, he seems to have been attracted, largely by Mercator’s influence, towards the career of a scientific geographer. On 20 May 1570. Gilles Coppens de Diest at Antwerp issued Ortelius’ Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, the"first modern atlas" of 53 maps) Three Latin editions of this(besides a Dutch, a French and a German edition) appeared before the end of 1572; twenty-five editions came out before Ortelius' death in 1598; and se

1710 Mortier (After Ortelius) Map ISCHIA The Classic Birds-Eye View by Cartaro
L'Isle d'Ischia dans le Voisinage de Naple 49 cm x 37.5 cm copperplate engraving. 55 cm x 44.5 cm sheet size, contemporary hand colour, Amsterdam, circa 1710 We are pleased to offer this scarce example of the wonderfully decorative map/view of Ischia published by Pierre Mortier(1661-1711) for his Atlas Nouveau which reissued plates published earlier in Paris by Sanson and this case. Jaillot. It seems that virtually every late 16th and 17th century mapmaker published a version of this iconic image including Ortelius, Magini, Coronelli, Blaeu and Jansson and many more. But the model for all is a map issued in 1568 by the Italian master(1540-1620) for a treatise on the therapeutic properties of the thermal baths on Ischia by the physician and scholar(1538-1622) When Ortelius had the map engraved in 1590 for his groundbreaking atlas Theatrum ... moreOrbis Terrarum. The resultant plate was so impressive that all subsequent engravers and publishers followed the Ortelius model with near exact fidelity and here Jaillot was no exception including the southern orientation. As Ortelius wrote, Do not be bewildered, dear reader, that north is not at the top of our map as is usual but at the bottom; we have done so intentionally in order to better show the island's more attractive and important features. The"3D" bird's-eye view and the remarkable level of detail made this the standard map of Ischia for more than a century, and this Mortier imprint stands out as an exceptionally fine impression with excellent hand colour work and is in truly superb condition. A much sought-after imprint, this particularly fine example will make an elegant presentation if matted and framed. On the great off-shore rock we see the with the original site constructed in 474 B.C. and the connecting causeway built by Alfonso of Aragon in the 15th century. Nearby a crater marked"La Cremata" marks the. With stones and rubble nearby which Ortelius described as a"desolate wasteland. Multi-oared dhows ply the waters toward

1603 Ortelius Historical Map ALEXANDER THE GREAT EXPEDITIONS "Indian Campaign"
Alexandri Magni Macedonis Expeditio 46 cm x 36 cm copperplate engraving. 56 cm x 44 cm cm sheet size, modern hand colour, Antwerp, engraved 1595, printed 1624 We are pleased to offer this scarce original map of the expeditions of Alexander the Great from the 1603 Latin edition of the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum of Abraham Ortelius(1527-1598) The first true atlas in the modern sense. This example of"historical cartography" depicting was published in the Parergon section of the Theatrum. And Ortelius presents the map on the trapezoidal Donis projection. Based in part on a 1559 map of Asia by Giacomo Gastaldi. On the title page of the Parergon section of the atlas. Ortelius notes that these historical maps"are published separately from the Theatrum. Where places are shown as they are in the present day" and that he"includes ... morethem as a supplement at the instigation of friends. No matter the self-effacing introduction, it is evident that Ortelius put far more personal effort into the maps of the Parergon than the"present day" maps of the Theatrum which in most cases were entirely composed by other cartographers. With his contribution little more than editor and compiler. Ortelius demonstrates his extensive scholarship and knowledge of the classical world in compiling this wonderfully decorative map which is understandably one of the most sought after of all Theatrum maps. Beautifully engraved and exceptionally well-preserved. This example of the map exhibits hand colour work of the very highest order and will make an elegant presentation if matted and framed. The map features a handsomely framed inset vignette of the Oracle of Jupiter Ammon in the Libyan desert where a ram god was worshipped. The site was visited by Alexander and the oracle supposedly pronounced him the son of Jupiter- an event that precipitated his apparent in his personal divinity: Alexander's fleet under the command of approach a spouting sea monster. Beautifully engraved and presented in a striking"upside-down" southern orientation, the map is based on an compiled by the Swiss historian and geographer(1505-1572) Rightly considered one of the most sought-after maps of Switzerland ever printed. The inverted orientation is reflected in this detail view as Lausanne(Losanna) is shown east of Geneva but to its left: To get a sense of map detail consider that the distance from Zurich to Lucerne as seen in the enlarged photo below measures just 5 cm actual size: Title cartouche credits Tschudi as author of the map and advises that the measurement in longitude of Switzerland of 240.000 paces cited by Julius Caesar"remains true today" Notation by the woefully undersized Lago di Garda(Benacus Lacus) informs the reader that grains of gold are found in the lake. 1603 Ortelius 3 Part Map FLORIDA & AMERICAN SOUTHEAST PERU & ENVIRONS, NE MEXICO
Peruviae. La Florida, Guastecan 46 cm x 33 cm copperplate engraving. 55.5 cm x 44 cm sheet size, modern hand colour, Antwerp, engraved 1584, printed 1603 We are pleased to offer this scarce and beautifully engraved original three-part"New World" map from the 1603 Latin edition of the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum of Abraham Ortelius(1527-1598) The first true atlas in the modern sense. This wonderfully decorative trio of maps engraved on a single plate provides a fascinating snapshot of what is now Peru. Ecuador, Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica and Nicaragua in the map that makes up the left half of the plate while at upper right we find what would become the southeastern United States and below it a map showing the Tamaulipas coast of northeast Mexico. The"Peruviae" map was compiled by Diego Méndez. The official cartographer ... morefor the Viceroy of Peru and Capellán at the in Lima. This map. With two wonderfully decorative ships and elegant calligraphy was the first printed map to bring Europeans a reasonably accurate view of this important region. The"La Florida" map was compiled by the brilliant polymath(1523-1574) who in turn drew upon records of s 1539-1541 expedition in what is now the American southeast and is the earliest printed map of that region. The uncredited"Guastecan" map shows nameless rivers flowing from the interior to the Gulf with many placenames collected during Spanish explorations and slaving expeditions. Ortelius broke new ground with this three part map as each of the regions depicted is based on Spanish sources which was largely unheard of in the 16th century as the Spanish were reluctant to share any cartographic information about their American outposts. A historically important map that will make a cornerstone addition to any collection of early maps related to the Americas. This example exhibits hand colour work of the very highest order and will make an elegant presentation if matted and framed. We begin our survey of the map(s) with t
